The TV story takes place around a thousand years after a nuclear/chemical/biological war. The gnomes, trolls, and dwarves are human mutants. The demons and elves, in contrast, are ancient creatures. The elves have been in hiding during the era of human dominance.

Not essential? He's one of the best characters in the story! Okay, I can understand if they aren't going to have a huge battle like in the book, because they barely even touched upon the Border Legion, and I get the demo they're shooting for and it's obviously not me but I'd still like to see them be a little more faithful to the source material.

Haven't you heard, Elf ears are delicious!

Yep. It's on MTV, what else would be perfectly preserved than a high-school prom?rotfl

10,000 years in the future we'll be dancing with elves at raves and watching Star Trek.

As I was watching that scene, I could only imagine the reaction it would get here.

Yeah, I'm really not liking the silliness of this and the changes made.
Really does seem like it's been like maybe 100 years, but definitely not 10,000+ years.

I'll probably keep watching anyhow this season, but I really don't think I'd tune in for another season if it got renewed.

I check into this thread every once in a while just to see what I'm missing, since I dropped the show after the pilot. Apparently the show has gone off the rails. Too bad, it looked promising.

The show is Shannara in name only now- it has little, if nothing to do with Elfstones.

The rave and the sexual titillation aside, don't get me started on the gunfight. There are no guns in Shannara (albeit they used "black powder" much later on in the series). Besides, handguns just wouldn't exist that far in the post-apocalyptic future of Shannara- and where did they get the bullets? The whole point of Shannara is that "man's science" is lost.

That's the first time I've ever seen San Francisco's transbay tube used in a storyline.

I'm thinking about watching a few episodes when it goes into reruns just to check it out. I'm a sucker for fantasy stuff, and Gough and Millar's writing may be decidedly questionable, but they tend to command impressive production values. Or Hulu or someone may get it.

It was a fine, if lightweight, teen fantasy adventure show for about four or five episodes. The last couple of episodes are starting to devolve into parody material.

Well, the new villain means a second season wouldn't have to follow any of the books' storyline.

I'm thinking all the Shannara fans have abandoned the show at this point and the only viewers they might have left are tween girls.

Was that the season finale? I guess they wrapped up everything and left a couple of logical openings for next season.

A show like this likely required a two-season commitment from MTV, no matter the ratings.

After seeing how MTV handled Teen Wolf, The Shannara Chronicles turned out pretty much like I expected. Most of the book's fans have likely checked out by now, but MTV got their fantasy teen romance adventure show.

I didn't mind this season but I only have a passing familiarity with the books.

Well I managed to make it through this season somehow, but it just got really goofy in the second half of the season. I don't see myself returning to the show for any future seasons. Hopefully MTV doesn't bother to renew this and learns their lesson, but I doubt that happens ever.

The quality slipped after a few episodes. I think the show blew its budget on those first couple of episodes and had to get creative for the finish.

A high-fantasy kind of show is probably a mother on a cable TV budget. Apparently GOT over on HBO is one of the most expensive television shows ever produced. Popular as this kind of thing is with a certain audience, I just don't think this is a genre that's doable on a small budget.

Which is why you never see fantasy-driven material on network television. Once Upon a Time tries its best but often looks terrible.

I burned through the last four episodes this morning. I appreciate that they ended with a big battle, and along the way had an attractive woman having sex, but overall it was just meh. I probably won't be back for season 2. I read Elfstones when it was new so I don't consider myself a book reader.

It was kind of cool when they came across 21st-century ruins, but the guns, the newspapers, the Star Trek--yikes, that was dumb. And the rave was just rotfl

It's surprising for sure. Oh well. Maybe they'll figure out a way to liven it up more.

Not surprising. The sets are already built, a lot of money would be flushed down the drain if they didn't air a second season. Pretty much every television show made these days outside network television is started with the financial premise it will get two guaranteed seasons. "Renewals" for a second season of this kind of cable fare is advertising theater.
