The Walking Dead -- "Claimed" -- 2/23/14

Just when Rick thinks he's going to be able to relax, he's faced with multiple immediate threats. Other members of the group deal with their past.

It's been bothering me that no one has walkie talkies on this show. They'd be unbelievably useful especially now with everyone scattered.

Walkie talkies make noise. I can see why they wouldn't be using them on a daily basis.

Didn't Rick and Morgan use them in the pilot.

No. Two-way radios need power to charge. Also, those little cheapo units would work for 200-or-so feet. But trunked systems and tower based systems (they work just like cell phones) would be useless.

Rick did that 1st season. But I think the batteries eventually die due to lack of charging station power right?

Didn't they have iPods at the prison?

It's not like walkie talkies are abundant. I don't even know the last time I saw a toy one around.

Episode was ok, I didn't care for Rick's encounter with people inside the house but liked Abraham and company. Helps that Rosita is easy on the eyes

Re: The Walking Dead -- "Claimed" -- 2/23/14

The most disturbing thing in this ep. was Michonne and the cheese bottle. I haven't read past the collected comic where they introduce Abraham and his group, but I don't think Eugene is all there mentally.

Mindy Kaling is cute IMO, but really seems out of place on Talking Dead. She seems like she's trying too hard at being cute with the way she is sitting on the sofa.

While it most likely won't happen, next week looks like Daryl might actually be in danger not returning. It would make sense at this point, as Abraham can technically fill the bad ass role.

Unless Jesus, kind of literally, becomes Rick's wingman, Darryl isn't going anywhere.

The dead guards at the prisons would likely be carying one each that they could have salvaged.

I was expecting it to be Abraham's group but now it seems all of the groups are headed in the same direction.

Re: The Walking Dead -- "Claimed" -- 2/23/14

How convenient that Eugene should lose control of the gun and render the truck inoperable, thereby forcing the Abraham and Co. to follow Glenn. I know they were fighting when he yelled after spotting the walker, but seriously? I feel like they could've found a better way to accomplish the same thing.

I'm liking Cudlitz as Abraham so far though. I know he hasn't had much screen time yet, but McDermitt's portrayal of Eugene so far doesn't exactly seem to me like someone that Abraham would follow. I haven't read the comics, so this is pure speculation on my part, but he doesn't strike me as some brilliant scientist that is going to save the world. If anything, in the brief bit we saw of him tonight he seems a little dumb. The line "trust me, I'm smarter than you" practically screamed BS. But maybe I'm wrong and he's just a socially awkward genius...

I didn't really like the interactions between Michonne and Carl, but did like the stuff with Rick in the house. The "less is more" approach worked for me in creating tension. Since they went through the trouble of showing Jeff Kober I'm sure we'll end up seeing these guys again at some point in the future.

Jeff Kober FTW!

Really liking the post-prison stuff so far.

They can really play with the audience with regards to Eugene's character, and "convenient" is the exact word I'd use to describe him shooting the truck. The "I'm smarter than you" line is certainly his way of poking at Sgt. Ford and the audience.

I think I see what you're saying, but let me spoiler it just in case...

Spoiler:
Eugene is full of shit and saw an opportunity to delay the group's progress to Washington DC and thus further preserve his lie about being some savior to humanity.

If that's the case...

Spoiler:
Maybe he is smarter than the rest, but just in a scheming sort of way as opposed to a scientific sort of way. Well done to the writers if that's the case and I retract my previous criticism.

You got it! But like I said, the writers can play with us comic readers because that is what we expect to happen.

That's pretty cool then actually. Would you say the comic is worth reading? I go back and forth on my opinion of the quality of the show...

Here's the thing with the comic:

The governor stuff lasts a bit but after that the story speeds up quickly. If you start reading again you are going to get a lot of events thrown at you in quick succession. I'm sure the show will stretch those things out for years but the surprise factor goes out the window. I kinda feel like I'm waiting for certain events to happen now.

LOL, nice opening
Sgt. Ford bashes in a bunch of zombie skulls and the only red on him is his hair

Re: The Walking Dead -- "Claimed" -- 2/23/14

Can someone give me a spoilerized answer to whether or not Eugene (and the "I know what caused this" plot) is in the comic?

EDIT: I decided to research it myself, and
Spoiler:
Yes, Eugene exists, and his claim is full of shit.

First, no one with a mullet can ever be considered smart. Secondly, Rick is quickly becoming a useless character.

Why do I get the feeling that Carl and Michonne will be the only two standing when the show ends?

First, there should be plenty of AA batteries left in the world for them to scrounge, but beyond that there are plenty of ways to charge batteries after the apocalypse. Solar chargers have been commonplace for years, and they certainly would have come across a few in any number of stores they've scavenged.

And their lack of scrounging anything really useful, or having any sort of contingency plans, is really starting to bug me. What did they do while they were sitting around all day? How about discussing what to do if the Governor or anyone else showed up at their front gate?

Back to the radio situation, they could find walkie talkies in any discount store or truck stop, or from Rick's police station, or the military units they've found abandoned. And they should have a range of a few miles. The old toy ones I had were good for a couple miles, and those were just toys.

It's

the cannibals.

Okay... maybe not... but it would be an awesome way to lead victims into Cannibaltown.
