Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Barbara Hershey Guest Stars as Fairytale Land Regina's Mother, Cora

Alan Dale ("Lost") Guest Stars as District Attorney Albert Spencer/King George

Richard Schiff ("The West Wing") Guest Stars as King Leopold

"The Stable Boy" - Emma continues her exhaustive search for evidence that will prove Mary Margaret's innocence in the murder of David's wife, Kathryn. Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was and before evil blackened her soul, Regina must choose between betraying her mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey), and marrying for true love, or betrothing royalty and living a regal - but loveless - life; and the event that caused the Evil Queen to loathe Snow White is revealed, on "Once Upon a Time," SUNDAY, APRIL 1 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Episode 18 of 22

Just got caught up with the last 4 episodes last night.

IMO, this storyline with Regina framing Mary Margaret for murder has kind of derailed the show a little.

Also, I just noticed that Meghan Ory (Red/Ruby) is also on the REELZ show True Justice that just premiered on Friday.

If I were Queen my mother would be banished from the land. And really, all that hate for something a child did?

It was interesting to learn more about the Queen and why she is the way she is. I think the problem now is that they've humanized her and she maybe won't be seen by the viewing audience as such a purely evil villain now.

Pretty lame justification for why the Evil Queen is evil. But I'm astounded at how much that girl looked like Ginnifer Goodwin.

Those were my exact thoughts. At first, until I remembered seeing her in a few other things, I thought they might have used one of Ginnifer's nieces or something.

Not only was it a young girl she was mad at, but one who had the best of intentions and was tricked by her mom. Not some bratty kid who broke a promise. They made it almost impossible to see why she'd hold such a grudge.

I came here to post the same two thoughts. The lame reasoning for the Queen's hatred was a weak development. And that ABC has apparently perfected the cloning process and is now using it on child actors. That girl's resemblance to Ginnifer Goodwin was uncanny. They even have the same facial tics when they smile and move their mouths.

This episode did nothing for me as I've grown to dislike any of the plots directly involving the Queen. The character is a one-note and shrill performance by the actress.

Re: Once Upon a Time -- "The Stable Boy" -- 4/01/12

The young girl was Maxine in Wizards of Waverly Place. She's a good little actress. What made the resemblance work was how well she immitated Ginnifer Goodwin's timing, inflection, and facial expressions.

As for this episode, that was a terrible back story for the Evil Queen. I expected her to be transformed a'la Rumplestilskin (and thus explaining that her deranged hatred for Snow White was caused by the corruptive influence of magic). As it stands, Regina is just a pussy that lashed out on a kid who was sweet on her instead of finding some way to kill her own mother (the one who truly screwed things up for her).

I like Lana Parrilla's performance as the Queen but I think the character is terribly written.

I noticed that right away, the way she talked and moved felt like her as a kid.

Agreed that Regina holding such a strong grudge against a kid was pretty weak, but I still enjoyed the backstory. Maybe it's because I love Lana Parrilla on this show.

Not a big surprise to see Kathryn is still alive. Mr. Gold is probably behind it somehow.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how much the little girl looked and acted so much like Snow White.

So who will turn out to be the TRUE villain? Regina or Mr. Gold?
They've both been given sympathetic backstories.

Good point. I would imagine Gold will end up being a sympathetic "villain". He hasn't discovered Belle's alive. She's his weakness. So far Regina hasn't shown anything that she loves. No weaknesses.

That we know of just yet.

The preview for next week looks good. Some people are theorizing that the writer is
Spoiler:
Rumple's son.
That would be interesting if indeed true.

Re: Once Upon a Time -- "The Stable Boy" -- 4/01/12

I'm starting to question how this show can possibly sustain a full second season of new story lines. I mean they can't continue to drag out the Regina cursing Storybrooke forever. That no one has ever left Storybrooke itself is starting to get a little ridiculous too. Is everyone in the town really that clueless/daft to not even think to question that?

It's been hammered to death that the clocks didn't even move 'til Emma rode into town. I don't think it's so much that htey're clueless but rather that the curse stops them from even considering the fact they've never left.

That said, have they ever revealed how/why Regina adopted Henry?

Now we know where Regina learned that party favorite, the "pull-out-the-heart" trick.

True. Previously, I had assumed it was from the Queen of Hearts, given the Heart Lockers we saw in Wonderland. Unless the QOH is Regina's mother...

I have the same concerns, the current plot structure is already getting a bit worn and I don't see how they can sustain it in an entertaining fashion. The show's only hope is completely flipping the script, like trapping Emma in the Fantasy realm.

Well she killed the two things she loved the most to get the curse to work. (First her horse and then her father after the horse didn't work.)

So maybe to continue the curse, she will try to kill Henry. Cliffhanger!

Re: Once Upon a Time -- "The Stable Boy" -- 4/01/12

I think the point was that Regina took out the anger she had for her mother on Snow. She did the same thing with David(?) at the beginning of the episode when she yelled at him for interupting her and her mother. So it's not just something a little girl did, it's years of hatred she has built up towards her mother directed that little girl.

Re: Once Upon a Time -- "The Stable Boy" -- 4/01/12

I still wonder what Gold's agenda is. We know he has one. He knows how to break the cures because he's the one who told the queen/Regina what she did wrong. He told Charming/Snow it would be Emma who would break it.

I'm not sure he wants to go back. He's imprisoned there, here he's free and has a lot of control over others.

There's many ways the writers can play this out. A showdown between the two "bad guys" with Emma having to decide on a side. I think they have enough going on to keep the show interesting for a few more seasons.

Just watched this last night and it was like they went back in time to bring little Ginnifer to the present to play the part..Amazing. Agree with everyone, they screwed up having that be the reason the queen turned into the ultimate evil mega bitch. edit> I guess if she's just directing her anger towards her mother to Snow, that makes more sense.
