Theme: "Producer's Choice".
I completely forgot that it started tonight, looks like I will be catching the last 15 minutes. Any standouts in the first 10 or 11 singers, that I should catch on Youtube?

Jermaine Jones? Seriously?
Reed - I hate jazz, so he actually made that song worse for me. Plus the performance was just weird. Every time they say his name I think The Thing and Mr. Fantastic had a kid, so at least he gets credit for that.
Adam - A bold choice and he did a good job with it, but I hope this 'black woman in a white man's body' thing doesn't become his gimmick.
Deandre - Aside from his big falsetto notes it just bored me.
Colton - Voice was a bit shaky at the start but overall a fun performance.
Jeremy - Nothing wrong with it I guess.
Aaron - Perfectly forgettable. He wasn't bad, just so middle of the road.
Chase - Maybe the country fans will love him, but the whole thing was kinda generic for me.
Creighton - I really wanted to hate him after his Pee Wee Herman meets Richard Simmons intro video, but his performance was interesting. I actually liked his voice, like a throwback to something I can't put my finger on.
Philip Philips - Hated this with a passion. What the hell was that? Nickelback jazz? His voice isn't the worst, but whatever, f**k him.
Eben - I would have loved to see him on The Voice, just to see the shock when the chairs turned around and the judges discovered he wasn't a 40ish-year-old woman.
Heejun - I'm curious what will happen with him. He struggled a bit tonight, but he has a pretty sizable fanbase. Part of me wonders if his persona is an act, as in he's playing it up like Kellie Pickler did with her 'dumb country girl' schtick.
Joshua - Easily my favorite of the night. I don't remember him from previous shows at all, and I hope the lack of a memorable edit doesn't hurt him because he really impressed me tonight.
Jermaine - He's just too one dimensional for my tastes. I'm already bored of his style after one full performance. A waste to bring him back, in my opinion. David Leathers would have been a much better choice.

My top five of the guys would be:
Colton
Jeremy
Creighton
Philip
Joshua
I can see the judges using their wild cards on:
Deandre
Heejun
Depending on the girls and the votes.

I haven't been watching regularly for a couple of years (and I don't think I saw any of last year's Simon-less season). But circumstances had me catching most of this episode.
So these judges NEVER dislike a performance?!? The singing I heard last night was a mixed bag at best, but the judges gave the impression that we were being treated to the most amazing collection of talent ever. What's the point of judges if they never criticize? That was the thing with Simon ... when someone sucked (and people will inevitably suck) you knew he would let them have it with both barrels when his turn came up. It made sitting through the sucky singing worthwhile.

Watched all 2 hours last night.
Honestly, it was a disappointing night. Most of the guys were mediocre at best. Some flat out stunk.
The only real standout to me was Joshua Ledet. That IMO was a damn good performance.
Adam was good, but I'm also tired of the whole black chick stuck ina white guy analogy.
I absolutely hated Eben's rendition of Adele's song.
I kind of like Deandre, but I didn't like his cover of that Earth, Wind and Fire song. I thought it was a pretty dull performance.
at Heejun's performance. It was basically equivalent to karaoke in a Korean restaurant.
The judges seemed to like/love everything. They only slightly criticized Heejun.
Oh well, onto the girls tonight.

I think there was an article recently in Entertainment Weekly asking Nigel Lythgoe how come the judges are way too nice to the contestants.

Agreed with most of that. I fast forwarded a lot, Joshua was the only one that really seemed to work.
I keep thinking I'm going to like Creighton and Phillip Phillips, but then don't enjoy the show. Maybe Phillip will do well though, as I cringe at his Dave Mathews facial expressions during his performances in much the same way I couldn't stand watching Mccreery sing.

at Colton's video saying he was going to do something shocking.

Yeah, that was so strange. Everyone is used to me sitting behind the piano, I'm going to blow their minds by only doing it for part of the song this time!

I don't watch this show anymore but every here and then I get a glimpse of it. I think his name is Reed. Anyone find his over the top facial expression fucking annoying? It's like watching a retard sing.

^ yeah, that guy needs to tone it down. Less is more and acting like a buffoon isn't going to win you votes. Or will it?
Eben was flatter than a pancake.
phillip² is just a dave matthews imitator, and while he does a good job I'm looking for something original.
Joshua was soooo good.
Creighton is so unusual I have a hard time judging his talent. Had to chuckle when he said he didn't fit in South Dakota so he moved to NYC!

This is shaping up to the a bad season of AI. No black female singers this season? Is that a first in the top 12/13 for girls?

The judges are officially insane. Gushing over Brielle? Thought that rendition of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay was HORRIBLE. I probably hate her more than I should because of her stage mom. Then they gave Haley Day a lukewarm critique, and Randy wants to know what kind of artist she will be? He didnt ask anyone else that.
After the Voice, this just seems like a joke.

Jessica Sanchez - Not picking her because of being from San Diego but she really has the best voice of the bunch. Most of the others were meh.

Heejun's singing sounds like he doesn't understand English, and just learned the lyrics phonetically
Joshua was the best last night.
I forget which girl sang Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay, but it wasn't good. And further proof that these kids don't understand lyrics. This is not a song that should be sung with a big cheesy smile.

Girls night IMO was actually much better than the guys.
The judges were actually a little more critical. It was good that Randy acknowledged they were a little too lenient on Tuesday after watching the show playback.
As far as tonight's performances goes. My favorites were:
Jessica Sanchez (best of the night)
Erika Van Pelt
Shannon Magrane
Jen Hirsh
Hallie Day and Hollie Cavanagh were alright.
I was really disappointed with Baylie Brown. Boring song choice and she found no rhythm with the song at all. I would not be surprised if she was in danger Thursday. She did look nice though, but that's not going to sell records.
Hated Brielle Von Hugel and Haley Johnsen.

It's hard for me to consider a show current and relevant when the contestants are performing Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay (1968). Oldies (especially classics) can be goodies, but it's the exception rather than the rule that these young kids will connect to them enough to make something of them.
The Voice and X Factor win in this regard.

Has there ever been an AI-type show dealing exclusively with singers/songwriters who perform their own songs?
That's the show I want to see.

Re: American Idol -- "Semifinalists: Boys and Girls Perform" -- 2/28-3/1
This is a terribly boring crop of singers. At this point of the season, I usually have everyone's name and face down, but I can't be bothered this year. The funniest line was the girl who said she was going to "rock it" and then sang a fricken' Heart song. At least sing "Barracuda" or something.
The most enthusiasm I can muster is for HeeJun and his personality and Hallie Day for the women.
Thank God for "The Voice". I realize most of those contestants are not amateurs of "AI" levels, but the song choices are more interesting and the judges infinitely more entertaining.
