Two-time BAFTA-winning actress Olivia Colman (The Iron Lady, Twenty Twelve) and Emmy-winning actor David Tennant (Doctor Who, Spies of Warsaw) star in the new gripping drama Broadchurch, created and written by Chris Chibnall (Law & Order: UK, Torchwood). The new series centers on a quiet seaside town following the shocking murder of a young boy and the impact it has on the tight-knit community when everyone becomes a suspect. Premieres tonight on BBC America. It's only 8 episodes. Will check it out. If you've already seen it, please no spoilers.

I've seen the pilot...it's REALLY good. If you like shows like TWIN PEAKS and THE KILLING, this is in the same ballpark.

Gripping! Pilot was VOD ahead of premier so just finished. Last few minutes really set up a few WTH and new questions. Will definitely watch more. Heavy though.

I caught this tonight and was hooked. Lots of suspects and intrigue and there's the entire backstory of DI Alec Hardy that needs to be explained.

Anyway, not knocking your assessment of the quality of the show since we're in for the duration, it seems. Really like Tennant's partner, who gives a totally convincing, understated performance.
From what I've read about the show, there will be lots of secrets revealed about the townspeople, so maybe it will turn out to have more similarities to Twin Peaks than I think.

Not disputing the quality...I really liked the first episode...but Twin Peaks was (IMHO) a league of its own just due to the unpredictability and quirkiness that was wholly original for the time.

I really dug the pilot. It's nice to see Tennant be more subdued. I love him but he can get over the top real fast sometimes.
And if you watch a lot of British TV, there are a ton of familiar faces.

Well I did see Walder Frey.
I thought this looked low budget and cheap. Do they use a different type of camera or something? Videotape? It reminded me of daytime soaps. Also hated the constant bass beat and the soundtrack overall was annoying. Didn't think it got interesting until after the last commercial break. Also didn't buy the grief acting of the family at all. A lot of complaining but I am very interested to see what happens. Mainly just wondering why it looks different.

I really enjoyed this pilot but I had to turn on closed captioning because I could not make out half of what the characters were saying.

Watched the first episode and it looks like it will be a gripping series... so many secrets to unveil. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

I enjoyed this more than I'm enjoying The Bridge and what few episodes I saw of the 3rd season of The Killing. But... I'm quite tired of this story. There is only so many murder stories I can watch before it gets repetitive...

Re: Broadchurch -- (New Murder Mystery) Series Thread -- BBC America
Perhaps I've watched enough UK mysteries to be tired of the genre, but aside from some quality performances, Broadchurch feels like an episode of Midsomer Murders stretched to quadruple the length -- a murder has been committed, everyone in town is a suspect, there will be red herrings for the next 5-6 episodes until the secrets of the entire town are laid bare and the killer is revealed.
I'll keep watching for now, but since this isn't airing "live" in the US, it will be very tempting to simply go to Wikipedia and see who killed Danny Latimer.

Fantastic series. I like how methodical it was when it came to investigating the case. Glad to hear there is going to be a second series of it, but honestly have no idea how it will play out after this one.

It might have been mentioned in one of the Fox 2013-2014 season threads...in case it hasnt been brought up...
Fox has added another event series to its growing slate of event series.
Ahead of the network's Thursday presentation to the Television Critics Association, Fox handed out a series order to the adaption of Broadchurch, the U.K.'s most-watched drama of the new year.
Series creator Chris Chibnall (Dr. Who, Camelot) will executive produce the new incarnation, with production beginning in January for a debut during the 2014-15 season.
Set in an American town, Broadchurch (working title) follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face from where he might have fallen. Although the cause of his death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.
Chibnall will pen the premiere episode and executive produce the series with Shine America's Carolyn Bernstein (The Bridge) and Jane Featherstone (The Hour, Utopia) from drama producers Kudos. The series will be distributed by Shine International.
Broadcast earlier this year on ITV, the U.K.'s Broadchurch starred David Tennant and Olivia Colman and garnered critical acclaim en route to more than 10 million viewers for its series finale.
"Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute -- which is exactly what we look for in an event series," Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said. "We love the layered characters, we've seen how well-received it's been in the U.K., and we're lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the U.S. audience."
Broadchurch joins a slate of event series at Fox, including the revival of 24 with Kiefer Suthlerland and M. Night Shyamalan and Chad Hodge's Matt Dillon starrer Wayward Pines as the network looks to miniseries in a bid for prestige and to create DVR-proof fare.
"We are thrilled that this compelling series from creator Chris Chibnall and our sister company Kudos is going to be adapted for the American TV audience,” Shine America CEO Rich Ross said. “And Fox is the perfect partner to help make Broadchurch an event here in the U.S. as it was earlier this year for millions of British viewers.”
The Fox adaptation comes two months after Chibnall inked a two-year development deal with Elisabeth Murdoch's Shine division Kudos and three months after ITV ordered a second season of the drama.
In addition to Wayward Pines and 24: Live Another Day, Fox also is also developing event series based on Shogun and The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Clearly for the folks that need subtitles.
Also I might have finished this series on Sunday - it may have been superb.

Totally agree. The first line in the first review I read said that you would find out who the killer was, and after The Killing, that was a big selling point for me.

Some of the language is a bit tough to understand.
I did have a craving for Fish and Chips.
