Also: Why the HELL did the guy who pointed the gun at Mos Def imply that he killed a man, directly in front of Dexter, who he believed was a cop? Is he really that stupid? Easiest research assignment for Dexter yet!

Did the say that before or after Dexter said he worked for Miami Metro?
I feel bad for Deb basically being used as a pawn by Matthews to screw LaGuerta. My GF and I were wondering during the show WTF Matthews would promote her. There's no way she's ready to be LT, which I think will probably become a big issue this season.

ok, a couple of questions, and feel free to spoilerise the answers if you deem necessary (but I don't think they will be)
1) Is there any reason that Dexter always cuts his victims on the cheek? I know he gets the blood samples, but is there any significance?
2) What happened to Rita's kids?

I noticed that, too, and have no idea when that happened. And next year we have to call him something else. Or not.

Regardless of his name changes, I thought he makes a good addition to the cast. I hope he sticks around for a while.
1) Those are Dexter's trophies. (EDIT: I misread your question. I have no idea why he always does that on the cheek.)
2) They're living with Rita's parents, I think.
Mos Def doesn't want to be called Mos Def anymore
by Sean O'Neal September 7, 2011
After more than two decades of being a living affirmation, Mos Def (born Dante Terrell Smith) has announced that he is retiring his stage name at the end of 2011 and beginning anew under the moniker “Yasiin,” which sounds more like a question. “Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years,” the artist who no longer wants to be called Mos Def—but whom we will still probably call Mos Def—explained to MTV. “It’s a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment.” Those must have been some very positive streets. Anyway, while Mos Def admits that he won’t have a problem with someone ignoring his name change and continuing to refer to him as Mos Def—because honestly, we have enough other stuff to think about—he nevertheless believes that going by “Yasiin” signifies the next stage in his personal growth. “I didn’t want to have to deal with having any moniker or separation between the self that I see and know myself as,” said the guy who has at least three monikers separating his various selves. But now only one of those selves starred in 16 Blocks.

Re: Dexter -- "Once Upon a Time" -- 10/09/11
In regards to Dexter taking the blood sample: He refers to himself as being "Born in Blood" since when he was a child he witnessed his mother being murdered with a chainsaw, and he was found (by Harry) in a pool of blood. It's what fueled his Dark Passenger, and "blood" is his obsession/fetish, hence working as a blood splatter specialist. There isn't any significance of why he makes the cut on the cheek, other than being easy since the rest of their body is usually wrapped up in plastic.

I don't know if Dexter cuts his victims cheeks in the books, but I think for the show it simply allows the viewer to better see Dexter making the cut while at the same time showing the expression on the victims face as it's being done.

Anyone else thinking that Colin Hanks is doing, at least, OK? Or am I the only one?
I haven't seen him in anything before, I watch Mad Men but I don't remember him, maybe that means something about his part/acting. But I think he's doing a fine job in Dexter.

Hanks is really bland, almost a non-entity, though I can see them wanting to go in that direction for the character, in that he's this anonymous, bland face-in-the-crowd.

Hanks was great on The Good Guys on FOX last year. He might be better suited for comedy than drama.

I hope Colin isn't the big bad this season. I don't see how he can compete with the ITK or Trinity. Even Jordan Chase was a decent big bad though it was more of a group big bad with him as the leader.
Regarding the Professor Geller character: (spoiler only contains previous theories)

However, I don't think he's the big bad of this season. I wouldn't be surprised if Dexter tracks him down half way through the season only to find out the whole thing runs deeper. Typically this show doesn't reveal the killer so soon.

Yup, Deftones called it regarding Deb getting promoted.
