I'll never understand that logic. I won't watch it for because of x reason(for free), but I might buy it later.

This entire mini-series was awful. Heed my warning and skip it, even if you are a hardcore King devotee. As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, the entire thing came off as some Lifetime movie of the week reject, right down to the casting. The first part is horribly paced and most of it could have been cut from the script.

It felt like the first part didn't go anywhere, and then when it got to the second part, storylines were dropped like crazy, characters started interacting with implied backgrounds that were never shown, and everything was a bit of a mess.

But at least it did have a hilarious tree fight.

I just like to have a hard copy of a TV series, escpecially if it's something to do with Stephen King. I'm sort of a King-fanatic, collect all of his books and movie adaptions (Even have the two different versions of "The Golden Years" on DVD)

What two different versions are there?

Ahh, okay. That makes sense.

I have to agree with most here - this was a pretty big letdown. Pretty poor handling of the source material and the casting just didn't fit the characters.

I finally got around to watching this one last night. I really didn't care for it at all. As a two-hour movie, it might have worked. As a 4-hour miniseries, it was just bloated and overlong. It was boring as hell and there was nothing about it that I found scary or even the least bit creepy.

This is one instance where I think a movie ending was bleaker than the book being adapted. Damn that was depressing!

I really think King should let Frank Darabont film his stories from now on. All 4 of his adaptions have been damn near perfect.

Loved the movie but hated the ending.
Spoiler:
Not because it was bleak but because of the way it was presented. Two minutes after his whole family shoots themselves, Thomas Jane gets rescued.

^uh, you should spoiler that.

And yeah, the movie ending is phenomenal(better than King's story) but the time progression should have been made clearer.

Wasn't that the point? That if they'd only waited just a few minutes...

No, regarding the time they were in that situation before the resulting decision was made. It seemed like a hasty choice because a clear timeline wasn't presented.

I always looked at the ending for The Mist as
Spoiler:
They had heard that much noise earlier in the journey and it was that huge monster, so when they heard it again, they decided it was time. Only to have the noise that time turn out to be the army.
So it made sense to me.

Re: Bag of Bones (Stephen King 4hr mini-series) A&E December 11th

I watched all 4 hours tonight. I'll be in the minority here and say that I actually thought it was entertaining.

My only real complaint was the casting of Brosnan as Noonan. I like Brosnan alot, but I thought he was a little too old to play the character. I don't know anything about the book, but to me they should have cast an actor in his 40's. Some of the special effects looked pretty cheap, but what do you expect from a 4 hour TV movie?

I liked the back story on Sara Tidwell and her daughter, which was the primary focus of the whole mystery. If you were expecting a 4 hour horror mini-series, you would have been disappointed. To me it worked as a mystery suspense drama.

I loved Caitilin Carmichael who played Kyra. Solid young actress. She was very believable in the scenes where she needed to show terror.

Being that this was based off a Stephen King book, I wish the ending would have been a little more vague/suspenseful than nice and tidy like a Lifetime TV movie of the week. Overall, if you have the time, it's a decent time killer. I'd give it a B-.

Agree 100% I scratch my head when I see comments in show threads from people saying I'm going to quit watching the show, but if the DVD or BD is cheap enough, I may re-visit it later. Stupidest logic ever to not support/then support a show.

My first thought was to agree (particularly if somebody hated the show or doesn't care for the director enough to even give it a try), but I disagree with the last point.

Watching a show in "real time" requires a commitment & sometimes a choice, especially if there are 3-4 good things on simultaneously...as happens often on Sunday nights) and you don't want to try to record everything. Having On Demand has helped, but some things don't appear in that format.

There have been many shows that don't go in our "can't-miss, highly-anticipate" columns that are still decently entertaining. Due to many hiatuses, pre-emptions, or our having to miss episodes due to other commitments, we've sometimes decided to quit watching some shows and "wait for the DVD". Since we're not Nielson raters (or however viewership is determined these days), it's not like our watching the show later (whether On Demand or on DVD) costs the show its "support" (unlike, say, not buying a CD and waiting to get a used copy later). In fact, buying the DVD may show more support for a show that has been renewed than simple viewership.

Anyway, it seems a bit harsh to say that deciding to revisit a show later on DVD after quitting viewership is the "stupidest logic ever". Sometimes people are just too busy to keep up with everything but still have enough interest to pick it up later as a casual viewer when they run across a cheap copy. I've discovered several good shows that way.

Best examples I can think of are The Shield & Prison Break. We tried them on tv, but the commercial breaks just ruined the flow of the story for both of us. Had we never "re-visited" them on DVD, we would have missed two great shows (at least, the first two seasons of Prison Break were great). Seeing them on DVD was an entirely different experience, and we vastly preferred seeing them that way. Those are exceptions, but we still enjoy a lot of marginal shows much better when we can watch multiple episodes at once or watch the show whenever we're in the mood without having to record it.

I'd say it's similar to folks discovering shows during reruns after having giving up on the show initially. I hated the first two seasons of Seinfeld...stilted, awkward, and unfunny, IMHO...but loved the show from Seasons 3-9. Likewise, Jericho was a loser for us until we picked up the DVD and enjoyed the show immensely after the first half of Season 1. Some shows take a while to get their footing, and a lot of viewers don't have the patience to keep watching in the hopes that it will get better. However, word or mouth or good reviews later may make them re-visit the show.

One other factor is that a lot of viewers have gotten tired of "supporting" a show by watching faithfully only to see it get canceled after a few episodes or ending prematurely with an unresolved cliffhanger. I know that taking a 'wait-and-see' approach to viewing sometimes becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when the show gets canceled due to low ratings, but I blame the networks/studios more than the viewers, who have been burned too many times.

While those were both good, Salem's Lot trumps them.
