Suburgatory -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/28/11

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
In the premiere episode, "Pilot," Tessa (Jane Levy) and George (Jeremy Sisto) have been on their own ever since Tessa's mom pulled a "Kramer vs. Kramer." So far George has done a pretty good job of raising Tessa without a maternal figure in their lives, but suddenly he's feeling a little out of his league, especially after he finds a pack of condoms in her room. So it's goodbye New York City and hello suburbs. At first Tessa is horrified by the big-haired, fake-boobed mothers and their sugar-free, Red Bull-chugging kids. But little by little, she and her dad begin to find a way to survive on the clean streets of the 'burbs. Sure, the neighbors might smother you with love while their kids stare daggers at your back, but underneath all that plastic and caffeine, they're really not half bad. Being in the 'burbs can be hell, but it also may just bring Tessa and George closer than they've ever been.

"Suburgatory" stars Jeremy Sisto ("Law & Order") as George Altman, Jane Levy ("Shameless") as Tessa Altman, Carly Chaikin ("The Last Song") as Dalia Royce, Rex Lee ("Entourage") as Mr. Wolfe, Allie Grant ("Weeds") as Lisa Shay, Alan Tudyk ("V") as Noah Lerner and Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") as Dallas Royce.

Guest starring in "Pilot" are Ana Gasteyer ("Saturday Night Live"), Maestro Harrell as Malik, Arden Myrin as Jocelyn and Ryan Shay as Parker Young.

It has a pretty good cast, I'll give it a shot.

3 hours after the East Coast/Central airing and no comments yet? That's not a good sign.

I thought it was promising. Not the greatest pilot ever, but good enough to keep me watching for another week.

It wasn't that good, but I'll give it another shot next week. Now I don't have to even change the channel from 8pm-10pm.

Re: Suburgatory -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/28/11

Well, I for one enjoyed this much more than some of the new comedies that've recently premiered (Whitney, New Girl and 2 Broke Girls).

The initial premise may be a bit thin, but in tackling a satirical yet affectionate deconstruction of suburban cliches, the pilot displayed a welcome snarky and subversive edge.

Good cast, promising start, and I'm definitely in next week, although, I could do without the ever-present Red Bull product placement.

Definitely the best of the new comedies I've seen (New Girl, Up All Night, Whitney). I found myself laughing quite a bit.

Liked it a lot, Cheryl Hines looked pretty great as the Barbie mom. Like Sisto since SFU, and the girl that plays his daughter is likable enough.

I hated it - especially the snobby condescending attitude that you're no good if you're not from Manhattan. I'm sure it will be a huge hit because ABC hammocked it between their two highest-rated shows.

Curb, Six Feet Under and Weeds, any other pay channels represented?

The girl is great, and I'm a fan of Sisto.

Feels like a funny version of Desperate Housewives.

The passive aggressive books got a laugh from me.

No, it was multi-colored (red, purple...some shit). She looked completely different though. I looked her up on IMDB after the show, because I thought she was really good in this. I was surprised to find out that was the same girl.

For those who haven't checked the the ratings thread:

Looks like this got 9.8M viewers and 3.3 in the demos. It grew from The Middle and performed better on the night than Happy Endings, which had Modern Family as a lead-in.

Solid launch.

Reading everyone's comments has convinced me to look for this one when it gets posted on demand. I hate that I have conflicts at this time.

The wife and I didn't think it was that bad.

I liked the girl who plays the lead.

The wife and I liked it enough to keep watching, but it could really be better served without the voiceover.

I thought it was okay. Way better than some of the other shows so far this season. Definitely keeping it on the DVR for now. I only recognized Cheryl Hines, Alan Tudyk and the girl from Weeds, but I liked them.

Definitely some holes in the premise--they lived in Manhattan and aren't used to seeing middle-aged women done up like Barbie dolls?--but the main girl has a sort of Juno thing going and Jeremy Sisto is pretty solid in anything. Sticking with it for now.

Re: Suburgatory -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/28/11

It wasn't very funny. The surburban stereotypes were downright cartoonish. The main girl is a douche. The dad and Cheryl Hines were the bright spots.

It felt like it was trying to be Weeds without the pot but Weeds handled the suburban cliches much better.

I'll give it another chance since the pilot was just laying down the premise. Hopefully there's more comedy on the way.

I really enjoyed Jane Levy in her role.

WTF happened to Cheryl Hines's face? Too much plastic surgery, or weight-loss.

Only new comedy I didn't delete from the DVR. Loved the snarky girl.

Re: Suburgatory -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/28/11

i actually liked this as well. Cast had a good chemistry - good flow in the jokes.

I thought Sisto was a weird casting choice when i saw the previews, but he pulled it off quite well.

I liked the poor man's emma stone as well.

I know it was a throw-away comment at the beginning, but suburban teens are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY sexually active. It's all they have to do. have sex and maybe smoke pot.
