Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) - Series Discussion Thread

Said to start Sundays in 2014.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”
I thought he was great filling in on TDS and was hoping he'd get his own show out of it. Looking forward to seeing what he does with it.

I was hoping that he would take over TDS once Jon eventually departs. I'm really going to miss him on TDS.

Good for him. I actually thought he was a fantastic replacement host for Stewart over the summer. Better than Stewart, actually, because he didn't do any of Stewart's annoying mugging for the camera.

If I was Bill Maher Id be a little concerned. Not only was his recent special on Yahoo and not HBO they did can Dennis Miller shortly before hiring Maher.

That was really touching. I loved his reaction when he found out they weren't going to do the bit.

Definitely will watch the new show, haven't seen his send off yet, but I love me some John.
Also he's a huge Liverpool fan, so I love him for that

Re: John Oliver goes to HBO for topical weekly talk show
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will premiere on April 27, HBO announced today. The new weekly satire show from the former Daily Show With Jon Stewart correspondent and stand-in host will air at 11PM. Last Week Tonight will be produced for HBO by Avalon Television, with Oliver, Tim Carvell, James Taylor and Jon Thoday serving as EPs, and Liz Stanton producing. HBO first announced the move over from Comedy Central by John Oliver on November 14 last year. The British comedian took over the desk on The Daily Show last summer as Stewart was away directing his first feature film. Oliver took his final Daily Show bow on December 19 to start work on his own show, Not that Oliver will be straying far from the tested and true – Last Week Tonight will, like The Daily Show, be taking a satirical look at news, politics and current events.

This premiered tonight. and I loved it.
It kind of feels like a pay cable Daily Show (though the swearing was never excessive). I'm not sure if this airs live or on tape, but he was able to talk about the Clippers owner. Keep an eye out for it on replays through the week. Airs sunday nights at 11.
I read he declined the Letterman slot due to HBO giving him complete creative freedom & he won't have to have celebrities on to promote their movies if he doesn't want them.

Thought you meant he turned down Letterman's show on CBS at first.

Definitely felt like a Daily Show clone (which isn't a bad thing). It will be fun to see where he takes this once he makes it his own.
Did anyone else feel like he was kind of rushing? Hard to put my finger on it. He covered a lot of topics it seemed.

I liked it a lot...surprised it wasn't live, since that's the impression the promos gave, but they must put it together sometime on Sunday.

This was just meh. I like Oliver, but the format is all too familiar. May as well have called it The Weekly Show.

1.1 million viewers for its premiere. Which is an increase over what Veep does at 10:30, HBO is probably very happy

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, guys - I laughed more in 30 minutes than I have all season of REAL TIME.
I wouldn't be surprised if they expand this show to an hour eventually and add more segments.

I thought it was hilarious as well. Mainly because of Oliver's reactions to things. He even almost cracked up himself several times.
