I liked the ROXXON sign at the gas station in the opening scene.

This show keeps getting better and better.

Skye is still an imp, but she's loosening up a bit.

The effects in this ep were great. Poor Tobias.

Ratings were up with no NCIS on last night. 9.3m viewers and 2.5.

They seem to be molding the Colson-Skye relationship after the Giles-Buffy dynamic. This show really hurt itself in its first few episodes, which were noticeably poorer in execution.

I agree and I like it, too. Greg Clark is so damn likable in this role.

Fixed.

Did you know that he's married to Jennifer Grey (since 2001).

No one puts Coulson in a corner.

I'm checking in here not because I watched but because I'm glad to hear this is getting better. I inadvertently missed two in a row and haven't watched since. I want the show to succeed and will try hopping back on when I can.

The show will go from good to great when they stop having it be a procedural show to the full blown season arcs that Whedon is known for.

Next week's episode looks like a step in the right direction in regards to that.

It sounds like Marissa and Jeb are the real showrunners, I just can't imagine Joss has much time to work on the show, though given how many of his fingerprints are on it, he clearly must've been involved in the conception of it.

I always like the story format of building up to something big while keeping many episodes stand alone at the same time with ones here and there going to the bigger story. Basically the way Buffy ran. I don't want a too be continued each week, too serialized if they go that way.

I think they went the procedural approach because heavily serialized shows have absolutely no replay or re-run value and are harder to sell to overseas networks. Most serialized shows don't get repeated during the TV season and I noticed that ABC is scheduling a few re-airs of Agents of Shield during the Holiday hiatus.

Did we watch the same show?

The seasons of Buffy that are considered to be the best (2, 3, and 5) had far more serialization and less stand-alone episodes. In fact, the seasons that had more stand-alone episodes are considered the worst (1 and 4). While some of Buffy's best episodes are stand alone (ex: The Body, Hush, and Once More, With Feeling), some of them came from the show's worst seasons.

On the flipside, I feel Angel benefited during its last season to the procedural change. However, it was a fresh change of pace from the abortion that was its fourth season with the Angelius/Connor storyline.

I really wish we could've seen what Whedon would've been able to accomplish with season arcs for Firefly. We got a hint of it, but the show was cancelled before anything could be properly developed.

I have, will and do watch very serialized shows yet it's not my favorite format for that reason. You can't really just rewatch an episode again because it's basically twenty hour movie.

I'm likely thinking of whatever event is going on within any given episode is completed by the end even if it's part of a bigger puzzle. Of course once they got closer to the end it really was too be continued. It never felt over serialized like a show like twenty four, not a huge fan of that format.
