Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

I have no idea what he could possibly want to do that's different from AMC, and I shudder to think what we might get as a result.

AMC’s hit drama The Walking Dead has lost its showunner — again.

Glen Mazzara, who took over the zombie drama’s showrunner position from Frank Darabont last year in the middle of the show’s second season, is leaving the show.

The cable series that’s brutal about killing off characters is seemingly just as tough to survive as a writer-producer. Here’s a flurry of official statements:

Mazzara: “My time as showrunner on The Walking Dead has been an amazing experience, but after I finish season 3, it’s time to move on. I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

Here’s AMC and Mazzara: “Today, AMC announces the season 4 pick-up of The Walking Dead. AMC also jointly announces with Glen Mazzara today that for future seasons, the two parties have mutually decided to part ways. Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.”

And now here’s Robert Kirkman: “I am in full support of both AMC and Glen Mazzara in the decision they have come to and believe the parties came to this decision in the best interest of the future of the show. I thank Glen for his hard work and appreciate his many contributions to The Walking Dead and look forward to working with him as we complete post production on Season 3. I am also excited to begin work on another spectacular season of this show that I know means so much to so many people. This show has always been the result of a wide range of extremely talented men and women working tirelessly to produce their best work collectively. I believe the future is bright for The Walking Dead. Thank you to the fans for your continued support.”

Oh, and yeah, the show is now officially renewed for season four. Anybody want a showrunner gig?

He renewed my faith in him after a rocky Season 2. I will be curious to see how this shapes out.

Damnit. The show really excelled with him at the helm :\

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

I'm going to guess that he and AMC don't see eye to eye on when the end point of the show should be. Or possibly the network didn't like his story pitches for season 4.

But yeah losing Mazzara is a big loss. He did great guiding the ship after Darabont was fired.

I was thinking of going back and starting to watch this again but losing Darabont was a big reason for me not to. Losing another show runner killed my interest again.

This show is AMC's biggest success ever since Mazzara took over. They should have given him whatever he wanted.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

On the other hand, this gig is going to be one of the most high demand jobs in the coming year. They will probably start production of season 4 in late spring/early summer, so they have to hire someone relatively fast.

AMC continues to prove it's a network that has succeeded in spite of itself.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

So wait, the stupid bitch that made 3 seasons* of The Killing is fine, but nobody can last longer than 2 on Walking Dead?

AMC, wtf? The only acceptable answer is to bring on Vince Gilligan as show runner for Season 4.

* well, season 3 is getting ready to roll.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

I just read something that Mazzara and Kirkman didn't see eye to eye on the length of this prison arc.

Unfortunate news.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

This is interesting:

Speculations about Mazzara’s future on the show started when AMC didn’t follow its regular routine of giving The Walking Dead an early pickup despite the record-breaking ratings performance of the show’s recent fall portion of Season 3.

There had been rumors that Mazzara was not happy on the show and may follow the slew of other showrunners who have departed AMC series – The Walking Dead‘s Frank Darabont, whom Mazzara succeeded, Rubicon creator/exec producer Jason Horwitch, who exited during production on its first and only season, and most recently Hell On Wheels showrunner John Shiban, who left after two seasons.

Jesus, AMC is getting a bad reputation. I know this is probably a job highly in demand, but after all these stories coming out, you'd think people would think twice about taking the job.

Get Mazzara to showrun AMerican Gods on HBO

DJariya 12-21-12 12:40 PM

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

 Of course Kirkman is going to support whatever decision AMC makes. He's a comic writer and was probably not making anywhere close to the salary he's making with AMC right now when he just did the comics.

bluetoast 12-21-12 12:40 PM

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

This is making me think that AMC believes the show to be 'bigger' than any one showrunner, and assumes that it will be successful no matter who they hire. A new person every two seasons, or someone that will step in line for the rest of the series.

Kind of like how Jimmy Page hired a different sound engineer on every Zeppelin album to show that he was the one responsible for the quality no matter who he picked. Except this ain't Led Zeppelin.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

Matthew Weiner and Vince Gilligan will be looking for gigs soon.

bluetoast 12-21-12 12:42 PM

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

Although HBO will probably be begging for Weiner back after he's done.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

Unlikely someone like Gilligan will be attracted to this show. He's currently working for Sony on Breaking Bad. Plus, Breaking Bad just started production of season 5B. They probably won't finish until Spring if you account editing time and post production. AMC has to hire someone before then.

Yeah Gilligan is under contract with Sony Pictures through June 2013. Meaning he can only work on/devleop shows through that studio.

My gut tells me that season 2 represented the vision that Mazarra had but that he was forced to amp things up in season 3, and without artistic control he decided to walk.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

Not sure how much it affected this decision, but I have concrete info that the cast wasn't too fond of Mazzara because he found out that killing main cast = big ratings, and some of his scripting ideas were shocking them.

Oh yea, expect 3 more major deaths before the season is over, too.

My favorite part about Breaking Bad ending is knowing Gilligan will be able to do just about anything he wants for his next series and somebody will buy it.

Funny too since BB is anything but a ratings hit

When did you stop? You're missing out, since i'd say this season showed losing Darabont wasn't a big loss at all.

Which is pretty stupid, since all of them should have been at least somewhat familiar with the comics and their characters enough to know that not everyone would last.

So does Evan T. Reilly get promoted to showrunner now, or do you think they'll bring in someone new?

Hopefully, it's him.

I would support promoting him instead of hiring someone from the outside. He's a co-executive producer and has written a good number of episodes. He also worked on Rescue Me as a writer/producer.

Re: Another "Walking Dead" showrunner steps down

Another horrible move by AMC, as Glen had turned The Walking Dead into an actually compelling show and not coasting off the sheer appeal of the zombie apocalypse. Please, this move was nothing more than about money. Glen will get better offers from other networks now to be a showrunner. AMC is notoriously cheap to their talent unless it's Mad Men.

AMC, the dumbest and luckiest network executives in the business.

I say they go a completely different direction and hire Russell T Davies.

Darabont leaving was the best thing to happen to the show. His pacing was too slow, and he was going to veer from the storylines even further.

That would be a good choice.

AMC really needs to start fostering some goodwill with their show runners before they start scaring away all the talent.

They're going to have to promote from within, AMC is quickly becoming the diseased whore that no one wants to sleep with. Unless your name is Veena Sud, they despise you.
