Yes. At the time when it got canned, Shawn Ryan said it probably would have gotten 1 more season had CBS owned it.

That's one thing I always hated about CBS, they almost never let any of their shows wrap up properly.

Viewers don't matter. The coveted demo rating does.

NCIS is syndicated and is one of the most popular shows on TV. It gets decent ratings. Old People wealthy = does not matter. They are not going to suddenly stop buying Coke and switch to Pepsi (and if they do, they are going to be dead soon enough.) Get them young. Sell cigarettes to kids, not someone 60 etc.!. The demo is what matters, not viewers.

Must have been one of the lower episode number syndication deals out there.
The Unit had 69 episodes. While 88/100 is the target, shows can, have and will be syndicated with less. Veronica Mars, Firefly, Arrested Development, Heroes etc. They just won't make as much money since it can't be properly stripped. 50ish seems to be the lowest number, but if it's a 'cult' show, it'll get out there. The Unit obviously is not, but has been syndicated (might still be, never watched it).

Shit, now just being streamed on Netflix can get you renewed (Carrie Diaries)

If The Good Wife didn't get the syndication/streaming deal with Hallmark and Amazon, it probably would have gotten cancelled after this past season.

Blue Bloods is in trouble right now because it lacks an after market deal to get CBS money and of course is an older skewing show.
GW would either be dead, or a lucky 13 episode order just in case a drama failed (which seems unlikely now that CBS unveiled their new schedule with 1 new drama). The Mentalist and GW are gone this year. Blue Bloods, even with such a huge amount of viewers, is as well.

Elementary is even doing pretty poor. It would barely be considered a hit on NBC as it's been in high 1's.

BBs might get some luck from Lifetime. It's just such an old skewing show I can't see what network would want it.

Well, HIMYM, 2 Broke Girls, Big Bang Theory, & Elementary are in their usual spots, so I'm good.

Sorry to see Rules of Engagement go.

Robin Williams back on TV? It's got a great time slot for me to never watch ever.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

I don't disagree with the demo comments, they are key, overall viewers though have gained a little more traction lately. You sell expensive automobiles to older people of wealth, and they'll pay for it if the wealth factor is present (this is all per an article from a few years ago) but the standard things like coke, most movies, cigarettes and junk food go to the 18 - 49 crew.

That said I should watch an episode of Blue Bloods just to see what ads air during that.

Also FWIW, Elementary has only crossed below the 2.0 threshold once and the repeats seem to hold up reasonably well. I'm still confused as to how networks believe you can build an audience with month long gaps between new episodes.

They need to introduce new shows. So sometimes they need to cancel shows with big ratings to make way for newer stuff (Numbers).

This will most likely be The Mentalist's final season. Already has syndication deal with TNT and after this season will have well over 100+ episodes in the can. Bruno Heller also promised to wrap the Red John arc.

Old people of wealth don't matter. 18-49 do.

What matters more - selling a Toyota to a 21 year old who will no doubt own 10+ cars in their lifetime (maybe 10 Toyota's?!?), or to an old person who is buying their last car before they die?

CSI Miami got canned after getting a syndication deal with AMC. But with almost 300 episodes in the can, they could afford to get rid of it to launch a new show.

Introducing new shows is fine, saying "Hey this is your last season" while you still have 2 episodes to produce doesn't seem that difficult.

Depends what you profit more off of, selling a new Corolla every 15 years or selling R8s to mid-life crisis CEOs and Bruce Willis.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

Yep, TVByTheNumbers is about the only good one left, though they really need to put their ratings in a damn database. I figured maybe after Zap2It took over but nope.

I know how it works inside and out, it's all pretty basic, but there's been a bit of a shift in recent years, though more toward 25 - 54 demo than actually being "50+".

Not that it matters, I'm in key demo. Them taking wealth factors and extending the age ranges has been entertaining to watch, but key demo will remain king for a long time to come. I still haven't fully figured out how the Live+7 really factors into their decisions.

Plus keep in mind almost all the shows we've been discussing outside of The Unit have been on a serious downtrend with overall viewers and consist of piss poor demo ratings. Everything has gone down sharply the last few years and the additional factors seem to mean more these days.

Live+7 seems more like a talking point. Really, syndication and streaming matter more. iTunes Downloads certainly don't matter either. Ooh, downloaded 100k times a $2 a pop. 200k (minus Apple's fees etc). That'll save a show...

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

Hostages apparently has a 15 episode order and I recall it being mentioned as a limited series.

Deadline says H50 is really in no danger because its CBS owned and the TNT deal.

I can't see Reckless surviving when it debuts midseason. It's apparently a soap opera-like procedural. Maybe that dude from The OC who's the lead might attract some younger woman viewers.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

That's the confusing aspect, Live+7 makes a huge difference (Elementary goes from a 2.0 to a 3.3, Glee goes from a 1.8 to a 2.9, The Office goes from a 1.7 to a 2.8, The Following goes from a 2.4 to a 4.2, Grey's from a 2.7 to a 4.0) but you know all commercials are skipped. But the current Nielsen ratings are Live + Same Day so most commercials are still skipped regardless.

So I'm curious if it matters for a bubble show like Hannibal that may score a 1.0 Live but has a 2.0 by the end of the week.

Syndication matters more when a show it up for renewal on it's 3rd or 4th season more so than new (unless it has one of those ridiculous 10 + 90 deals like Anger Management and Meet the Browns)

Surprised NCIS: Red isn't on the schedule. Guess it didn't get picked up. Was expecting it to be after NCIS:LA making Tuesday 100% NCIS.

If you have a ratings box and a DVR, you need to watch commercials or your viewership doesn't count. I saw tweets from Shawn Ryan and Kurt Sutter mentioning that.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

Really? That's surprising and kind of silly (but understandable), but right on. Seems like it makes the ratings system even more irrelevant since obviously the viewer number is extrapolated from the sample group, and no one that DVRs is going to watch all the commercials.

It defeats the purpose of a DVR, but that is a fact.

It got passed. Kind of surprising. Was expecting Tuesday to be an all NCIS night.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

Two roles on CBS‘ new comedy series The Millers will be recast. I’ve learned that Michael Rapaport and Mary Elizabeth Ellis are leaving Greg Garcia’s multi-camera show starring Will Arnett as Nathan Miller, a recently divorced local roving news reporter looking forward to living the singles’ life until his parents’ marital problems unexpectedly derail his plans. After Nathan finally breaks the news of his divorce to his parents, Carol (Margo Martindale) and Tom (Beau Bridges), his father is inspired to follow suit and stuns the family when he leaves his wife of 43 years. Carol moves in with Will, while Tom moves in with Will’s sister Debbie and her husband — roles that were played in the James Burrows-directed pilot by Ellis and Rapaport and will now be recast. CBS TV Studios is producing.

Re: CBS Announces 2013 Fall Schedule

2 Broke Girls is really the only CBS comedy I watch, but I will check out Robin Williams and SMG's new one. I guess he's not a box office draw anymore because of his age, so moving back to TV makes sense for him.

So is the Person of Interest move a bad thing? It is one of my favorite shows.
