Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Determined to protect his sister, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) makes a decision that will change everything. In the harsh reality of the present situation, Elena (Nina Dobrev) longs for simpler times when her parents, Grayson (guest star Jason MacDonald) and Miranda (guest star Erin Beute), and Aunt Jenna (guest star Sara Canning) were still alive and her biggest concern was her relationship with Matt (Zach Roerig). Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) leave Mystic Falls together on a mission, but soon split up when Elena needs one of them. Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) are forced to make a life-changing decision. Finally, Bonnie (Kat Graham) makes a secret deal that has heartbreaking consequences. John Behring directed the episode with story by Brett Matthews & Elisabeth R. Finch and teleplay by Julie Plec (#322).

Episode 22 of 22

This was already renewed for a 4th season.

Wow - they know how to do season finales, that's for sure.

Ready for things to be mixed up and it looks like that's what will happen next season.

Really interesting stuff with the flashbacks too.

And just when I was about to give them credit for finally getting rid of Klaus. Still a solid episode though. I liked the foreshadowing with the "she would hate me but she would be alive" line from Damon.

I'm surprised they "went there" with Elena. I could have sworn that the showrunner(s) once said that Elena would never become a vampire (although now that think about it, it could have been a True Blood interview saying that about Sookie). I'm not opposed to the idea, really, just surprised. Regardless, I look forward to seeing what they do next season.

I can't imagine they would actually make her a vampire. Now aside from Jeremy, everyone is supernatural. Well, he can see dead people though... The show needs a Xander. And no - Matt is fucking dead weight and should have died.

Was she wearing any jewelry when she died?? It could be something like the rings Jeremy and Alaric wore.

I hope so. Making her a vampire this early on seems silly.

This early on? Aren't we going into the fourth season?
I was really hoping Klaus was gone for good.

But at least we get rid of the actor playing Klaus, hopefully he is gone for good. If Elena remains a vampire (always in doubt because of the frequent magic get-out-jail-card they use for plots), I have to believe the romance with Damon heats up.

The show creator says it happened about 200 pages into the first book the show is based on. I think they are going there - I love the show but it's time to change it up.

Considering Ian Sommerhalder is her real-life boyfriend, it probably will.

Interesting. But given the tendency this show has to hit the reset button on character "deaths". I still think there is a good chance they will figure out a way to keep her human and bring back Alaric.

I think she's a vamp. And I think Alaric is gone. This opens up a whole new world for them to explore. The show is too far past "and now Elena goes to college".

I was ready to give up on the show after this season, but that was a great finale. Loved all of the flashbacks. I thought Klaus was like that carnival leader guy on the final season of Heroes, I just wanted him dead already, although it will be interesting to see how they handle his character in the new season.

Re: The Vampire Diaries -- Season Finale -- "The Departed" -- 5/10/12

Just finished watching this earlier today.

Wow, really solid finale. I'm also shocked that they actually went there with Elena. I knew that Elena wasn't going to drown, but I didn't see the twist coming that the Doctor gave her the Vamp blood.

As mentioned earlier, the flashbacks in this episode with her parents and then meeting Damon for the 1st time were great. It was nice to see Jenna again 1 more time.

Alaric Salzman...He's definitely gone. The actor signed on to a new CW show.

Elena Gilbert (back as a Vamp)

And good riddance to Klaus (hopefully) With this new development, I think they have alot more interesting stories to tell next season.

Re: The Vampire Diaries -- Season Finale -- "The Departed" -- 5/10/12

I'll miss Alaric but i can not wait for the new season. I finally watched this last night. Already knew the Elena twist so I watched for when she was given the vamp blood. I almost expected Damon to have given her some to help her heal but he was hardly around her. Dr fell and her amazing cure was the reason. Wonder if Elena will be mad at her?

I'm glad they went with the book for this. I'm curious how "Elena" and "Katherine" react to each other now.

Or if Elena will be a safer now that she's no longer the doppelganger. She's the end of her line no more petrova doppelgangers are possible.

Re: The Vampire Diaries -- Season Finale -- "The Departed" -- 5/10/12

I've been mulling his over since I watched a few weeks ago and I still find myself with really mixed emotions.

I agree Alaric will be missed. He was such a key driver and mystery early on. Unfortunately they haven't known what to do wih him the entire season.

As for Elana...

On the one hand I recognize the great storylines and growth that can stem from this twist. And I find myself excited for that.

On the other, I'm disappointed and feel it betrays the story. You've essentially turned the central character into an anti-heroine. I feel as though that's going to make the character and plots unrelatable. On top of that you're left with Matt and Jeremy as the only humans left to root for? Bit weak.

At this point it was necessary. She's a vampire in the books. We are going into the 4 season. I'm not sure how much longer the could have kept her human.

As the doppelganger she was constantly in danger of some sort. Now she wont have that problem.

I wonder whose blood Dr Fell used on her. Will she have a sire bond? Could be very interesting if Elena chooses Stephan but finds out the sire bond is with Damon..

I still find Bonnie annoying. She needs to go away to college or something.

Re: The Vampire Diaries -- Season Finale -- "The Departed" -- 5/10/12

The writers need to keep Bonnie around solely for the deus ex machina role she plays with her magic. I do think they've gone to that well one too many times, with magic being able to get the Scooby Gang out of almost any problem. If I was running the show I would strip Bonnie of her powers.
