You could try watching the 2 1/2 minute promo and doing a google search for starters.

Looks like the version posted on Youtube and Showtime on demand is the full uncut version.

I'm leaning towards waiting until May 11th to watch the premiere. For those here who don't subscribe to Showtime, they might be more inclined to watch it now.

Wife and I just watched it. It was interesting. Feels like a mix of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and American Horror story.

Re: Showtime greenlights new horror series "Penny Dreadful" from the makers of Skyfal

I watched the first episode tonight and liked it a lot. It's impossible not to see it as a knockoff of LOEG. With each character I was reminded of either Mina, Quatermain, or Dr. Jekyll but it's above and beyond that execrable movie adaption that any lack of credit to Alan Moore can be forgiven. I doubt it will have his sense of humor in the series but it would be nice. I really like the cast of Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, and Josh Hartnett. It's a great looking show. Looking forward to the next episode to see how it develops.

Yeah, this petty much nailed the jest of the show for me.

And Eva Green is very easy on the eyes.

I watched the first episode and I liked it and will continue to watch. It felt kind of like Supernatural meets League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I like the actors and the show looks great even rather expensive actually. But yeah I'm in.

Penny Dreadful -- New Showtime Series -- "Night Work" -- 5/11/14

Episode Synopsis: Monsters and demons haunt Victorian London. In the opener, police investigate a series of gruesome deaths but renowned explorer Sir Malcolm Murray and the alluring Vanessa Ives know there is something darker at play than mere murder. They recruit an American sharpshooter and Dr. Victor Frankenstein to help them find someone close to them.

8 episode 1st season

This show was created by John Logan, who wrote Skyfall & Gladiator

Sam Mendes is an Executive Producer on the series

Series Synopsis:

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature's most famously terrifying characters - including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light - have become embroiled in Victorian London. The series stars Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights, License to Kill) and Eva Green (Casino Royale). Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger) and Danny Sapani (The Bill) also star. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychosexual thriller created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar(R) nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Logan's Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar(R) winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call The Midwife), both of Neal Street. Of the eight episodes, the first two will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who helmed The Orphanage and the acclaimed film, The Impossible starring Naomi Watts in her Oscar-nominated performance.

The 1st episode has been available free on demand for a few weeks now. If you've seen it, feel free to share your thoughts, but in spoilers if you want to get detailed until this officially airs.

I'm watching it Sunday night. Passed on the early airings/on demand.

How League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (comic, or "LXG" movie) -like is it..? I assume it's considerably different in content, but the broad premise seemed familiar the first couple of times I read about it..

Re: Penny Dreadful -- New Showtime Series -- "Night Work" -- 5/11/14

Stayed up super late to watch this. I liked it. Very cinematic feel.

Definitely has an LXG vibe with the monsters added into the mix. I really liked Timothy Dalton and Eva Green in this. Love her eyes. So evil, yet hot.

The Frankenstein introduction at the end was kind of cool.

John Logan said in the behind the scenes feature that there is no CGI on this show. Thought the monster/vampire attack scene was pretty well done.

I'm game for this one. Not sure if I want to jump in to episode 2 right away. Going to pace myself since it's only an 8 episode season.

Re: Penny Dreadful -- New Showtime Series -- "Night Work" -- 5/11/14

I had watched the pilot the other day on youtube and I watched my DVR recording this morning. I paid more attention the second time watching the pilot and I like it so far. The only thing I wonder how the storylines will progress in future seasons.

We really enjoyed the Pilot but we don't have Showtime so not sure we'll be able to follow the show.

Just watched my recording of the pilot and I'm in for sure. As one mentioned it seems to have that "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" flavor but more darker. Eva Green is perfectly cast for something like and just a perfect fit. I had doubts with Timothy Dalton but not after watching the first one.

It wasn't perfect especially the first encounter/fight in the opium den; I had huge problems with that...but I liked it enough to keep up with it now that most of the network shows are winding down.

Ep2 is "around". Still a little slow moving but building up several story lines.

Spoiler:
Possessed Eva Green, wow

The Frankenstein story line was going good I thought, and then the wow at the end, damn!

Not too interested in the Dorian Gray thing yet.

Thanks for this info.

I kind of like that there is no CGI - it has that Werewolf in London grit to it. Plus sometimes CGI makes things unbelievable.

So I guess this is getting the True Detective treatment. I hope this is just like a long 8hr movie broken up into 1hr segments.

I'll wait until there are a few more episodes on demand before I start with episode #2
