I pay around 135$ a month for a premium package that includes all the digital tiers and 2 premium channels (HBO/Starz)

Honestly of those 250-350 channels we as a family only watch maybe 30 channels (5-10 main channels, the others we peak into once in awhile).

I would gladly pay just to have access to those channels

AMC
FX
USA
A&E
History
Comedy Central
Discovery
Syfy
All the sports channels (ESPN, MLBNetwork, NHL network, NFL network, Fox, ESPNU etc)

Kid channels:
Sprout, Disney JR, Nick Jr.

Premium: Showtime, HBO.

And we are good to go.

I thought the same thing, but these channels obviously appeal to someone.

Not counting scripted shows on networks like AMC, FX, USA etc, I also watch stuff on Food Network, The Travel Channel, Nat Geo and Bravo etc.

Some in this forum may not watch those channels and think they are worthless, but they definitely have an audience.

I don't watch Fuel, DIY, TV One, BET or Reelz, but they have their followers.

Alot of people may think FOX News is shit and worthless, but it's the highest rated news cable channel right now.

Never going to happen.

If you want MTV, you have to get 5 shitty channels with it.

You like AMC? Hope you like Oprah and Ion!

Packaging one good station with several shitty is how it works. Were likely to never have the "a la carte" model.

I just turned on Nickelodeon for the boy. On the bottom, DirecTV has a banner talking about the shut off. Then, overlayed in the middle of the show, Viacom has their banner with their spin. Makes it completely unwatchable. And now Viacom had their own commercial about it getting pulled.

Ugh, this shit again? I watch Futurama, but otherwise, I really won't be missing anything. I still like to have all my choices, though.

Oh yeah - I forgot Futurama. Damn.

Yeah Futurama is the only thing I'd miss for now. Many options to buy the episodes through my TV though(Xbox Zune video, probably Vudu, Amazon IS, etc.), no biggie for one show.

Well, a lot of the CC shows that I watch (Daily, Colbert, South Park) have their episodes up on their site the next day, so no big loss, really. I do love Futurama, but I buy those blu-rays, so no big deal there either.

The only problem is in the macro sense, where without DireCTV, Viacom won't pull in the money needed to fund shows like Futurama.

Yeah, and if you are much of a sports fan you must have Sat/Cable. You will miss games and coverage. Things like NHL Gamecenter Live on Xbox Live etc. isn't enough to cover you.

Agreed. That's why I put the sports exclusion in my initial statement.

I haven't calculated it, but subscribing to individual shows for an entire season on those services seems like it will be pretty expensive. If you watch a lot of shows, would you even be saving money over something like DirecTV?
I suppose it depends on how much you watch, what's on the network sites streamed for free, how much owning it matters to you and how much a commercial free viewing experience is
worth to you.

Channels no. Shows yes.

Cable is a bloated beast trying to sqeeze as much as it can before it dies.

If you own every season of The Andy Griffith Show on dvd, then there is no need to have TVLand(unless you like watching commericals).

Hey Hot in Cleveland on TV Land is awesome. I don't enjoy watching it on Directv because they don't get the channel in HD. I wait and watch it in HD on Hulu Plus.

Wow, between Dish dropping AMC and DirecTV dropping Viacom, this is one of the few occassions I can be happy about having Comcast.

Before long, we'll be paying DirecTV $100 a month for a bunch of infomercial channels, QVC, religious channels, and foreign language bullshit.

I saw an Obama ad on AMC last night. Used to be we could at least avoid politics on non-news stations.

Interesting that he's advertising on national cable but then why not - he's got the war chest. The one good thing about DTV, compared to local cable, is that we don't get the cablenet local insert ads (where, depending on the region, you might see targeted political ads).

or the annual AFI Lifetime Achievement Salute in June.

I checked VH1 and MTV 2 and I still see they are on the air. Hope this continues or they reached a settlement.

New update from the Directv Facebook page:

Viacom Update: DIRECTV is not removing Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, TV Land and the other channels Viacom owns. You won’t lose them unless Viacom chooses to take them away. We want you to keep enjoying all your favorite shows on those channels without any interruption, and if Viacom decides to force us to take them down, we’ll show you how you can continue to enjoy your favorite shows in the interim. Stay tuned for further updates.

Sounds like Viacom is being the dickheads about this whole situation.

Just tuned to MTV to see if was still on (it is, but still looking like it's set to go off) and yeah....

....there's two competing banners rolling across the screen, each blaming each other. First time I've seen double crap like that simultaneously.

I hope they realize that the primary brand they're damaging is neither viacom or directv but programmed television.
