Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Rains of Castamere" -- 6/02/13

I've had this event spoiled since season 1, so it was nice that we finally got to it. Only one more thing needs to happen and my mind will be clear for the rest of the series.

I don't understand Jon's reaction to just up and leave like that.

Game over for the Lannister's, Bran controls Hodor.

Probably either because the Wildlings were trying to kill him, or when he saw the wolves he knew that Bran and Rickon were in the tower, so he wanted the raiding party to chase him so they didn't go after the kids.

What do people do, just film themselves watching it waiting for those "oh shit" moments?

He didn't make a move to protect Ygritte though (well besides shove her out of the way). I mean even Sam charged a White Walker.

As for the wolves, I thought Direwolves are supposed to be more plentiful up North. Quite a leap for Jon to instantly think, "Oh Bran and Rickon must be up here."

Side note because I can't remember, did Jon ever learn that Bran and Rickon are "dead"? Or that Winterfell was razed? (show-wise)

I hate to be "that guy" but while I was surprised by the RW, I have to say for me that it did not pack the emotional punch that Ned's beheading did. I think this is because I really disliked all 3 of the characters that got killed off. I just found they all made ridiculous decisions or did dumb things that I was actually ok with the result. Hopefully they did not blow their entire load on this episode and the finale will be good as well.

If it was in another episode, I'd be saying how awesome Grey Worm was. Hell, I said it anyway.

In the first place, staying was no longer an option -- once he refused to execute the horse breeder, the Wildlings viewed him as a southern loyalist and would have killed him.

In the second place, he's been looking for his opportunity pretty much since he joined up with the Wildlings. This was the best chance he got. Now he can (presumably) race back to Castle Black and warn the Nights Watch of the impending Wildling attack.

Sure some crazy reactions on Twitter/Facebook.

"victoria a" wrote "im seriously balling right now. why game of thrones why ?!?"

Her BF must show her old "Faces of Death" videotapes to get her really worked up.

I was shocked by this turn of events. I'm reading the books, but am only at the beginning of book three, so I had no idea this was going to happen. I love how unpredictable this show is. And I really hope Danaerys swoops in with her dragons and burns the Lannisters out of power.

I tend to agree. I thought the scene was incredible, but they all had it coming. Robb and Catelyn always made bad decisions, it's like a Stark family tradition or something.

I have a feeling that episode 10 is just going to continue the craziness, and it's not going to be an "aftermath" type season finale that we got in the previous seasons.

They filmed that scene very well and I'm glad they didn't go exactly like the book. That would have been a bit too much, IMO. Plus, PETA would have probably been all over them if they showed it as written.

Not necessarily, provided that the stove or skillet are hot enough.

People for the Inhumane Treatment of Animals.

Either that, or the Freys used a Mediterranean caterer.

If the aftermath is anything like the book, PETA might be up in arms anyway. Hope D&D don't shy away from it.

First, loved the episode & felt that it was really well-done although not perfect. Just a few nit-picks. Would have liked to see the following:

(1) A bit more fighting back from the Stark group...there was a tiny sliver of hope in the book that they might be able to fight their way out as opposed to wholesale slaughter. Especially missed Dacey Mormont (did they think viewers would confuse her with Brienne?) & the Smalljon's heroic attempts to protect his king by overturning the table over Robb to shield him from arrows. Also would have like to see Greywolf go down fighting (perhaps letting Arya loose him...she deserved a small measure of vengeance).

(2) Cat's going mad just before her demise. Very natural reaction to seeing what she presumed to be her last living child being murdered before her eyes. The book's description of her clawing her face and her final thoughts when her head was yanked back by her hair (not the hair, Ned loves my hair) poignantly captured the moment. Also missed the 'swirling chaos' of the scene, but that was probably due to it being told from Cat's POV in the book.

(3) Arya's cliffhanger moment. Remember reading the scene & thinking that there was no way Martin would kill her off...and then recalling what had just happened and dreading the worst. My wife, who is only on Book 2, agrees that it would have been a mind-blowing ending, although incredibly cruel...especially if they didn't reveal whether or not Arya survived until Season 4.

(4) Perhaps a tiny reminder of what the bread-and-salt symbolized and how this further deception set Robb's mind at ease regarding their safety under Walder's roof. I believe we saw it earlier when the Night's Watch came to Craster, but some viewers might have thought it really foolish of Robb & Co. to be so trusting with so little assurances.

Interesting to see some of the tradeoffs...Walder's wife for Jinglebell (whether to make Walder seem even more callous or to make Cat seem less harsh considering who she was holding hostage). The death of Talisa (and unborn child) vs. Jeyne's being kept safely away for fear of increasing tensions at the wedding. At least the end of Talisa's story answers some questions & theories (at least for the series).

to Walder (deliciously evil & demented) and to Rickon, who showed once again that the child actors can hold their own with the adults.

Random trivia corner: the drummer in the "orchestra" of assassins at the wedding is played by Will Champion, the drummer from Coldplay.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Rains of Castamere" -- 6/02/13

Catelyn went mad at the end in the books? I would have liked that much more.

I also agree that it would have been nice to have at least some fighting back by the Starks.

Still disappointed that Arya didn't let loose the direwolf for some semblance of vengeance.
