Great episode. I wish the first season was 10-12 episodes, as there are only 2 episodes left!

Everyone was way too busy watching the Walking Dead. Couldn't you tell?

I have to record a re-air on Wednesday. I killed the Sunday record for this because I recorded a documentary on ESPN that doesn't have many airings.

Unrelated to this episode, but filming for season 2 for scenes involving horses has been suspended temporarily. Another horse died during production. 2 died during season 1.

Re: Luck -- "Episode 7" -- 3/11/12

I posted about that in a previous thread.

Couldn't they find a way to avoid killing horses just for a TV show?

Weronika Rosati is a dead ringer for Eva Mendes and maybe she becomes a regular in season 2.

I had a feeling this was gonna happen. But I didn't know if they'd do it considering they did renew it already.

I doubt HBO will do this, but I would like to see the completed season 2 episode as a bonus feature for the "Complete Series" DVD/BD set.

But, since they pulled the plug, HBO probably isn't going to waste any money on editing and post production for the episode.

Re: Luck -- "Episode 7" -- 3/11/12

I wonder if Hoffman will consider doing another cable series after this. I assume he must have some kind of deal with HBO.

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-al...k-cancellation

If you read Alan Sepinwall's write up from today, he says that the season works as a self contained season. Here's a little excerpt:

Spoiler:
The show was in the middle of filming the second episode of season two when the cancellation decision was made. There are no plans at present to show the footage from that or the season two premiere. I've seen the first season finale, which will air on March 25, and it brings the season to a close well enough. "Luck" has, in general, not been a very plot-driven series, but more about the atmosphere and characters lurking around the Santa Anita track. There is no conclusion to the revenge plot involving Dustin Hoffman's character, paroled wiseguy Ace Bernstein, but it at least reaches a natural stopping point, while the arcs for a number of the other characters — particularly the four degenerate gamblers (played by Jason Gedrick, Kevin Dunn, Ritchie Coster and Ian Hart) who have turned into the heart of the series — feel like they've concluded well enough.

An update to the story from Deadline with the good folks at Peta's reaction:

In a statement, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals applauded HBO’s decision to end Luck. ”Knowing that old, unfit, and drugged horses were forced to race for this series, PETA is glad that HBO has finally decided to cancel the show,” PETA said. The organization noted that it had urged the show’s producers “to use stock racing footage instead of endangering horses for entertainment purposes” and said that it “has called on law enforcement to investigate the deaths of the horses used on the set and to bring charges as appropriate.”

Wow. How very bizarre. Never saw this show but was hoping to catch up since it got renewed. Guess I'll pass now.

Wow. Was watching an actual horse race really critical to anyone watching the show? Apparently PETA encouraged Luck to use stock footage, which would have been fine by me (especially if combined with a little CGI). I liked the actors and I liked the show. Some speculate it's more the low ratings than the horse incidents. I have no idea. I do know I'll miss the show.

The wording makes it seem like that HBO has not fully cancelled the show, just "ceasing production"

Re: Luck -- "Episode 7" -- 3/11/12

There's no way they'd cancel True Blood or Game Of Thrones if animals got hurt. They'd fix it.
This sounds like HBO realizing that maybe the renewal was a bit hasty and this is a way out.

That's what I was thinking too. If Luck got 5-6M viewers a week like True Blood, there is no way they would pull the plug. They would probably change the racing sequences with stock footage. With an average of 500K in viewership and PETA up their ass, it probably wasn't worth the headache & money to continue even though it's disapppointing.

I know HBO doesn't really care about ratings and it's more about subscriptions and awards for their shows. I know Treme has about the same ratings, but at least they don't have animal rights groups bugging them.

I do have to say they did a solid job directing the horse racing sequences.

Re: Luck -- "Episode 7" -- 3/11/12

I hated to hear the news. Really loved the characters, although the 'revenge' storyline was the most predictable part. I'd much rather they had just concentrated on the track. Each character (or group, in the case of the Foray boys) had fascinating story arcs going on. Lots to like about this show & I was hooked.

I agree that the low ratings were the reason for cancellation. Don't horses get hurt all of the time at the tracks? I hate it for the animals but had to shake my head at the comments re: horses dying "for the sake of entertainment". Isn't horse racing considered "entertainment"? I know it's a big business and revolves around gambling, but that pretty much describes much of the sports world.

I don't see any difference between horses getting injured/killed during filming of a movie or tv show and the same accidents happening during a racing event...unless the injuries are happening due to prolonged usage, repeated takes, etc. If that is what was happening, the Humane Association wasn't doing a proper job monitoring the shooting.

Wow! I actually stopped watching after the pilot so I could record all episodes to watch back to back over a weekend. Is it worth it now?

Oh, I see from DJ's post that the season can be taken as self contained. That's good.

What the fuck. David Milch can't catch a damn break. I'm so bummed, this was definitely my favorite new show this year.
