I didn't watch the show. I forgot it debuted last night. I just think your essentially calling people who didn't get it were stupid is silly since a lot of people seemed to have a lot of the horse racing vernacular go over their head.

That was not my intention however I do think that people could figure out 90% of the vernacular if they listened to it in context. No biggie.

I really liked it. Loved the music, especially the use of Sigur Ros.

I saw the preview in December, but decided to record the premiere and watch it again. Fortunately for me, I have a little knowledge of horse racing, but I can see how this might be hard to follow for some.
Surprisingly, I found it alot more entertaining the 2nd time around. I wish there was a little more of Hoffman's character, but I did like the setup. I'm guessing since Ace was in prison for 3 years, his driver conducted all his business for him.
I did turn on the close captioning so I could understand some of the mumbling a little better and it did help alot.
The horse racing sequences were amazing. Good work by Mann.
I am a little confused about the degenerate gamblers and why they held off on collecting their Pick 6 winnings.

I was going to recommend close captioning for people having a hard time following, but I didn't want to deal with the inevitable responses about not wanting to read a movie (which is a standard retort I hear when I suggest people watch foreign films).
Anyway, my exposure to horse racing is limited to attending races 25-30 years ago with a gambling fiend friend (weekly paycheck) and sometimes picking horses for him because he wanted to tap my beginner's luck. Still, I know basic terms like daily double, trifecta. I didn't remember Pick 6, and I had to stare athe board a little bit trying to figure out the numbers followed by the dollar numbers. But it eventually became clear that it was, "If this horse wins and completes your pick 6, you win this amount of money." At least I think that's what it meant. And some horses had equivalent amounts because they had equivalent odds? Anyway, I could mostly understand the dialogue from context, and even what I didn't understand didn't get in the way of following the show.
I'm in. I love "adult" shows. And I don't define that as porn. Just shows that are attractive to an older demo. I can't sit through CW shows, so I thank the stars for shows like this or Damages. This show has much more than just Nolte and Hoffman. The one guy who picked the numbers has been around. I know he was in Murder One (a show I loved) way back when as an ... actor (?) on trial for murder. There were other little nice castings as well.
Dustin Hoffman is pretty much "the nice guy" so it's nice to see him as quite menacing. Ach-ting! Maybe premium cable will give DeNiro something decent to do one day.

I thought it was cute when the doorman says to Dustin Hoffman's character, "Ace, I graduated!" and Hoffman replied, "So did I".

Right. An example of what I didn't quite get when I watched the preview in December, but caught the second time around. As they're all leaving the track, I think one of them says they need to think how best to handle the IRS...

Put this on with my gf last night and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I really wanted more out of this, and I'll still give it a few more episodes, but it felt "small" to me in scope. The gamblers at the track were an annoying bunch, and Hoffman felt severely underused. The preview that showed what's coming up for this season didn't do much to excite me either. I don't know anything about horse racing, and this show didn't make me want to learn. I'm a big fan of Mann's work, but this did nothing for me.

I just watched this today. I also had a hard time understanding what they were saying or WTF was going on. Nothing made any sense to me. I know nothing about horse racing, betting, or gambling though.

Watched the pilot in December. Have to remember to re-sub to HBO on Sunday. Surprised they didn't wait until the week after the SB to premiere this.
