Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Synopsis:

SETH GABEL ("FRINGE") GUEST STARS WHILE THEA FACES PRISON TIME - Thea (Willa Holland) is in trouble with the police after she gets caught using a drug called "Vertigo." Oliver (Stephen Amell) thinks the only way to keep her out of jail is to find the dealer, a man who goes by the name of "The Count" (guest star Seth Gabel). Oliver turns to McKenna Hall (guest star Janina Gavankar), an old flame and current Vice cop, for help. Meanwhile, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) steps in to defend Thea, and Felicity (guest star Emily Bett Rickards) gives Oliver some disturbing news about Moira (Susanna Thompson). David Ramsey, Colin Donnell and Paul Blackthorne also star. Wendey Stanzler directed the episode written by Wendy Mericle & Ben Sokolowski (#112).

Brought to you by Microsoft Surface? You don't say!

So that was Count Vertigo. Interesting re-imagining of the character.

Enjoying the show and all, yet in some ways it feels like the generic brand of cereal that is trying to be like the original yet has to make changes. Who characters are, names, locations etc.. does not stop me from enjoying it.

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

So when does Black Canary show up?

Seems to me the show is using more out of the Batman mythos (Huntress, Deadshot, Royal Flush Gang, etc) than than GA's. I guess this is excusable since Batman's backstory is more well known than Ollie's, but it would be nice to see more GA specific characters make an appearance.

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

Other then Black Canary, I know pretty much nothing of Green Arrow characters. If one shows up, I probably won't even realize he is from the comics vs one the show created. I do know of Batman's due to various cartoons/movies. So seeing those Batman related villians show up has more meaning to me since I know who they are. Maybe that is what the show is counting on.

Regarding Black Canary news:

Spoiler:
We will get to meet the original Black Canary played by Alex Kingston (ER, Doctor Who), and the younger version played by Katie Cassidy (Supernatural).

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

As expected, Count Vertigo becomes another hackneyed drug dealer for television. A waste of a character and I find the stupid drugs storyline with Thea poorly handled to date. This show is starting to lose the momentum of its early episodes.

I will say this, the CW must be paying out the big bucks for its guest actors on Arrow. They are getting virtually all the big names from other hip shows at the moment, for small roles. The network must be desperate to establish this as a big franchise for them.

Lost has ruined dramatic television with the continuing popularity of its flashback narrative structure. Practically every show attempts it now, usually to its detriment.

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

Detective Shiva, SCPD driving while shooting one handed was goofy, otherwise i was able to suspend disbelief and enjoy this one.

Now that they are working long hours together, i await laurel and thea making out at least once. and having some pizza.

i was waiting for someone to cop on that Ollie was injected and Arrow was acting like he was under the influence, and make the connection. "hey why don't we ever see you and bruce wayne at the same time batman?"

so i guess Felicity is all crushy on Ollie. i think she should choose Noel.

Enjoyed the episode. I know very little about count chocula so his turn into a weird drug dealer didn't bother me. When the russian asked if Oliver knew why they called him the count I thought they were going to say because he liked sasame street.

Well what do you expect? They said "no capes" so obviously the same must apply to super-villians as well. You didn't expect Count Vertigo to fly with the ability to discombobulate people with a "vertigo" effect did you?

What bugs me here is because of that "no capes" policy is if Black Canary ever does show up it will be sans "Canary Cry". Now that ain't right.

The show didn't even frame the vertigo drug in a creative way, except to say how dangerous the testing for it was with all the dead homeless. I also was annoyed by the spastic performance from the Count.

Sure, Black Canary won't have her sonic scream, but I am sure they will have her take down entire rooms of armed-men by herself. No superpowers are allowed in these "realistic" superhero shows except when it comes to women in combat situations.

There always the electronic canary cry that Dinah used in the comics.

I think we are several seasons away from Black Canary. Unless Laurel has been holding out, she's a long way from lawyer to fighter.

Laurel already showed off some fighting skills earlier this season. Said something about being the daughter of a cop was the reason for the training.

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

I enjoyed the episode despite the whole Count villain storyline being one and done.

Hope we see Detective McKenna Hall again. I like her.

Interesting reveal about Yao Fei not really being bad after all and was protecting Ollie. Didn't put it together that Ollie learned that technique to fake the Russian's death from him.

Not a big fan of the whole Thea acting out storyline, but I get it. It's the CW and they have to gear some of the storylines to young girls.

The flashbacks for this show IMO work. They are establishing the 5 missing years of Ollie's life and we get to learn what led him to becoming the Arrow. I think there is still alot of story left to be told about him and Yao Fei. It would not surprise me at some point to see Yao Fei make an appearance in Starling City (possibly by May sweeps) The character seems very integral in his development in becoming Arrow.

I love the show. After watching 10 years of Smallville, I can't possibly complain about anything in Arrow.

The producers have said Canary would in some ways get here sooner rather then later so we'll see where things stand at the end of the season.

Laurel may just decide to some stuff on her own and tell no one.

As for complaints about the villains being pulled from Batman's side......Green Arrow's never had that popular or regular a Rouge's gallery.

Merlyn is currently considered his arch-enemy, and so he's in a sense already here (Still waiting to see if the son takes over for the father at some point) and the only other character of note the fans would ask for is Shado.

And technically, Kelly Hu/China White seems to have filled in that space at the moment.

Flashbacks do work, I simply think they work better as single episodes or meatier segments than what we are getting on Arrow.

Re: Arrow -- "Vertigo" -- 1/30/13

Was a week behind. I thought this episode was one of the better ones since the premier. I agree he Count was weak and spazy - will be worse if he comes back. Would have preceded he was built up as a season segment villain. They could have seeded vertigo for the front half of the season in different parts of the city.

Anyway, I felt like there was a great balance of characters and interaction. People had a reason to be on screen and it fit. I think that made it feel ensemble for the first time in a while.

Really enjoy the island element, especially when it parallels something off island.
