Re: American Idol -- Top 8 Perform -- 4/4 - 4/5

Hollie was terrible, easily the worst.

Still, I think Elise is eliminated tomorrow, although I didn't think she was bad doing Foreigner. It helps that I love that song. It used to be on The Mix Tape, which was a tape I made as a teenager of all 80s ballads that I used to play when romancing a sweet young thing. Add red light bulbs for all the lamps and a bottle of Boone's Farm, and I was a smooth operator. Brings back memories.

Skylar was best, but I liked Phillip as well.

The love fest over everyone is sickening. Tyler's comments are such a waste of time

My favorite moment from what I saw of the show tonight was when Gwen started singing along with Colton on Time After Time. I think she could do really well

I think Hollie's number is up. Easily the worst of the night. Honestly, I didn't think Elise was as bad as the judges made it sound. But, she will probably be in the bottom.

My favorites from tonight were Joshua, Phillip and Colton.

For some reason, I just can't like Skylar. I know Country is her genre, but she sounds the same every week. Even tonight when she sang "Wind beneath my wings" she still has that country twang to her vocals.

Didn't like much of anyone last night. Almost all of the songs sounded better when they were just singing to Gwen. Still Philip's to lose with Skylar joining him at the top. I don't have my finger on the pulse of the nation, are they enjoying Colton?

Hollie isn't cut out for fun songs or being a pop star.

I like Elise and was very happy we didn't have to hear Halleluiah again, but yeah, she might be in trouble.

Sorry guys, but Elise was as bad as the judges said, maybe even worse. And her solo was definitely worse than Hollie's (although not by much). But I liked Hollie's duet much, much more than Elise's.

Based on last night's performances, Elise needs to go.

Why was Colton slurring the words together, it rendered the phrasing almost unintelligible.

Again, it's simply sad to see these youngsters not know these songs (what are they listening to nowadays anyway?).

Elise is the oldest of the contestants, but she would have been only in elementary school when some of these songs were popular. The rest weren't even born yet, so noone should expect them to know or be fans of some of these songs.

Maybe music from the last 10 years or so?

Though I see your point. If you're into music (and people looking to make a career in the music business should certainly be "into it"), you listen to lots of stuff. Even though the 80's was my prime age for getting into music, my friends and I knew the good stuff from the 60's and 70's.

EDIT: Although in thinking about it, I just realized that 80's music is as long ago to a teenager like Jessica as 50's music was to me. Damn ... that makes me feel old

Same here, and I know thousands of songs from the 50s even though I was born much later. Being "too young" to understand music from a certain decade is a bullshit excuse.

Later DeAndre!!

Agreed 100% with Jimmy's comments.

For a second, I was worried that the judges might waste the save on him, but luckily they didn't. Of course, J-Lo wanted to save him.

The judges would probably only use their save on Joshua, Philip or Jessica. Maybe Colton.

Don't they pretty much have to use a save at some point ... otherwise, the show will run a week short in the schedule (thanks to kicking Jermaine off earlier, along with the normal vote-out of Shannon that week).

When they use the save they are supposed to kick off two the following week, to keep the show on track.

Either they will use the save and only eliminate one the following week, or the save will not be used and they will have a charity week - remember "Idol Gives Back"?

I agree 100%, though I still don't understand the love for Joshua. I can't stand his voice. Oh well.

I don't like the save option, but since it's now in play, it should be used only in the rare situation where there appears to be such a shocking error in judgement that one might think that a technical error occurred during the tallying process.

If you are familiar with American Idol enough to go to the auditions, then you know the format of the show, they make the contestants sing old-ass songs. Hello? Do some homework, kids!

And get off my lawn!

Did everyone see what it now says in the end credits about the voting?

Reserve the right to remove so-called "power dialing votes" that are identified as having been cast in such a significant block...that it could unfairly influence the outcome of the voting.
This seems to me to give them reason to manipulate the voting any way they like and then they can just blame power dialing.

That disclaimer has been there (in one form or another) for years, ever since the advent of dialidol.com.

I think it's all software-driven. The system will not count votes when it senses a huge number of votes coming from the same source that are too close together. If AI wants to stay on the air, it's in their best interests to keep the voting via an independent method. Plus it's proven that the "winner" isn't always successful.

They have to use the save before the Final Five. I would guess they'll use it the week before (if they haven't by that time), because the last week its available would seem to be an "automatic save' for the contestant voted out that week, and there'd be no suspense or motivation to vote.

Something tells me they're going to fudge the voting at the Final Five and have one of the majors going just so they can use the save. Drama.

I don't think that DialIdol is considered power dialing.

The first time I ran across power dialing was in Season Eight. Apparently, at least in Arkansas (where Kris Allen was from), AT&T employees would show Allen supporters who to power text:

Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed "Queen of all Media", had the following to say about the texting tutorials, "The phone company even showed guests how to "power text", which allows one to text 10 votes at the touch of a button and violates the show’s rules."
