Defiance is on Earth. But it is very interesting plot (Essentially aliens come, they fight for the planet, they mess up the planet so badly that the entire planet is alien to both human and alien), now they all live on the planet.

That could be really interesting. I know there's been talk of a ME movie but I think a TV series could really work too. I wonder how they would create a Krogan though?

You just know that if Mass Effect was an HBO series, we'd be seeing blue Asari boobies in the pilot! :D

Without spoiling too much Fringe does have "travel." Can't really say more than that without ruining it for others.

Cool. The first few episodes are rocky but it's a fun ride and unlike any other show out there.

What about Continuum? It's on Earth, but involves scifi issues stemming from time travel. I'd group it with those more than something like Smallville or Eureka. It also has a serialized plot within an episodic structure.

Fringe is hard to beat, the first half of season 1 is so-so, but it just gets incredibly good after that.

It isn't "off world" scifi but Warehouse 13 is my favorite tv show on right now.

I'll watch defiance too.

Of all the Stargates, I really wish Atlantis had continued. I thought Rodney McKay was one of the best tv characters to come along in a while.

At any rate, CBS isn't giving a Trek show to someone like him, if they're even interested in doing one at all. They don't have many possible homes for a new Trek series, and I doubt they'd be interested in producing one to air on a channel they don't own-- it would be difficult to make that work financially.

I've never been able to get into Fringe. Warmed-over X-Files plots, except they're not as good at writing them. The meta-narrative is intriguing, though, I'll grant you that.

How far into Fringe did you get? Because the first season does come off a lot like X-Files Lite, but once the story arc kicks in, it gets really, really good.

I think Doctor Who is the only show currently airing that actually ventures out into space. It's just starting back up, and BBCA is airing a marathon of previous episodes starting Friday.

If they make a Trek, I wonder if it will be in the new timeline or the classic timeline. Probably new due to the movies. I'd like the Capt Riker idea since it would be after Voyager & they can use all the past shows for material. Problem with Enterprise is that some aliens were off limits since they hadn't been encountered yet. So when they do force some in, they had to never learn the alien name (Ferengi) or super classify the info (Borg) or risk major continuity errors.

I've often wondered if a Trek anthology type show could work. Stand alone episodes, bounce around between time frames and crews from week to week
It'd be the Trek universe but not the people we've seen already, or at least not focused on them. I'd have no problem with them bringing some of the previous cast back here and there to reprise their roles
Considering some of the cast is involved in the fan produced stuff they'd probably be up for a few episodes per year.

Or, staying on Trek for another thought, if the "new voyages/phase 2/whatever they call themselves now" group got steady funding at even a fraction of what the main studios spend they'd easily be able to put out a season's worth (maybe a short 10-13 episode season but still a season) of tv quality episodes a year. granted there could be copy right issues but if the current owners of trek were the ones paying that wouldn't be an issue


more on the general topic, I'd just love some good space science fiction. Doesn't have to be deep thought provoking science fiction, it could focus more on action and pretty effects as long as it wasn't completely dumbed down

Wait, you started with the fourth season? That's really not a good place to start watching the show. You should start at least at season 2 or the 2nd half of season 1, if you don't want to watch from the beginning for some reason.

Having that large of a cast on the payroll and not showing them every week would be prohibitively expensive. It's like combining all the advantages of a regular cast and an anthology series, with none of the advantages.

Those fan series can keep their cost so low because so much of the cast/crew work for free. If the shows were done for-profit with Paramount receiving the revenue, people would want to be paid for their time (as well they should).

Bringing this back from the dead.. I'd like a new 'space opera' type series as well. In the last couple years I've gone through DS9 and Voyager(on the last season now) and have seen the other Trek series' already. I'd love to see another one, I'm bummed that I'm almost out of episodes. I've always wanted the Riker series to come to fruition. I don't want something set in the past again, I want something that would start at least right after the TNG/DS9/Voyager years. Frakes has obviously aged so they'd need to set it at least 10 years after Voyager.

If there is another Trek show, where do you think it would show up? Would Netflix be an option?

Also am on season two of Fringe. Took me awhile to get through season 1, like others have said it takes awhile to get going but now I'm intrigued.

Nothing else I've tried recently has held my interest, like Defiance and Continuum.

Is there anywhere that Babylon 5 streams? I actually did watch several episodes of the first season a few years ago and thought the story seemed cool but the acting and production..effects etc. were horrid. I'd still like to give it another chance since it's so highly regarded.

I've been enjoying the crap out of Continuum. While I watched Defiance, its one of those shows that if it gets cancelled or I miss an episode, I'd be like 'meh'

Not sure it is sci-fi, but I recently finished up season one of Orphan Black, that was really good .. and bonus nudity!
