Modern Family -- 1 Hour Premiere -- "Suddenly, Last Summer/First Days" -- 9/25/13

Synopsis:

ABC's acclaimed hit comedy, "Modern Family," returns for its fifth season with a special one-hour event, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. In the first half of the hour -- "Suddenly, Last Summer" -- the family is in the throes of summer activities: Phil and Claire are trying to orchestrate a kid-free week by coordinating Luke's camp with Haley's beach trip and Alex's volunteering excursion; Jay and Gloria are getting Manny ready for his first solo trip back to Colombia; and Mitch and Cam make it a summer to remember. In the second half-hour - "First Days" -- Luke and Manny have their first day at high school, which proves to be harder for Phil and Gloria than for the boys. Elsewhere, Claire makes her big return to the workforce at Jay's closet company and is a little rusty on her first day, and Cam starts a new substituting gig at the high school, leaving Mitch to try to juggle Lily's first day of pre-school and a very important meeting at work.

24 episode 5th season

Show lost a little steam last year, but still one of my favorite 30 minute comedies.

More like a LOT of steam. Last year was so awful. Going to give it a shot this next few episodes, but if it still sucks, I'm down. Lots more interesting shows on TV right now.

This reminds me that I still need to watch the last two episodes of the previous season.

As usual Phil is carrying the show. Luke really grew over the summer. that little kid charm is gone.

Pretty good episodes, but this show has definitely lost something.

I'm worried about that, too. Luke was comedy gold. He was barely in these eps.

I thought it was another strong start. If it follows the pattern of the last two seasons, it will begin strong, nose dive in February, then a respectable finish.

Everyone that says last year was terrible needs a refresher. If you read the threads for the first six or seven episodes, there was pretty much a consensus that the show was as good if not better than ever.

She looks like an average young woman. Nothing wrong with that. However, that shirt about Ashton, well, I know it's a play on him going after older women probably, but isn't she jail bait anyways? She's too young for just about anyone.

Yeah. According to Wikipedia she's currently 15. Unless we're back to the Medieval method of marrying off girls at 14, she's definitely too young for anyone.

In Utah we're the perfect marrying age for her to be my ninth wife; 54/15. If she were a year younger that would be better but I don't mind them with a little wisdom.

show has lost its fastball, didnt even finish the full hour, will get back to the 2nd half hour later this week.

I dont know, its just seems like it is trying way to hard for setup laughs. And the Gloria misspeak Spanglish bits are getting very old...

Jay: "Oh, honey, no one ever leaves home and doesn't come back."

Lily: "I did."

I thought the first episode was better than the second. I agree the show is not as sharp as it used to be, but it's still pretty enjoyable.

Still laughed, but will agree that Gloria not being able to pronounce things correctly is getting old. Anyone else notice how she pressed Manny against her chest? Rico Rodriguez must love the hell out of his job. Speaking of which, how come Luke now has a man's voice but Manny doesn't? I would say it's about time.

I was DVR'ing it so I gave up too. May try again before I erase it, but for me, Cam, Mitch and Lilly were always the weak link and they only get worse as time goes on.

I liked the first episode and thought it was pretty entertaining. Seriously, if Phil ever leaves this show it's so screwed. He's the one who gets laughs in almost every scene.

The second episode I thought was much less funny though I did like seeing Barkley's return.

Re: Modern Family -- 1 Hour Premiere -- "Suddenly, Last Summer/First Days" -- 9/25/13

I just watched these first two episodes of the season. As soon as I saw Luke on screen in the first episode I did a double take and actually went online to look to see if they had got a new actor to play the part. I can't believe how different he looks and sounds in such a short period of time. It's like a totally different person now. The cute little boy naivety is just gone, vanished. Manny's voice has changed a good but, but Luke, wow, just crazy.

Based on all the interviews I have seen, my guess is that Rico will play for the other team. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

What the hell does a closet company do and how did it make Jay so rich?
