I don't think the show found a wider audience until somewhere around the end of season four/start of season five. The show only seemed to blow up in popularity the last two seasons (and really more the final season if you ask me).

The show grew in small increments season to season, and then blew up in the second half of Season 5.

All I know is it seems like it went from a show with a rabid cult following online but a lot of casual audience members didn't seem to know much about it to huge in it's final season.

First half of season 3 nearly lost me. After rewatching season 3 a couple months ago I figured out why too. Every damn character is mopey about something. But once you hit "One Minute" the show is off and running.

When I ranted and raved over how unbelievably great BB is to people I know, others wanted to "join in on the hype" (especially over the last 8 episodes when it became a pop culture phenomena) and I got ridiculed for over-hyping a "rather boring" show.

It had me from the get-go, and although I realize not all people view every TV series the same, if you want some of the best damn television ever written then the middle of Season 3 through the series finale is what you want to see.

You gotta see the beginning to get there, and I think you'll have an appreciation for the first/second seasons after you've seen the show from start to finish.

Yeah, I was always worried the show was going to get canned before it finished. Despite the numbers seeming like they're stagnant, the season averages went up constantly. The show really blew up in Pt 2 of Season 5.

Season 1 Episode 1: 1.4m Viewers
Season 1 Finale: 1.5m viewers

Season 2 Episode 1: 1.66m Viewers
Season 2 Finale: ? viewers

It's one of the best shows ever. I love it all, it does ramp up mid season 3 but that is largely because of what came before it. I think it also jumps up a notch after he becomes Heisenberg.

Really? Season three was actually where I thought the show really became the best thing on television. The first two seasons were damn good and had me wanting more and more but I just really thought that season three is where it hit it's stride. The first half it a bit more slow burning and it snowballs at the end but the season overall is strong to me.

I am staying away from this thread in case people post spoilers but just wanted to say i am over half way through season 3 and it has improved A LOT

less skyler, less walt jnr and more stuff happening

Just finished the episode 'One minute' and that has cemented that i will stick with the show to the end Bloody awesome episode of TV

Like I said, the first half is just a downer. Every character is moping around over something.

Walt: my wife left me because I'm a meth cook
Skylar: poor me, my husband is a drug dealer/cook
Jessie: boohoo my junkie girlfriend OD'd
Hank: down in the dumps over the Mexico incident
Marie: always down about Hank

Now none of these character traits or turns are bad on their own, but to have them all fall in the same half season?

Meh I guess I disagree. The third season was where I really thought the show started to kick in to gear honestly.

By the time the third season rolled around the series was starting to show more of how Walt's decisions had impact on not only himself but those around him. The show had started putting things in place a bit to start falling apart in the second season but by the third things were really starting to crumble. I think most things that happened were all pretty natural progressions to what had happened up to that point. Walt and Skyler's relationship had to start falling apart by the time the third season rolled around if you ask me otherwise Skyler would have just looked stupid. Jesse's reaction to Jane's death was also natural to showing the growth of the character and realizing that while he's made his share of bad choices he does have a conscious things unlike Walt. He felt responsible for getting Jane back into drugs and her overdosing (even though Walt was just as bad or worse for not saving her while he watched her die).

For me the show really took off with the crossover episode with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Seeing Carlton having fallen to taking meth was a powerful moment.

Not that it matters at this point, but the answer to both of your questions is "yes". This show was impressive in that it got better and better as the seasons went on. Skylar is annoying, although like someone else said, you can at least sympathize with her plight.

I can honestly say there is not a single episode that I found on any level even slightly boring. To each his own I guess, look at the ratings for the Walking Dead - not that is a boring, crappy show.
