Re: Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown (CNN) -- Series Thread
Anthony Bourdain’s tragic death left CNN without one of its most recognizable personalities, but the cable-news outlet intends to maintain the culinary explorer’s presence at the network a little longer.
CNN will air a final season of Bourdain’s popular “Parts Unknown” this fall, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times. CNN has one finished episode and four others that will have to rely on directors and producers to complete, according to Amy Entelis, executive vice president of talent and content at CNN, who revealed the network’s Bourdain plans in an interview with the Times.
The first episode will be the only one to use Bourdain’s narration, a signature element of the series.
Other episodes in the series’ final season will rely on archival footage and memories from crew members.
A CNN spokesperson could not be reached for immediate comment.

If it were me, I'd air the one complete episode then a tribute episode and end it at that. I don't see a reason to stretch it out with archival footage.

I guess the France episode that he was shooting at the time of his death got scrapped.
These are all the episodes the LA Times says will air:
Kenya: complete
Will be pieced together:
Manhattan
Texas
Spain
Indonesia
I followed his Instagram and saw that he posted photos from these locations. I was wondering how or if they were going to air.

CNN pulls Parts Unknown episodes featuring Asia Argento.
She was featured in 2 Italy episodes and directed the Hong Kong episode from last season.
For the record, they were pulled from CNN On demand and their streaming app.
This is in response to the sexual assault allegations against here.

Promos for the final season of Parts Unknown:
Premieres this Sunday
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/b2g5fZGh9KM" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zQgOKK62GBU" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
This is going to be a sad watch. Especially not knowing what Tony's mindset was like when he was filming these episodes.

Really weird seeing Sunday's premiere episode of the final season knowing it's the lasted fully completed episode.
I thought they did a really good job with showcasing Kenya. W. Kamau Bell was a fun sidekick for Bourdain. I've never seen his show, but he seemed fun and down to earth and had good chemistry with Bourdain. Apparently Bourdain had agreed to appear on Bell's show this Fall before he took his life before he worked on it.
Should be interesting to see how they piece together these remaining episodes.
I don't want to really speculate on Bourdain's mindset when he was filming these episodes earlier this year, but he just looked old and really tired. Bourdain really aged in appearance in recent years.

Newest episode aired on Sunday night about Indonesia.
Normally I love his Asian themed episodes, but it's really lacking something without his narration. Normally he intros everyone he talks to, but without his narration, I have no idea who any of these people are. Makes the episode feel kind of incomplete. They try to compensate for it by using someone else narrating the interludes seguing from one location to another.

Kind of an eerie scene in the Indonesia episode. Bourdain was talking to someone (don't know who he was since there was no ID or voice over) about death. Mainly they were talking about the Indonesian culture about life after death.
Bourdain said that he didn't care what happens to him after death. He wanted no celebration and didn't care what they did with his physical remains.

Is anyone else watching the final season?
The West Texas episode from 2 weeks ago was good, but kind of eerie that it was filmed in April and only 2 months later he would kill himself. If Bourdain was depressed and miserable, he was good at hiding it. Very sad.
Sunday's episode was a pretty well done special. It focused on the behind the scenes aspects of making Parts Unknown and they interviewed pretty much all of Bourdain's crew and shared their thoughts of working with him.
Some really good insights shared. They showed some previously unseen behind the scenes clips and you got to see how hard Bourdain worked on this show to make it good. There was one episode from 2013 when they went to shoot in Japan and filmed in a local convenience store. Bourdain wanted to buy and sample the special egg salad sandwich. One of the crew neglected to check if they had it in stock before they filmed and as they were shooting, he walked in and it wasn't there. Bourdain got really upset.
The gist I got from the crew was that Bourdain wasn't really that nice off camera, but they loved him and loved working with him.
Looks like the series finale "Lower East Side" airs on November 11th. Sad, but I guess fitting that his last show is back in New York.

I was actually looking through YT today for some recipes, and started watching a video. Turns out it was from No Reservations. 😕
I do agree it’s fitting that his last episode is in NY.

I've been stacking up the season on the DVR and will get to it over the next few weeks. After watching every season of No Reservations and every season up to now of Parts Unknown there's no way I'm not going to see this out.

Tonight is the Series Finale.
Lower East Side is the area. As I said a few weeks ago, even though it's unintentional, seem like a good fit to end it where Bourdain is from. He's from New York. No Reservations from what I recall had it's series finale in Brooklyn.
I assume CNN will have an In Memoriam when the episode is over.
Really sad that it's over after tonight. The show was hit and miss with it's content, but there will be no one like Bourdain ever again.

I'll always have a soft spot in my viewing heart for his shows, but man he really went full "Shit on America World Tour" this season. He always sprinkled it in here and there over the years, but it typically had more of a self-deprecating and humorous tone.
This season whenever it came up it was straight-up propaganda screed. He was so vitriolic and over-the-top negative that the local choir he was preaching to would actually look uncomfortable and soft pedal his statements back to him. Maybe it had something to do with whatever was going on in his personal life, but he was definitely coming off as a much more angry and bitter man than usual this season.
