Datak's son, as seen in the pilot, is practically a different character. And not just because of the change in his grooming. In the pilot he acted like a 5th generation mafia heir. You know, the sort that act like everything belongs to them and their shit never, ever stinks. But from about the second episode onward he's devolved more and more into a bumbling, clueless, whiny pussy.
in the move from pilot to show, someone decided to turn him into AJ soproano. if this were on showtime instead of syfylis, i would expect a "what, no fuckin ziti now" scene.
i swear that kid is a sheep's vagina

i have a theory that in the pilot they envisinoed him as "datak's son". violent, mean and angry, a chip off the ole shtakco.

Bump
FYI, the season finale is tonight.
In case you didn't know, this was renewed for a 2nd season. Will return in 2014. I'm a few weeks behind, but I've enjoyed most of the season. It hasn't been perfect as a science fiction series. I know a lot of the more hardcore science fiction people here haven't loved it. I do prefer Warehouse 13 and Continuum over this to be perfectly honest.

They also haven't really explained why humans coexist with the aliens. I can perhaps see humanity deciding it's too much effort to kill them all, but live together?

Can't believe they're waiting almost a whole year to bring this back. Awful decision sure to kill what little momentum it may have.

Oh, but they want us to play the GAME in the meantime! That'll keep us entertained for the next year...
I thought the episodes got better as the series went on. My wife watched last week's episode with me and said that she wished she had watched it from the beginning. I'm sure the Blu-ray will be out soon enough.

Hmm, I have about 5 unwatched episodes and didn't really like it to that point..Does it get any better? Sounds like they don't delve much more into why this all happened in the first place.

Wondering that myself. I love the game but from what I have seen (the first 3 or so eps) the show pretty much sucks. The special effects are just so low budget and horrible, like the scene with the dude who looks like Data from Star Trek fighting off the Hellbugs in his house.

taking a year before the show returns? do they think they are Mad Men?
i didn't care for the last episode. It felt cheesy, really looked low budget, and didn't make logical sense. Don't attack at the Irath camp because they are outnumbered, but come back at night with three people with guns? couldn't they have rallied their allies, armed them and them attacked?
i am interested in the cave graffiti. the three symbols on the right look like rubber chickens, the kaziri are advanced joy buzzers, and i wonder if the key to the whole shebang will turn out to be a whoppie cushion. The voltans had the humor of 12 year old boys.
i really want to like this show so much and it fights me every step of the way.

I really have to think of most cable shows like yearly mini series because they are off for so long, which is good and bad. Eleven months is a little long though, it may not work as well for a show, with so much on these days people will have to be reminded that it is even returning. At least they are better about telling us when a show will return these days instead of leaving it up in the air for months.
And having such a long break is easier when they don't do cliffhangers.

The show looks low budget because it IS low budget. And that's a good thing! Keeping the budget down is the only way a show like this will stay on the air. People should stop complaining about that.

That is one thing I'm not really bothered by, it looks like they blew 90% of their season budget on the first episode and now it is a rather simple show in regards to needing effects, a lot less then we may think their would be, yet I have not really given that too much thought. If they go too big it just means it will get cancelled because it is not worth the cost.

I decided to delete the five recordings I hadn't watched.. Maybe if it shows up on Netflix before the next season I'll give it another chance. I also didn't care at all about the low budget, I just didn't think it was very good..and I'd looked forward to it for awhile before it aired.

It's really just not a very good show. Or at least as good as it should be, regardless of budget. It's like they're splitting the difference in tone between BSG and SG1 and it's just not working out. I've liked some episodes to varying degrees but the last episode fell especially flat for me. And killing off a main character and then reviving them five minutes later through magic means I'm probably out.

The finale wasn't amazing or anything, but I've been entertained this season. Delaying the second season a whole year will almost certainly kill its ratings, unless the videogame becomes a monster hit.
I think it disappointed some because hardcore sci-fi fans were looking for another BSG. I never had those expectations, so Defiance did enough to build an intriguing cast of characters. Nolan was probably a little too old as the male lead, there are virtually no young male protagonists on the show except the junior deputy and he wasn't a primary character.

I just want this show to be successful enough to have a porn parody.

After kind of slogging through the season, I finally finished it up last night.
It did pick up towards the end. I would say that I liked episodes 10-12 more than the finale.
A few obversations/questions:
1) I'm not surprised that Joshua wasn't killed off. I know doing that is kind of cheap plot device and really served no purpose since he's the star of the show.
2) So Stahma poisoned Kenya. Did she die? I couldn't tell. They kind of left that hanging. It was interesting in the previous episode when she told Kenya that she loves her husband's cruelty.
3) WTF with Datak murdering Colonel Marsh? He wins the election, and in a fit of rage commits murder? Okay? And he's about to get caught/arrested.

Mia Kirshner was not on the call-back sheets for Season Two, so I guess she's dead, -or not coming back for awhile...

Finished through the season. As others said, not great but passable. I agree June 2014 is a long way off, but it's smart to place as a summer show. If it was fall/spring I think it would so worse in ratings.
Budget aside, I think biggest problem with the show is identity crisis. Doesn't know if it wants to be a drama, western or scifi. There were some good characters and performances, but plot and world development were really lacking.
There is a lot of backstory to mine, to include status of world and space. Jeremiah did a better job of world scope and mostly focused one location. They had some good threads, but didn't deliver enough mystery or suspense. Example: clone human agents.
I think they wasted some characters too. Mayor's sister was great to watch, but was missing in episodes. The Mayor's ex was great too...let's kill him off?! Irisa and her group were less convincing or interesting. They kept going back to comma guy, only to have nothing come of it. Also, visions of dead brother never went anywhere really.
Standout episodes for me were flashback with old bar owner and the stasis astronaut.

There are five web episodes out called The Lost Ones. They are about 5 minutes each.
