Most overrrated show currently on TV?

Someone asked about making this thread in the Underrated shows thread, so I thought I would oblige.

Please, let's not make this thread about shows I hate, shows I have only seen 1 or 2 episodes and think they suck.

Just realized that I probably should have put The Big Bang Theory in the poll. It's currently the most watched 30 minute comedy on TV right now.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

I watch both Girls and Modern Family, but I will have to go with them.

Regarding Girls:

:thmbsdwn: No Allison Williams nudity

 Seeing Lena Dunham's fat ass walking around in a thong and her nasty ass boobs & tattoos.

The Walking Dead. Didn't even read through the full list since I knew I'd be checking that one.

Edited to add that I am an avid viewer. Just wish it took more than gore and flesh-eating zombies to garner high ratings these days.

That would be hard to do.

I watch the TBBT and don't think it's overrated. :)

From the list, I think all of those show are rate accordingly. I mean, some are popular, some are loved by the critics, some by only some people, etc.

Although much of the luster is lost from Modern Family, I have to go with 2 1/2 Men or 2 Broke Girls. Both pull in decent numbers and are touted as "hits" but I can't stand 5 minutes of either one of them.

If you ask about underrated shows I'll go with The Middle and Back In The Game. Find them both entertaining week to week and while BITG has been cancelled, The Middle gets no love.

In what universe could Agents of SHIELD be overrated?

Most TV pundits -- even the ones who like it -- agree that it needs a major overhaul.

Some of those are pure shit but as far as being overrated Mad Men gets my vote.

:johnwoo: Die! Mad Men is fucking brilliant. Some folks don't appreciate what a slow burn it is, but man I love that show.

Homeland went in the shitter this year, but I don't think it's overrated because this year it's probably been the most critically savaged and dismissed formerly critically acclaimed show of all time

I voted for The Newsroom, even though it's not exactly overrated, because it's the closest thing I could think of to The West Wing that inexplicably won a bunch of Best Drama Emmys

Paff 12-18-13 03:37 PM

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

My first inclination was The Following, as I slogged through half a dozen or so episodes then got so annoyed with the convoluted narrative that I just quit. But that doesn't mean it's overrated, just means it sucks. Not the same thing.

Then I thought Masters of Sex, which I'm watching and enjoying, and yet I don't seem to be as wowed by it as a lot of you are (I regularly see you calling it the best show on television, which I strongly disagree with)

So I'm going with one of my favorite shows, actually. The Walking Dead. I love it, watch every minute of it. But it's hardly groundbreaking stuff. I just like good zombie movies, and this is like a regular one every week. There's far better stuff on the tube in terms of acting, storylines, etc. In terms of quality, TWD is nowhere near the amount of ratings it's getting.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

I stopped watching the Walking Dead about 4 episodes ago because I just didn't know why I kept watching. I hear friends talk about how great it is, but man, I gave that show every chance in the world, and I don't see it. It just slogs through plot points. It's also a show that pretends to takes itself seriously and be realistic, but then ignores logic whenever it is plot convenient. That's infuriating to me.

And please don't say "how does a show about zombies claim to be realistic?" You know what I mean.

Two and a Half Men barely registers anymore in terms of ratings. The most recent episode pulled a 1.9 rating in the demo, it would be canceled if they... I actually don't know why it hasn't been yet at this point. Last season it averaged about a 3.6 rating in the demo. But I do agree, I've seen it in the past and it has always been bad.

It's a family show, not too far removed from what used to be on TGIF back in the 90s, just "reality" based. Underserved demo.

IMO, The Big Bang Theory.

It's my opinion as well. Hell even the characters on the show comment on her nasty boobs.
I respect the show and her work on it, but the nudity is a big "fuck you" to those critical of her body and willingness to show it. I get where she's coming from, but I hope it stops. Seriously.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

I'd have to go with Modern Family. The show can still occasionally(very occasionally) be funny, but the show is a shell of it's former self with most of the cast bordering on annoying now. Still have no idea how it won the Emmy for best comedy again last year.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

The Walking Dead easily. The first season was decent but I haven't really cared much for it since then. The Newsroom is a show that kind of disappoints me too. It feels like it should be a lot better than it is but it's just sort of okay.

Probably more under over-hyped I guess. I threw it in for the hell of it.

Not surprised at the responses for The Walking Dead.

I agree. It's more of her saying that she's the creator, head writer, executive producer and can do whatever she wants including flaunting her naked body whether the fans who watch it like it or not.

I too respect her work on it and it can be funny at times, but stuff like that irks me and makes me think she's a little full of herself. Especially after winning the awards.

Also at this point I'd almost say that The Simpsons is underrated personally. The show has a lot of haters now days but in my opinion the show has actually gotten pretty good again since around season twenty or so to present.

Agreed with everything you said right up to "but I hope it stops..." I like what she and the show have to say, but I don't have a problem with the nudity.

I think she'd been doing this since the earliest episodes before the awards came in

Wow, I'm not sure. I loved Season 1 and Season 2. I watched them on Blu and was surprised to find that there was a big backlash at the second half of S2 last year. I loved the twists they threw in the first half of S2 and just rolled with the second half. Plus I think there's a fundamental difference in the experience of watching a show episode by episode on Blu Ray vs watching weekly as it unfurls and absorbing all the intricacies (as well as reading a lot of weekly blogs and discussion here on a week-to-week basis).
What I'm saying is it might feel different if you watched it in a vacuum at home, but I can't really imagine anyone coming out the other end of Season 3 thinking they watched a show worthy of their time, let alone the previous two seasons of Homeland. It was a real aimless, implausible mess and a huge disappointment to me.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

I went other -- Big Bang Theory.

I've seen enough episodes to think that its a decent show. If I catch a syndicated episode, I'll half watch it and enjoy it. But I can say the same for Two and a Half Men.

But I don't get the award nominations and the overly high praise. IMO, Its Always Sunny and Parks and Rec are leaps and bounds better than TBBT but don't get half the award praise. I just don't get it.

This goes for most reality shows though ... and I voted them all as overrated ten years ago.

Of course, my full hatred of them, I know someone that is going to be on a reality show next month. You can bet I'll be posting in that thread when it pops up. Not exactly thrilled with the person.

 Watching an episode right now when I clicked the thread. I assumed this would be everyone's chance to shit on the show.

Yeah, I was surprised not to see TBBT there, as commercially successful and popular as it is, a lot of people loathe it and would vote for it in a heartbeat.

I'm inclined to agree with this. TBBT isn't a bad show but it's vastly overrated. It can't hold a candle to Community, Parks & Rec, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, etc.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

I watch quite a few shows and have only watch three on this list and the first season of another.

Normally I would say Game Of Thrones because I find it to be a hateful, cruel, lifeless, depressing show. However that could just be my taste in shows and not a reflection of the acting, and other aspects of the show.

I went with Glee since it's the only show listed that I truly dislike.

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

Went with Walking Dead because of its huge popularity in spite of being a pretty poor, horribly written and trite show. I watch because I keep hoping that they will approach the material more intelligently, but logic or reason does not seem to matter to the show, they just want to use plot as a convenience to set up various conflicts and events whether they make any sense whatsoever.

PhantomStranger 12-19-13 12:33 AM

Re: Most overrrated show currently on TV?

Some of these shows were never highly rated in the first place.

It has to be The Walking Dead given its insane ratings. Take away the zombies and you are left with a wildly inconsistent series. The constant zombie action is keeping audiences interested but the writing is uneven and its acting has some problems. Andrew Lincoln is in over his head as the lead character. There have been stretches of good episodes but the plotting is suspect and seems driven by AMC's budgetary problems.

In the comedy category, it has to be The Big Bang Theory. Another wildly popular show that has been coasting off its reputation for at least three seasons. What started out as a consistently funny, traditional sitcom has evolved into a tired kludge of characters.

I just picked it as overrated. Perhaps not a fair assessment, as I just watched my first new episode in a couple of years last Sunday. I thought it was terrible. I really loved this show, previously, but this was piss poor. I also couldn't believe the amount of commercials. At one point, there was about 3 1/2 minutes of show between commercial breaks. Kind of reminded me why I rarely watch network TV without PVRing it or torrenting it.

Girls by a mile. And it's not Dunham's boobs I have a problem with. It's the rest of the show.

I think Modern Family is receiving it's fair share of negativity now. People are starting to tire of it, I think. Good.

I think House of Cards is overrated in terms of reviews, awards attention and such. I thought it was a serious bore.
