I like it a lot. I think they can actually do quite a bit with it to keep it interesting, especially once he starts developing feelings for the tennis coach, and if his wife gets pregnant on the other side. Does not seem to be a LOST type show that will rely on "mythology" although that will always be a small element, but instead a compelling drama between the conflicts he has in each world.

I like how they use reading the Constitution as a test for whether he's dreaming. I've noticed that in my own dreams -- when I have to read something it's just gibberish. Our minds can make up conversations but they can't make up prose. So I fully expected him to try the same test in the other world and of course he never did.

And does anyone else find the lead actor incredibly monotonous and bland? I understand why he would be played this way given his circumstances, but it doesn't exactly make for exciting television.

I'm on the fence with this one and I now see why they waffled about airing it. If "Life on Mars" couldn't survive I doubt that this show, with a very similar yet less interesting premise, will.

Have to agree though it actually reminds me much more of the superior BBC Life on Mars not the American remake. Both pilots are very similar. If they can follow that model I'll be on board as I absolutely loved the British Life on Mars.

A good write up on the ratings last night. 6.2M viewers and 1.9 in the demos. Not great numbers by any means, but the writer made some very good observations on how horrible the ratings are for most of NBC's weekly lineup (except Monday) is and how bad Thursday at 10pm is for launching a new show. It's a difficult show to promote for casual TV viewers and the Thursday night comedies ratings are all low, so it's hard for this show to build off shitty ratings. It did the best it could on such a garbage timeslot.

Some of the comments also mention that maybe some people weren't watching because the Pilot was already released on Itunes/Amazon for free weeks earlier.

Maybe positive buzz will start to build and it'll slowly gain ratings. Seems like that happened for Modern Family a few years ago and Point of Interest this year.

Yeah, I recorded it, but didn't watch it last night. I'll probably watch it again this weekend with my wife.

There's an article in EW about the show. Basically, critics already watched the first 4 episodes. I won't spoiler anything, I don't think there's any spoiler in that article, but if you want to know where they are going with the show and what this critic though, check that article.

I recorded this last night but just couldn't bring myself to watch it. The only reason I recorded it was because of all the positive buzz I've heard about the show, but the concept of it just doesn't really appeal to me at all, at least not for a TV series. I would think it would get old, but I'm going to try to go into it with an open mind.

I thought this was fantastic. The HD looked really good, especially the scene in the rain.

Cool premise and I liked the pilot, but I wonder how long solving two interweaved cases in alternate realities will remain interesting... I can see that getting old after half a season to a full season. As some have pointed out though they can also mess around with his personal life going in two different directions or essentially have two main story arcs going.

I commend NBC for giving this a shot as it clearly is not a show with a "least common denominator" audience target, but it will be interesting to see if they can keep the concept fresh after a while.

The HD quality was definitely fantastic, as good as I have seen from broadcast television this year. It was a strong pilot, though I wonder like others how the writers are going to be able to stretch this concept out over multiple seasons. The setup felt like a movie pitch that got shifted to television. My guess is that both his wife and kid are dead, and this break from reality is the cop's way of dealing with the guilt.

Awake's final Thursday ratings were adjusted up.

2.0 in the 18-49 demographic.

I posted my review in the other thread - suffice to say I loved the Pilot.

Unlike a lot of people here, I don't have an aversion to procedurals (I'm just sick of the endless spinoffs). And this one has a unique twist that should keep it interesting. Person of Interest proved that new life can be breathed into the genre.

It was adjusted up to 2.0, which psychologically seems better. I expect a significant drop next week, though. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm surprised that the Harry Potter fangirls aren't supporting this just for Jason Isaacs. Maybe they are, I dunno, there are probably forums for him where they promote this. Just thinking out loud.

Exactly, I don't understand why alot of people in this forum have such an issue with Procedural dramas. I know alot of them are very predictable and get tedious to watch sometimes, but like you said this show and Person of Interest and to some extent Alcatraz are at least trying to bring something different to the table. I know CBS gets alot of shit from the people in this forum because 90% of their shows are crime procedurals.

And regarding the spinoffs, there is only 1 Law and Order left. Criminal Minds spinoff got canned after last season.

For the record, The only shows with spinoffs left are NCIS and CSI and 2 CSI's (NY and Miami) are in danger of getting cancelled after this season.

But, staying on point with Awake, I hope week 2 will not have a massive drop. I hope it will reasonate with viewers and get some respectable numbers. I like Isaacs, I'm a fan of Howard Gordon and his work from Homeland and 24 and I hope this finds a steady audience.

I was trying to recall which show it reminded me of, and yeah, the British "Life on Mars" is it. Thanks!

I didn't think it sounded that great from what I heard but I loved the pilot. Life on Mars was way better and it couldn't make it so I don't get too excited anymore but I've set my DVR to record the series.

The kid part held my attention more than the wife. She hasn't made any sort of emotional impact for me yet.

The reading the constitution thing made sense but if it was the dream he was reading it in then how would he know that what he was reading was correct? In the "dream" it could have seemed like he was quoting the constitution, that he couldn't possible know from memory, but maybe his mind just made it seem like it was correct. Not really a foolproof theory in my opinion.

Terrific show! My wife and I loved it.

By the way, does anyone know or noticed whether he's living the same day twice -or- missing every other day in each reality?

lordwow 03-04-12 06:12 PM

Re: Awake -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 3/01/12

I don't think it has been explained yet, my guess is that he lives the same day twice, based on the fact that he was at both funerals. One would imagine they would have been on the same day, but just a guess.

Re: Awake -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 3/01/12

I kept expecting him to look at a calendar for an explanation on whether he was living the same day twice or spending his time with the wife and kid every other day. Of course, nothing on that. Gotta keep you guessing I guess.

Awesome idea but what they are going to do with it based on the "this season on.." doesn't seem very interesting. Things bleeding over from each "reality" helping solve cases in the other. I wish they had used the same idea but the guy wasn't a cop so it wouldn't have been yet another police procedural.

Not a bad pilot, but it didn't really blow me away or leave me eager to learn more. I'm going back and forth whether I want to bother recording it. I already have enough shows on my plate ... I'll give it a couple more days and decide.

Loved this show, probably the best new show concept I've seen this year. But I'm worried it is too complicated to attract a big enough following. All that jumping back and forth can get confusing. Sort of like the last season of Lost, but not as obvious. Love that they incorporated the kid from Lost into it too.
