Good grief. He must have literally weighed a ton because he looks like he weighs half a ton now.

I like it enough to watch it weekly. There has to be an overarching mythology, there is a lot going on.

Bizarre ending with Dr. Beauregard. Agree that this episode wasn't as strong as the premiere episodes, but not entirely bad either.

Yeah, I'm curious to know what was going on with the ending. Neill's character said something like "here's another one for you." Are they the ones bringing these people back? He must know that the doctor is a 63.

Am I the only one that is insulted by the lazy writing:

1) Oh yeah, there was a break in and after an exhaustive search of all of our inventory we noticed that the only 3 things missing were a uniform and 2 children's fishing poles

2) There are only 5 diners in all of San Francisco that sell Chery Pie (no other supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries sell this rare delicacy)

3) Oh yeah, The payroll department of this one concrete manufacturer was very diligent and noticed that there was some back pay owed to an employee so they mailed out a check, when the check was returned because the person was not living at the address on file. They hired an investigator who informed them that the former employee had been convicted of a felony and is currently in Alcatraz. They then mailed it to his attention at the prison. Once the check arived the prison guards and warden wanted to make sure that he had money so they made sure that he got the check and check cashing privlages so he could buy items from the commissary.

-rolleyes-

Agreed.

I'm not going to give up on this show just yet but that was one terribly boring episode. Hurley/Soto is already beginning to annoy.

Not to mention that, so far, we've had police officers shot dead, a sniper out targeting random people in a major tourist city, and an adorable kid being kidnapped - and there's absolutely no media interest at all. When in reality any one of those things would be basically a top story on worldwide 24-hour news stations. On this show, they just give all the cases to one rookie cop working with Comic Book Guy ;) I guess the public and politicians are cool with still assuming that all these criminals are going to strike again at any time.

I thought the last episode was a bit compelling all by itself, though I guess they always censor out the obvious sexual aspect that most of these crimes would have? The pretty lead and the lack of any other current interesting shows on tv has me a bit interested in this, though it's kind of disappointing that I doubt there will ever be any coherent reason for the big mystery.

Well the amber alert was called off - what else do you expect them to do

Sigh. Still deciding whether to give this a few more episodes or use the time to catch up on DVD backlog.

This is one of those shows that has an interesting twist (on paper), but I'm not feeling the execution. Totally agree about the lazy writing/coincidences. The cherry pie comment is right on the mark; I'd imagine most small one-red light towns have five places where you could order it. Also, amazing how Doc just "happens" to be in the right one at the same time as the perp. Never been to SF, but I'd imagine it would take quite a bit of time to get around to even five diners spread out around the city. This really strains disbelief beyond the suspension phase (easier to accept the sci-fi premise than the silly coincidences). Great sleuthing there!

By the way...did it bother anyone else that the Doc has the perp basically cornered in a small booth and doesn't dial 911? I know they're trying to keep the whole scene quiet & all, but a kid's life is on the line & the perp is unsuspecting with his back to the doc...in a public place, no less. Why couldn't Doc just fling his bulk on the guy while he's sitting in the booth. I'd imagine they'd have a hard time prying him off the perv, and the kid could have plenty of time to get free. The doc could have just yelled for the waitress to call the cops while he squashed the guy.

Also, isn't it standard police procedure NOT to give up your gun in a hostage situation? Hasn't our lead lady ever seen The Onion Field? She wasn't going to use the gun while she had the drop on him, but she was ready to shoot at the car after she got loose. You'd think she would have maintained her leverage by keeping her gun until help arrived. In real life, the perp would have shot her & the doc after they were handcuffed. How's that going to help the kid?

Played out with a predictable ending, too. Would like to see a little more creative juice. I drifted off a couple of times.

I'd sort of put this a step below Falling Skies & Terranova, and I didn't think either were great shakes. This had better improve in a hurry.

The sad part is that, aside from the funky filters used for flashbacks, I'm actually enjoying the prison sequences a lot more than the 'present'. Have to wonder if they couldn't have had a more enjoyable series if they had stuck to life in Alcatraz. Then again, Oz has that covered, and Prison Break did the con thing really well.

Im really digging this show, nothing too original, but it's quite well done

I like the mix of flashbacks and present day

Id be happy if they never pursue why the 63s are coming back

Kinda funny reading the contrasting reviews here.

Nothing bad about the bad reviews, good points all around. Just one thing, the show is what it is. Don't expect big changes in the future. You should leave already after these 3 episodes.

Some fans of the TV show "Alcatraz" aren't so bright -- because they're infiltrating guided tours on the real-life island to search for a top secret room ... that only exists on the scripted drama!

I keep saying the same thing - why not just have a show about Alcatraz and then spend the episode showing what they did to get in there. Then mix some BS sci-fi experiment thing in there at the end of each episode (like they are doing now)

My wife was telling me about this today. They showed that in the local news, here in the Bay Area. Of course the TMZ piece is a little exaggerated.

On the fence about this show. Violent criminal of the week can get pretty old.

Why not lay low for a while first?

And now it looks like a child killer gets released in this episode. The first thing he's going to do is find the nearest child to kill? I'll admit that I'm not familiar with the mindset of killers and I know that many killers/rapists that get released do eventually repeat their crimes, but do they repeat their crimes the same day they get released?

agreed it is odd
and wasn't the first guy not even really that bad of a criminal IIRC? He got arrested for robbing a grocery store or something and his kill was someone in the prison shower which makes me think he was defending himself from being raped or otherwise attacked

then he gets out and he's attacking and killing people, at least one of which had no apparent connection to his past

did he first gain weight after Lost?

so, their base is on Alcatraz
What happens when something happens while they're at the base? It can't be a quick boat ride back to the city and a helicopter would raise all sorts of flags

Well, this is a very well done show IMO, but I'm taking it off my season pass. I like the overall mystery, but I'm just not into the freak of the week killing sprees. :(

Was this show delayed at some point?
I am thinking the same thing may have happened with Terra Nova. Too many cooks in the Kitchen.
At one point I think this was going to be more mythology oriented but I think they were afraid of it getting too much like Lost. Plus you have almost all Losties still feeling burned for being duped by the ending in which very little of all the questions offered, were ever answered. I think they are playing it safe for this reason.
