Re: 2013 - 14 TV Season Thread (Ratings, Renewals, Cancellations, Comments, etc;)
Can someone explain something for me? Because I reaaaaaalllllly don't get this one:
Setting my DVR up for the furthest possible date the other day, CBS in two weeks... A one hour, 8pm special episode.... of Judge Judy?!?
Now I'll admit, one of my few guilty pleasures is Judge Judy. Can't get enough, really - and I watch exceedingly little television anymore, absolutely zero "fake/scripted court shows", zip in reality trash or other daytime fare. So I'm actually, in some ways, stoked - I'm assuming whatever 'new' cases they are airing on the special were selected for primetime for a reason, so I'm expecting something good.
But wtf? Two days before sweeps ends? Where's NCIS' finale, instead? Tell me CBS didn't really just completely throw in the towel for the Voice's sake. And... Judge Judy? This is unprecedented - at any point in the past 15 years, at any time of the year. I've never seen anything like this move. CBS did, when Bob Barker was around, occasionally record special Million Dollar Price Is Right primetime specials. But A. That's a gameshow. B. It's a CBS controlled property, airing on CBS affiliates across the land. C. They haven't had one of them in years - maybe, *maybe* there was one since Carey took over.
The timing is odd, May Sweeps. The type of show is almost unprecedented - I remember FOX maybe aired a couple afternoon kids shows in primetime rarely in the mid-90s (I'm recalling one night with a... Friday maybe? Mighty Morphing Power Rangers special). Game shows from daytime, rarely. This? Never. It's crazy - apparently new cases, a 1993 60 Minutes Interview that launched her to Hollywood, retrospective... it's like a mish-mash of Judge Judy anarchy.
But the biggest thing - I live in the DC market. Judy's syndicated. Here, it airs on our Fox O&O network. However much CBS earns from being the syndicating studio, the fact remains that in a little under two weeks CBS is going to be airing a one hour promo touting my local Fox affiliate.
So does anyone know exactly what the background is on them coming up with and scheduling this? And am I mistaken, have there been specials on any network that are comparable to this? At least in the past 20 years?
CBS is *really* starting to go off into left field this season. It's hearkening back to the mid-90s and the geriatric network days, bizarre programming in bizarre spots targeting unusual demos. I've never understood the practice of conceding defeat, whether when American Idol was huge for its finale or now for the Voice. And I thought the Voice had slipped this year a bit, although I don't watch or keep track of it, but I don't know why CBS shows weakness by moving up NCIS' finale and putting this on instead.
It's almost exactly like the colorized I Love Lucy that aired late last year - in primetime, no less. This is a 180° shift from the sorts of confidence and decisions the 2000s CBS showed and made. Really weird, at least from my perspective. I'd have even understood a retrospective for Letterman airing then, maybe even a Letterman variety show special. Heck, give Ferguson a one-off primetime hoorah. Judge Judy... just mind blowing.

NCIS season finale airs on Tuesday May 13 (episode 24)
I don't know what your confusion is.

I suppose I'm indifferent about Tomorrow People. It certainly had problems, but I would have watched a second season. At least they wrapped up most of the storylines.

Actually Revolution is a TBD again.
All the "Revolution cancelled by NBC" posts are now "Revolution cancelled by NBC?"
And minus the ? again

I can't believe there's been no official cancellation of Super Fun Night yet. ABC can't actually be thinking about renewing it?
Update: Officially canceled. Can't each network just release all their cancellations at the same time?

Not surprised about Revolution. Will still finish season 2 just to see how it ends.
Expensive show not owned by NBC and it's lost about 50% of its audience since last season. Some people here called it that it would be DOA without a strong lead in.

We go through this every year. People here will sample shows, then drop shows they claim doesn't float their boat or flat out says sucks.
But, as in the case of Agents of Shield, the show actually gets better and is getting alot of views, buzz and comments, people here end up being curious again. And now that it's renewed for another season, they now want to buy the BDs, stream it, buy episodes online to catch up.

Not necessarily. It was pulled from the schedule by NBC a few days ago along with Believe. Now that it's flat out cancelled, I don't think NBC will air the remaining episodes. There's no incentive to show them now and they don't even own the show (FOX owns it). Hulu might post them.
