Johnny Carson on TCM...Summer 2013

TCM has licensed 50 interviews from the Carson Entertainment Group archives, including chats with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Many of the interviews have not aired since they first premiered.

Re: Johnny Carson on TCM...Summer 2013

Has any network carried any of his old shows since he retired in 1992?

Disappointed the Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin and Robert Mitchum aren't included.

It's a good fit for TCM, since they can slice & dice 'em to fit between movies. Looks enjoyable, but not something I'd expect too many people to specifically tune in for.

You won't see that guest list on Leno or Kimmel.

I like the Conan O' Brien intros for each interview.

No, I guess you won't.

But no Buddy Hackett, no sale!

Actually I own one of the Carson DVD sets and we occasionally pop a disc in. It's easy to forget just how good Johnny really was.

Awesome stuff so far. I couldn't believe they showed that Chevy Chase interview. It was one of the few Carson moments I remember seeing as a kid. Siskel & Ebert come on and trash Three Amigos with Chevy Chase sitting there right next to them the whole time.

The Steve Martin segment was great too as was Doris Day grilling Carson about what kind of porn films he likes to watch.

I'm enjoying these so far. Curious as to why they've been editing Ed McMahon out of the picture. Probably so they don't have to compensate his estate.

Re: Johnny Carson on TCM...Summer 2013

I still contend if NBC put on reruns of Carson's show at 11:30PM every night, he would still beat all the competition.

I just caught Carson at the end of his career (probably around 1985), and to this day, Late night has never been the same since he retired in 1992.

His monologues were always great (and even better when a joke bombed and he actually made it funny by his expression to the crowd KNOWING it bombed!). What people forget is that Carson did great bits, as characters like Carnac and Aunt Blabby would be still funny today. Carson had great timing, and he knew what was funny (unlike many comedians), so he was way ahead of the audience when a bit didn't go so well.

And no one can touch Carson on interviews (Leno is probably the worst, although Letterman was always pretty good most of the time). Carson had that respect in Hollywood (and being friends with many of them too) that he could challenge big movie stars like a Kirk Douglas on his extra-marital affairs and it would be still be funny and wouldn't come off as mean spirited. They loved Johnny, so he could get away with alot of sarchasm in interviews that may come off as awkward from a Leno and Letterman.

Seinfeld said it right about Carson, "Once Johnny retired, they should have retired Late Night altogether because no one could do that show to that level of entertainment anymore."

Re: Carson on TCM

Wish I'd recorded those. I'll have to catch them next week.

I watched a great one a few weeks back with Oliver Reed where he came across as a pompous chauvinist jerk. He kept turning to Shelley Winters to shush her. She walked off then came back a few minutes later and dumped a drink over his head. It was classic.

Conan O'Brien introduces them.

all too brief imo...

I wonder if that was a planned gag.

Did anyone catch the Truman Capote interview? He was tearing through Marlon Brando and Jane Fonda, calling them dumb people but good actors. This was not a gag, he kept repeating this was a serious observation on his part. I doubt any host today would ever allow him back on their air after that segment.

That is the difference between interviews today and Carson's interviews back then. Most of these stars were good friends with Johnny so it was almost like they were hanging out shooting the shit and stuff like that would come out about other actors.

Now everything is so staged and phony, and just another reason why I haven't watched Late Night TV for years.
