Episode 3 of 13

FX's new Cold War spy drama The Americans saw a significant boost for its second episode with DVR viewership. Live+3 data shows the freshman series’ February 6 airing jumping up 58% in total viewers and among adults 18-49. With the show’s first episode getting a 44% DVR increase in total viewers, the 58% increase for Episode 2 is a record for FX in Live+3 increases from a premiere episode to a second episode. The percentage gain is noticeably higher that the same spread on other FX series like Justified (10% increase) American Horror Story (6% increase) and Sons Of Anarchy (1% decrease). Adding in the Live+3, viewership of the 10-11:06 PM second episode of the show last week hit 3.11 million and 1.69 million among the key demo — up 1.115 million in overall viewership and 622,000 in the key demo from the Live+Day results. Those numbers are far better for the Matthew Rhys- and Keri Russell- starring show than the steep drop-off of 40% in viewership that Live+Same Day results gave the new series’ second episode. The Americans’ premiere had a 49% DVR increase among adults 18-49 and a 44% increase among total viewership.

I still can't get enough of that pic of Keri Russell.

In case you haven't gotten into this show yet, episode 1 and 2 are available on the FX website.

FX probably doesn't know what to do with the live+3 news

Some potential DVR conflicts tonight.

ABC: Nashville

CBS: CSI

NBC: Chicago Fire

TNT: Southland

USA: Necessary Roughness

TV Land: Hot in Cleveland

Plan accordingly if you need to DVR a re-air.

Also, if your on the West coast and recording the 7pm East coast airing for The Americans, this episode runs 64 minutes. You may have conflicts with your 8pm shows.

The good thing about fx is that they replay most, if not all, of their shows about and hour or two later. Hell, they're showing this episode 3 times tonight.

There have only been two episodes before tonight's and she wore a wig in the first one.

She does change her hair.

I thought it was remarkably naive of these two to think that they weren't going to kill the wife. That's my one big pet peeve of this episode. Otherwise, I enjoyed it.

Awesome episode. Poor Richard's wife. Derek Luke and Margo Martindale are nice additions.

The only thing I can think of (if they even truly believed it), was they went from being basically kids to being a newlywed couple living in the US. The american mindset has to have taken some hold on them, and if they were never the ones to straight up execute some innocent person, they might actually have some faith in what their superiors said they were going to do with her.

Me too. It's really good. The guys from Hollywood Prospectus said that the ratings took a nose dive for episode 2. I hope they correct soon. This show is amazing and it would be tragic if FX pulled the plug after one season. I'm totally hooked now.

The ratings rose 58% with DVR playback, on demand etc for episode 2. So that's a good sign.

There are a lot of things on this show that stretch credulity, but none more so than that in 1981, all anyone would be talking about at the FBI office is how much the Bureau Chief looks just like John Boy. I mean right down to the huge facial mole and everything. That's something they're all going to notice, right?

So in three episodes she is disguised once. This week she wasn't and he was when they met the wife (which just aired before I posted). Last week despite the "increased risk" she didn't disguise herself at all.

That's gotta be the same wig from The Paperboy, normally wouldn't notice this but she looks just like Kidman right there.

Really? I think it's quite easy to tell when she's wearing a wig. Probably because her hair is the first thing I notice about her.

To be really accurate, I'd say she sort of disguised herself as the nurse in The Clock episode as well.

I agree. I'm really into it. Love the cloak and dagger stuff. If it continues being this good, hopefully F/X is patient with it.

Listening to "Tusk" as I type this...really liking this show and hope it stays around. Great addition of "already in the glass, not in the jar" Margo Martindale...

Another solid ep. I knew the woman was dead once she got into the van with Mags..er..the new supervisor. ;) I hope the network realizes that if a show gets a 58% bump from DVR, then it means a lot of people watch the show, just not live. I am guessing since FX is predominantly a cable station, that will keep it safe. I think a regular network would be more likely to cancel it regardless of the good DVR numbers.

What's the last show FX has successfully launched on Wednesdays at 9 in the spring? My guess is nothing (I do not consider Dirt a success).

They should take what they can get and give it another year in a better slot.

It was a stupid and conscious decision by the writers to make the main characters a little more than amoral killers, but it was inconsistent with everything else we've seen from them. They knew the mother was going to be killed as career KGB spies.

It's a fine line, because the audience is supposed to identify with the main characters even though they are Russian spies bent on destroying America. It's a difficult task that works better in a short-run series or movie. Philip is just about the only relatable character, as a man trapped in a loveless marriage with a wife that owes more allegiance to her country than him or their children.

I was confused about the relationship between Elizabeth and that other dude. From previous flashbacks, it looked like she and Phillip were dumped here together when they were quite young. When would she have had a relationship with that other guy?

Before she got pregnant for the first time. At that point in time Phillip was just an assignment for her and she didn't really have an emotional attachement to him.

I was too busy going "What in the world made this American decide to just work for Russians just like that?"

I know they had to have found people to turn but at the same time its like "What in the world makes you think siding with the Russians is going to be better?"

They at least tried to explain away that the guy was a wild-eyed political idealist, though it was never that convincing. I doubt the Russians ever had a single African-American in their employ as covert operatives in the real world.

Unless I misheard it, they said they met working for the SCLC, a 1960s civil rights organization once rumored to have communist influences within it.

The Russians had a lot of soft ops in America, trying to foster Communist beliefs. But the KGB hardly trusted their own people, much less random Americans, to fulfill covert ops. Only potential assets inside the American government would have been let in on the knowledge they were working for the KGB.

Liking the show a lot, but the writers need to watch letting stuff into the dialogue that doesn't fit the times. I know there was something in a previous episode that caught my attention as out of place, and in this one the black guy says "you better check yourself". Were people really saying that in the early 80's?

There probably isn't a writer on the show over 30 or 35.

Joel Fields has been working in Hollywood since 1987. Joe Wesiberg is on his second career after working in the CIA. They're the two credited writers in IMDB.

Great catch because when he said that I immediately thought the same thing. We weren't saying that in the early 80s. That term started becoming popular in the early 90's as far as I can remember. Especially when Ice Cube's song came out. I don't know I'm from the Midwest maybe it was an East Coast thing and the rest of the country just got it late.

Well, yeah, it was a great episode. This show is growing and growing in me.

The Phillip character is just that great. The actor is doing an amazing job there.
