Characters un-welcomed: USA cancels Fairly Legal, Common Law, and Political Animals
by Eric Thurm November 2, 2012
Proving that lightning in fact strikes more than twice, USA handed out cancellations to not one, not two, but three of its original series today, an almost unprecedented move for a network whose shows all seem to have been airing for an eternity. Quirky, soapy cop procedural Common Law and quirky, soapy political drama miniseries Political Animals were not renewed after their freshman seasons while quirky, soapy legal procedural Fairly Legal got the axe after its second season. That leaves behind only shows like Psych, White Collar, and Suits to fill the quirky procedural void in USA’s schedule.

I've never seen Common Law or Political Animals, but I did watch Fairly Legal regularly. Sure, it was fluff, but Sarah Shahi...
Here's hoping she gets a regular gig on another series.

Sarah Shahi is now on Chicago Fire, which apparently no one in this forum watches. Her little arc starts up soon. Not sure when. She's filming 6 episodes. I'm caught up with it and its been pretty good so far.
Political Animals chances of a 2nd season were slim anyways since it was promoted as a limited series. The ratings needed to be outstanding to warrant a 2nd season and they weren't.

Wednesday at 10pm on NBC after Law and Order Svu. It's produced by Dick Wolf. It stars Jesse Spencer from House and Eamonn Walker from Oz.
As I just said, she has yet to appear on it though.

What's the story behind these? Is USA seeing its brand getting less effective, or is it just cost prohibitive to have so many originals? Were the ratings just terrible?

The hotness of Sarah Shahi can't be contained. She'll have plenty of work in the future.
Really bummed about Common Law, though. That was shaping up into a good buddy cop show, along the lines of Psych.

I liked the first season of Fairly Legal, but the second lost me. Still, I'm surprised that show didn't last. It was quintessential USA.

I was unimpressed by all 3 of the shows, though granted I didn't stick with them very long, and I know a lot of the USA shows are all about the characters and the more you watch, the more you get into it. Just glad Suits, Psych, and White Collar aren't going anywhere, since those are my three favorites. Hopefully that frees up room for them to try some new series out in the future.

I had no interest in any of the 3. Will not miss them.
But yes hopefully Sarah Shahi get another gig after Chicago Fire gets cancelled. She is smokin.

I watched Common Law and Fairly Legal but I won't miss either. If you haven't seen Chicago Fire its pretty good. Its not Rescue Me but then what is? And Psych, I can't believe it's still on.

Psych, White Collar, and Covert Affairs are tops for me. Covert Affairs may actually be the best of those three now. Burn Notice is losing me. Royal Pains I still watch but I wouldn't miss it at all.

The only one of those shows I liked was Political Animals. I'm sorry it didn't get picked up. I've tried, and stopped watching, all the other USA dramas, except for one. Suits, I like a lot. The rest, too little time.

Too bad about Fairly Legal. That was a fun show. I lied season two because there wasn't a bunch of hatred between the two woman on the show.

Wasn't impressed by FL (although wife liked it) but liked the couple of episodes of Common Law I caught rerun On Demand. It had some snappy repartee between the principals, but then, so does Psych & a bunch of other contemporary shows. Other than that, it was pretty much a formula show.
On the other hand, I've talked to a lot of people who didn't like Monk although it ran for eight seasons. They seem to prefer their cops in the NCIS/CSI/Law & Order mold rather than quirky (okay for some peripheral characters to be quirky but not the main ones).
