Once Upon a Time -- "The Stable Boy" -- 4/01/12

By djariya at 2011-11-06
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Episode 18 of 22
Just got caught up with the last 4 episodes last night.
IMO, this storyline with Regina framing Mary Margaret for murder has kind of derailed the show a little.
Also, I just noticed that Meghan Ory (Red/Ruby) is also on the REELZ show True Justice that just premiered on Friday.

It was interesting to learn more about the Queen and why she is the way she is. I think the problem now is that they've humanized her and she maybe won't be seen by the viewing audience as such a purely evil villain now.

Not only was it a young girl she was mad at, but one who had the best of intentions and was tricked by her mom. Not some bratty kid who broke a promise. They made it almost impossible to see why she'd hold such a grudge.

This episode did nothing for me as I've grown to dislike any of the plots directly involving the Queen. The character is a one-note and shrill performance by the actress.

The young girl was Maxine in Wizards of Waverly Place. She's a good little actress. What made the resemblance work was how well she immitated Ginnifer Goodwin's timing, inflection, and facial expressions.
As for this episode, that was a terrible back story for the Evil Queen. I expected her to be transformed a'la Rumplestilskin (and thus explaining that her deranged hatred for Snow White was caused by the corruptive influence of magic). As it stands, Regina is just a pussy that lashed out on a kid who was sweet on her instead of finding some way to kill her own mother (the one who truly screwed things up for her).
I like Lana Parrilla's performance as the Queen but I think the character is terribly written.

Agreed that Regina holding such a strong grudge against a kid was pretty weak, but I still enjoyed the backstory. Maybe it's because I love Lana Parrilla on this show.
Not a big surprise to see Kathryn is still alive. Mr. Gold is probably behind it somehow.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned how much the little girl looked and acted so much like Snow White.

The preview for next week looks good. Some people are theorizing that the writer is
That would be interesting if indeed true.

I'm starting to question how this show can possibly sustain a full second season of new story lines. I mean they can't continue to drag out the Regina cursing Storybrooke forever. That no one has ever left Storybrooke itself is starting to get a little ridiculous too. Is everyone in the town really that clueless/daft to not even think to question that?

It's been hammered to death that the clocks didn't even move 'til Emma rode into town. I don't think it's so much that htey're clueless but rather that the curse stops them from even considering the fact they've never left.
That said, have they ever revealed how/why Regina adopted Henry?

Well she killed the two things she loved the most to get the curse to work. (First her horse and then her father after the horse didn't work.)

I think the point was that Regina took out the anger she had for her mother on Snow. She did the same thing with David(?) at the beginning of the episode when she yelled at him for interupting her and her mother. So it's not just something a little girl did, it's years of hatred she has built up towards her mother directed that little girl.

I still wonder what Gold's agenda is. We know he has one. He knows how to break the cures because he's the one who told the queen/Regina what she did wrong. He told Charming/Snow it would be Emma who would break it.
I'm not sure he wants to go back. He's imprisoned there, here he's free and has a lot of control over others.
There's many ways the writers can play this out. A showdown between the two "bad guys" with Emma having to decide on a side. I think they have enough going on to keep the show interesting for a few more seasons.
