That whole, "You're not happy with dominant market share... you want total market share," presentation was exquisite to watch -- worthy of being in a top tier movie. It might or might not work, but the very way he turns up his nose at the concept of being happy with dominant market share makes him the immediate favorite for the Brass Cojones Of The Year award.
You've pointed out another thing that was disappointing about Don this season. For more than half the season he wasn't a shark and didn't seem to have any fire in him whatsoever, whether it be because he was "happy" with Megan or what, he seemed even more dead inside than when he was a drunken wreck last season. I'm hoping now that he cares again he'll go back to being a more dynamic character next season instead of walking out of meetings going "I don't care" and having them all machinate behind his back.

I believe Don will cheat at the end of the episode/season because he kind of "lost respect" for Megan. First she's all whiny because Don said no to her idea for starring in the commercial, then she's like a child, all grateful and 'appeased,' and how can a man possibly respect a woman like that? He thought he had a business-minded, responsible woman, but instead he really just has a tempermental girl. He's already got one - Sally. He don't need another.

Loved this exchange.

Pete: "I've got things to do. Don, you have my proxy."

Don: "We can do that?"

That scene had nothing to do with him "cheating" - the final montage was of all the main characters basically being alone, capped off and made obvious by the girl asking Don if he's alone.

Do you see the contraction here? First you say "IMO", then you tell us what all of us want.

1. The word you're looking for is 'contradiction'

2. It makes sense. It's his opinion that this is what we all want to see. His opinion is wrong, thus proving your post above.

You are either mistakenly, or deliberately, misreading what he said. He said:
IMO Mad Men is at its best when Draper is on the prowl.
That is a complete sentence. Then he wrote:
That's what we all want to see...
That was the start of a new sentence and is clearly a new idea detached from the "IMO."

But, thanks for the grammar correction.

Supporting something isn't an opinion. And a belief isn't exactly the same thing, either, even when unmerited. I suggest you go look at a dictionary.

I may be reading too much into the image of the partners of SCDP all standing in front of the window, but I thought it was interesting how all the "new" partners (Pete, Don, and Joanie) are on one side of the empty window and the "old" partners (Sterling and Cooper) were on the other.

Great season and great finale. It was definitely worth the wait.

I agree with the previous comments when Don was walking away it symbolized that he didn't get what he wanted out of his relationship with Megan. I loved his reaction when the blonde girl at the bar asked if he was alone.

The shot in the empty office with everyone was really cool. But, I must have missed the setup for that. When did they decide to move to a new office?

at Pete getting his ass kicked. I have to wonder if Pete's fling with Rory Gilmore will come back into the storyline next season with Trudy finding out.

If Jessica Pare does return next season, I have to assume it will be as a recurring guest star. Despite some of your nitpicks about her teeth/mouth, I think she's a really stunning woman and has the look for the time period. I would like to see her come back and bring some closure to her relationship with Don. That black and white demo reel of her that Don was viewing was really gorgeous.

I have to assume that season 6 will probably premiere in Spring 2013.

i haven't heard anyone mention this, but wasn't the girl who came up to Don at the end, Megan's friend from whom she stole the commercial idea?

I should re-phrase, her role next season (if she comes back) will be different. She won't be as integral to the season arc. Probably not as drastic as January Jones being a regular but appearing in 3-4 of the 13 episodes?

No, different actress.

I don't follow. Why would she not come back? She's still Don's wife. Anybody who is involved with Don on a day-to-day basis is going to be a big part of the show, IMO.

I've seen this mentioned in a bunch of places and it amazes me. They were both blonde but beyond that, they looked (and sounded) extremely different.

I was rooting for Pete on the train! Not only did I want Pete to come off the better in his fight against that a-hole, but I also wanted him to kick the ass of that fucking snooty-ass bitch train conductor.

As bad as Pete is, I think the other guy is worse.

If Pete can't even beat Lane in an impromptu fight there's no way he's going to beat the train guy in anything.

Re: Mad Men -- Season Finale -- "The Phantom" -- 6/10/12

Just finished Season 5, as I should be done Season 6 and 7.1 in the next 2 weeks so I can start watching the final 7 episodes live.

I have to say that while I liked Season 5, I think it was the weakest of the 5 seasons so far that i have watched. I don't want that to come off as negative, as Season 5 was great, but compared to the other 4 seasons, it just wasn't AS great. Season 5 started off slow, IMO, but really picked up in the 2nd half and ended with a bang.

Please no spoilers, as I am just thinking out loud here in my observations:

-I'm interested to see where the show goes with Peggy at a rival firm, as there has to be a way she is wooed back to work for Don?

-With Betty still on the show (limited role), I'm sure she will have one last fling with Don, but her character will never be happy even if she actually finds true happiness.

-Pete is an interesting character because he is very successful at his job, but he seems to be miserable outside the firm more then any other character on the show.

-I have really come to like Joan's characters since Season 3. I thought she was just some bitchy bimbo in the first 2 seasons, but they really developed her character well. (No pun intended)

-I'm sure Don/Meghan are probably headed for splits-ville simply because that will make the show more interesting.
