Tywin explained this in the scene where he told Tyrion that he would be marrying Sansa. A Lannister and a Stark will bear an offspring that will have claim to the lands to the north. After Tywin kills Rob Stark, Sansa's child will be next in line. Also that child would be a legitimate heir that Tywin can control. The original plan was to marry Joffrey to Sansa but that changed when marrying Joffrey to Margeary to gain favor from House Tyrell turned out to be a better option. Now Tywin's plan B is for Sansa is for her to marry Tyrion and use her and her offspring to gain control over the north.

I think... I re-watch every episode with the closed captions on so I can better understand who is talking to whom and why.

Late coming to this thread. But that was why the first half of book 3 felt like a chore to me and I had to make myself sit and read it. Once I passed about the halfway point, I couldn't put the damn book down it was that good.
