I think the biggest change since season 1 is now every plot line seems to involve some sort of direct supernatural presence, where in the beginning it was more subtle. There were a lot of normal human-to-human interactions and storylines, and while the vampires, shifters, Sookie's mind-reading and so on bled into these storylines, it wasn't *only* about that. Now -- aside from Andy's porno pic plotline -- every story in the show seems to rotate around a vampire or werewolf or fairy or Mexican demon or Iraqi ghost or whatever.

Now that I would agree with. While the total number of concurrent storylines going on is roughly the same as any previous season, the number that deal with supernatural stuff has definitely increased as the show has gone on.

(Although you left out Terry's storyline about his former war buddies because, so far, that one has not been supernatural.)

I still enjoy it, but I think that those human moments sort of 'grounded' the show and without them the show as a whole loses something. It reminds me a little of how Heroes went down the tubes once they started giving everyone powers, although I still don't think True Blood is anywhere near as bad a Heroes was at that point.

 This. I still like the show but for me the first season was what got me hooked. It's almost too much "monster" storyline for me. No one is just a human anymore. I wish they could have just left Lafeyette alone. He was awesome as is. Thank god they didn't make Jason a panther.

In regards to whether there were just as many storylines as earlier seasons, I don't think it's even close. There was no Alcide or wolf pack. There wasn't a shifter support group. There have been a lot of characters introduced, like Jessica, as the show has gone. And now *all* of those characters have their own separate plots that the writers feel necessary to touch upon every episode. Characters like Terry and Arlene may have appeared in all the previous episodes, but they didn't have their own separate plot - or at least not one that took on such prominence. They were more background characters. So now even the background characters seem to be given equal treatment, and they all seem to have supernatural elements running throughout their stories to boot.

Yep, Jason is really the only character the audience can relate to anymore...and given THIS epsiode, I fear we're going to find out Jason has special fairy powers as well. :(

Season 3 is really the season the show started to have all these multiple storylines...it worked (for the most part) in that season, primarliy because the "A-Story" (Russell Edgington) was so strong. It was a complete failure in Season 4 and (so far) this season as well.
