Why wouldn't he approve? Fuck Brody and that's apparently what the US intelligence agencies think too.

Yeah I don't think it was because of Saul's approval or disapproval. Estes shouldn't even care what Saul thinks of killing Brody. The reason it's so under wraps is because this isn't some CIA mission to capture a terrorist and put him on trial... it's murder. The fewer people know, the better.

Plus its a US Congressman who happens to be a national hero. I was wondering what the cover story would have been. I'm sure some office would have known he was picked up by a car at a certain time.

Because they made a deal, and I think saul understands that. I'd imagine in the spy business if you get a reputation for breaking your promises, not many people are going to work with you down the road.

Yeah, that Quinn investigation thing threw me for a loop as well. I'd forgotten about Carrie's comments to Saul earlier. Damn this show is tense.

Quinn is participating in a Black Ops operation. I think F. Murray Abraham is one of the leaders of it and Estes is participating. One of their objectives if I'm not mistaken is to kill Brody.

If I followed correctly, he is another CIA guy that operates overseas, mainly in black ops/assasinations etc. Kind of a regional director maybe, and quinn apparently works under him. That's how saul knew him, and estes being a deputy director obviously has a wider scope that we typically see on the show.

Saul becomes suspicious of Quinn, and did some off the books research on him. Found out that there was a lot of stuff they didn't know about him, and he was followed and a meeting with him and a man on a bus was observed. Saul recognized man-on-the-bus as a big shot in the intelligence game and realized that Quinn was taking orders from someone over his head.
Turns out that, unbeknownst to Saul and Carrie, Quinn is actually a black ops/wet works guy taking orders from Estes and man-on-the-bus who has been tapped to kill Brody once Nazir is dead or captured and he is no longer useful.

^ Which means those above Saul and Carrie's paygrade have known all along that Brody's plea deal was a sham.

To be fair, I think everyone, even Brody, knows the plea deal is a sham. Would -you- let him walk? Carrie may be the only one who believes it, but then again, she's having fantasies about them living together on a ranch or something..cuz she's crazy.

Possibly everyone kinda "wink-wink" knows it is a bit of a sham that he would simply walk free, but certainly no one thought he would be executed withing seconds of Nazir going down, if for no other reason than it seems like kind of a dumb idea. Sort of like gunning down Nazir given the chance to instead endlessly interrogate him after capturing him standing outside a diner on Main Street, USA in broad daylight (as they thought he was).

Bear in mind that Estes would have been killed had Brody's attack gone through, and he knows it. So it's personal for him.

Was Estes in the safe room with Brody and the bomb vest? If so I had forgotten that. And yeah, at this point even the Vice President doesn't know Brody planned to murder him. Those sort of things are hard forgotten once learned and it's hard to imagine the possible next president wouldn't learn that eventually.

I thought she was just super emotional with the bi-polar thing in season 1 and with everyone doubting her and THINKING she was crazy led to the breakdown
This season though she seems completely looney tunes.

Made it through this episode in our marathon last week. It's easy to tell the difference in story quality between season 1 and 2 when you're watching them back to back. I'd still consider myself hooked on the show but we definitely didn't have that need to watch one more episode like we did after each in season 1. We may try to finish up the season tonight.
