I didn't think we were supposed to sympathize with the main character. She came across as spoiled and entitled. Also, that wasn't her boyfriend. He's a guy who just uses her for sex, and she's trying to convince him that she's worth more than that.
Despite that, I liked that show, and I will continue watching.

I like the idea of fat broads taking it in the dumper, so they have me at least until that story line is exhausted.
plus gratuitous shots of girls on the potty. makes for a great post GOT guilty pleasure and will tide me over until Shameless returns.

And what does "white" have to do with it. Aren't these all white girls? Are you suggesting we'd enjoy it more if we were, say, Latino? You don't make any sense.

Not quite sure what to think about the show. Didn't love it. Didn't quite hate it. I'll stick around for a few weeks to see how it goes.
I agree with the people saying the way her parents cut her off was wrong. Should have given her a deadline of a month or 2.
I thought the girl trying to negotiate a paycheck out of her unpaid internship was painfully funny.
I laughed when she asked about the book she was writing and the boss responded with, "but you won't be here to read it".

Are there really people like that main character? How depressing.
I'm ambivalent about the show. Not ready to cast it away on one episode.

Overall, I liked the show and will definitely be sticking with it. Actually, I'm not sure I have a choice. I watched it with my regular Sunday night TV buddy, and she loved it. With us caught up on Hell on Wheels, Walking Dead done for the season and True Blood not yet back, we were looking to find another show to watch or start on that night besides Game of Thrones. I guess this is it.

I never lived at home or relied on my parents money from the moment I left for college. Tuition and expenses paid for by grants and loans and I worked for minimum wage for 30 hours a week. I graduated, got a job, and immediately moved and entered into a lease. I just don't understand being 24 and being shocked when your parents tell you the ride is over.

Yeah, my parents were loaded and even I lived with them after college, until I got a real job and saved up enough money until I could move out. I feel that I was entitled; this character isn't entitled, she's a lazy, unmotivated ****.
So you're saying that the point is to laugh at the characters rather than with them?
Well then Dunham is an even shitter writer/director than I had thought, because she gets none of that across. Everything's played way too dramatic to be funny. So therefore, it's just annoying.

You know, a lot of the stuff they do in Modern Family isn't how real people act, but it doesn't get analyzed like this at all. Dear lord, who cares what any of us did after college? It was funny watching that scene and I could imagine that actually happening. That's all I really needed.
I know this isn't the same kind of comedy, but this isn't The Killing or Mad Men either and I don't even see Mad Men threads get so serious about analyzing how people should or should not have done something.

I don't think I've ever seen a pilot picked apart like this one - the fact that it's gotten that type of reaction must say something, I guess. Put me in the camp that found the show a little precious and light on laughs. Still, I suppose unlikeable people's stories have to be told too, and Lena Dunham puting a Betty Davis song on the soundtrack earned her a few points in my book!
