Official Storage Wars Discussion

Does anyone know his background? The bio on A&E says he's a veteran of these auctions, but I just don't buy it. He loses money almost every time and rarely scores, but more than that, the guy just reeks of a Hollywood type. He looks like an agent/power player who made his money and is having a little fun on the side doing these storage bids. So I'm curious.

When I saw this thread, I was afraid you were going to say he was leaving the show and I was going to be very sad. I don't know exactly why, but I just love this show as is.

About his background, this interview with him says:

One of the biggest questions fans have about you, Barry, is what you do for a living. The rumor is that you are or were a Hollywood producer ... true?
(Laughing) No, no, I'm not. Actually, I've been an antique collector my entire life, and I was in the produce business for 20‑25 years, and I retired about four years ago. I just was traveling around the world and enjoying life, really. The way this opportunity came along was a close friend of mine, Thom Beers, who is the creator of the show, was over one night. I don't know, we were having a few drinks. He said he was working on something with these storage lockers, and would I like to be a part of it? And basically that's sort of how things unfolded.

That's weird. When the show first started, they made a big deal about him being new to these auctions. (Of course this is a reality show, so you can never believe what you see).

Barry cracks me up. I think I prefer for his background to just be a mystery.

Another thing that made me wonder was the episode where he found some classic guitars in a locker and took them to show to a "friend," who just happened to be Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. Either they are good actors, or the familiarity was genuine. Hence my suspicion he worked in entertainment.

Jarrod made a good point that Barry blows off the small stuff, which adds up, because all he wants is the big score. You gotta wonder how much money he leaves on the table. A&E has had a marathon going tonight and it was always the same thing: Dave bids, Dave busts, but every episode, he shows up with a bitchin car. He had to get that money from somewhere.

Oh, and Brandy needs to wear more low-cut outfits. That is all.

The Storage Wars spot the History Channel is airing is gag-worthy.

According to this article, he made a small fortune as a produce broker, and amassed a large car collection over the years, so he's not really into the locker auctions as a way of making ends meet, like the other cast regulars are.

Brad Whitford is a big car collector too, which is probably how Barry met him:

You have to realize where each person is coming from. Dave, Jarrod, and Brandy are trying to make a living by finding inventory for their storefronts. Barry is a well connected retired guy who is looking for something to do (money is not an issue; he is looking for collectible stuff). Darrell is basically a scavenger ... he doesn't have a storefront, but still makes a living from this.

My former barber (he retired) was a cross between Darrell and Barry. He was always buying, trading, and selling everything and he knew everybody. One day he had to close early because he had bought four boat engines at a government surplus auction. He had to pick up the boat engines (2 hours away) and take them 3 hours south to trade them to a guy for a motorcycle. Two weeks later he sold the motorcycle and bought a car. The car was traded for a boat within the month. He sold the boat for 10 times what he paid for the engines. Too much for me to keep up with.

Aren't these other people like Jarrod and Darrell also getting paid large sums to be on the show. Is that a sizable amount of money? I would think it would be as the show is a hit. I wonder if they just go to the auctions to entertain now. Perhaps with the exception of Dave.

Man, I could swear I saw him tonight. I live in Orange County, where the show is set, and walked into a Costco tonight in one of the more affluent areas (yes, I'm being vague) when in walks a very tall gentleman (6'3, at least) with the black rimmed glasses and gray hair combed back along with a woman I assumed was his wife. It was shorter than we've seen on TV. I swore it was him but said nothing. I figured he wanted to be left alone to do his shopping. I'll be sure next time the show airs and I can get a good look at the glasses frame.

I've been watching the marathons A&E has been having of Storage Wars now that I have cable again and Brandi has been looking pretty luscious. I was looking her up online and read she used to be a stripper. Can't find any evidence though. ;)

Out of all the Storage Wars buyers that star in the show, the one I would want to have sex with the most is Brandi.

She looks like she's lost a few pounds for sure. The episode with the locker full of four wheelers... :hump:

If it was a one time thing I think the auctioneer's wife would be more fun.

That mugshot doesn't really look like Brandi to me. That doesn't make the running mascara any less awesome.

As much as I love Storage Wars, this Storage Wars Texas show is positively painful. The worst is Moe the Barry wannabe, but seriously, the entire cast of characters are just terrible. What were they thinking? I will be sticking with the original and dumping this one.

I watched one episode of Storage Wars Texas and they mentioned "Texas" about 8 times, one guy brought up The Alamo, and another guy made a "...let's get the flock out of here" joke twice in about 4 minutes.

I have heard the rumors that the show was staged and I never fully bought into it. After watching a few moments of Texas (about all I could take) it was the first thing that popped to mind ... they were like kids who had caught a glimpse into mom and dad's closet just before Christmas. For some reason EVERYTHING was wrapped and you could tell they knew it was going to be something good. The reactions felt faked ... how bad of an actor are you when you can't even play yourself?

The Texas show feels like a bad cartoon, I refuse to believe that it's not a Reno 911 type show. They gotta be making fun of southerners, the stupidity that comes out of their mouths can't be real. I swear that's Eugene Levy playing the Bary Weiss guy.

I'm convinced that they conveniently place that ONE unusual item in the lockers. Every episode is the same: the locker is filled with a bunch of hastily stacked worthless household items (trashbags full of clothes, clothes hangers, old toddler toys, etc.) then they find a cardboard portfolio stuffed carefully in a ratty dresser with original artist prints worth a fortune or ONE rare antique sculpture stuffed in a drawer full of costume jewelry and old papers.

I've lived in Texas almost my entire life. These people are the worst stereotypes of Texans ever. I knew this by watching a preview a few months ago. SWT is not a show I'd ever want to watch.

I don't mind and understand if a little staging is used. It'd be boring if they always came up with just used CDs, DVDs and crap furniture. The worst thing about the Texas version is there's no Brandi type.
