I'd say the first, like, by far.

People usually say seasons 1 and 2, but I love 3 the best followed by 5.

Re: Six Feet Under

My Dad passed away three weeks ago from neck cancer. I remembered watching Season One years ago but never getting into the other seasons. Now I went back to S1 on tuesday and marathoned the whole season in two days. The show is oddly therapeutic in dealing with his passing.

So started S2 tonight and found a big plot hole in EP.1
Spoiler:
If David knew the X was in the Asprin bottle, why did he leave it there the whole time? One would think to remove the bottle and keep it in his room where no one else but him could get access.

Re: Six Feet Under

I thought 3 was the worst. I like Lilli Taylor, but the character of Lisa is so humorless and so needy in a passive aggressive sense. Parts of that season were just painful to watch.

There was a real sense of mystery about season 1. Season 2 showed Brenda's descent culminating in the epic fight between her and Nate. Season 5 had some wonderful moments, and the last few minutes of the finale is some of the best TV ever!

Maybe he forgot about it.

Not only is 3 my least favorite season, it's tied with 4 as my least favorite, so having them at polar ends is really weird to me.

I don't think there was a truly bad season of the show though to be honest. I remember always hearing three and four weren't very good before I watched them but really didn't have a problem with either.

This.

Or maybe because I read so much about those seasons, I was already expecting something really bad. And I marathoned the show, so that's always a different experience.

I am not surprised at all because you are not the only one to have that thought, however, my thoughts on this season are exactly that of the dvd talk review of the dvd here on dvdtalk. I won't go into too much detail but the final paragraph of the content section sums up my feelings nicely:

For all of the complaints some viewers had when this third season originally aired, taken as a whole and in context, it elevates an already fantastic program to even greater heights. It's bold and daring and takes numerous risks with its characters and its story (nearly all of which I've specifically avoided mentioning in this review), and the journey is all the more worthwhile because of it. Also, while focusing even more on the interrelationships of the primary characters than previous seasons, each episode still carries a thematic message that stands strong on its own. Refusing to rest on their laurels, Alan Ball, Alan Poul, and everyone involved with this season have crafted an exceptional season of television that is an absolute must for any fan of the series.

I remember reading that Alan Poul said that the third season was all about family and, yes, he was exactly right. The initial premise of the show takes a back seat and we are thrown into this group's personal (not professional) turmoil (and, yes, a select few of their riches).

I absolutely loved the abruptness of the change in tone and applaud any show for being ballsy enough to do it.

The thirteen episodes flow very well and while the acting was all around great during the entire show, the cast was on a whole other level this season. The finale, I'm Sorry, I'm Lost, is also my favorite episode from the show.

Also not that it really matters in the long run, but I remember when Emmy time rolled around Entertainment Weekly (who was never really a super fan of the show) thought this season deserved to win Best Drama Series.

It's only because I think 3 is flawless and 1, 2 and 5 are near perfect. See below why I think four is at the bottom of my list while still being pretty great averaged out.

It's my favorite show but if I were forced to come up with a negative it would be anything between Grinding the Corn and Bomb Shelter in season four. I think those episodes were at best average and at worst forgettable (outside of what the titles refer to - I could not tell you exactly what happens in either of the three episodes). The rest of the season, however, is aces.

Exactly. Then when it was brought up he remembered he left it in there.

Re: Six Feet Under

I did watch 6FU as it aired, which I think will hamper that 3rd season somewhat. Marathoning it over the course of a week or two, rather than 13 might work in it's favor.

I watched it live as well, but I can understand where you come from. It's not exactly fast paced television the third season.

Re: Six Feet Under

Those first two episodes in S2 were bad. I finally watched Ep. 3 and damn it really picks up!
