The X Factor -- New Singing Competition -- The Auditions Thread -- Premieres 9/21/11

By djariya at 2011-09-13
THE X FACTOR is the new competition series that gives viewers the opportunity to help choose the next global superstar or breakout music group. Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger traveled the nation searching for undiscovered talent 12 years old or over, both solo artists and vocal groups, who are worthy of the largest prize in television history: a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. Hosted by Steve Jones, the series premiere of THE X FACTOR will showcase the live auditions from Los Angeles and Seattle which took place in front of audiences of thousands. Don't miss the auditions that will have everyone talking the next day in the "Auditions #1" series premiere episode of THE X FACTOR premiering Wednesday, Sept. 21 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (X-101/102) (TV-PG D,L)

I got really tired of American Idol towards the middle of last season. Barely made it to the end. I hope this really kicks it ass.

Part of me wants to be interested in this show, but I'm just tired of the people who go on these competition shows and moan about how becoming a massive pop star is the ONLY WAY they can better their lives.
That and all the "amazing" performances I've seen during various previews of the show sound incredibly shrieky and obnoxious.

^^ That's how American Idol has always been and even The Voice, which was a big hit in the Spring.
I'm just glad to see Simon Cowell back. He keeps it real and won't sugar coat things and give these people delusions of gradeur. Plus, he knows the Pop music market. You could tell in his last season of Idol that he totally checked out and wanted to get the fuck away from that show. This show is his baby and he has full creative control of it.
I'm looking forward to hearing LA Reid as a judge. I became familiar with him when he wrote and produced songs with Babyface before he became a big shot record executive. He ran 2 big labels (Arista and Def Jam) and also ran La Face records as well.
Paula is Paula and Nicole will be the eye candy.

I went to a taping of this in Dallas and enjoyed it a lot. Simon's candor was refreshing after the lovefest of AI this past year. LA Reid was pretty cool, but seemed as though he was still trying to find his 'voice' as a judge. Paula was flat out hilarious and got the biggest genuine laughs of the night. And Nicole seemed almost mentally retarded in her comments. "Do you have a dog? I like your hat." I was a bit shocked she was picked to judge but when she walked past me and looked smoking hot...I kinda got it.
Anyway, looking forward to this upcoming season and hoping it will be a good replacement for AI.

I read that some of the early auditions will feature Cheryl Cole, some UK pop singer and soccer stars wife, as one of the judges. She was replaced by Nicole after it was reported she didn't fit in.

Still, I will watch this as I thought Jedward was the most entertaining thing to come out of the British version of the XFactor.

Audio was extremely low on Fox Philly.
I Don't like the editing, it is too many quick cuts and too much like America's Got Talent.
Also don't like the hollowness of the sound in the large hall, sounds echoey.

I hope that Siameze wins. You could screen a drive in movie on that guy's forehead. When I first saw his face, I assumed that he was a midget, but alas. I also thought that him pretty much describing himself as god's gift to women, his high heeled sparkly shoes and terrible singing make him a real vote for the worst candidate (Assuming such exists for this show).
Also, can anybody post a gif of LA Reid doing the head wag thing during the methhead guy's performance at the end of the show. That was really funny to me for some reason... I think it was the look on his face.

The judging on last year's post-Simon idol was worthless. I liked Cheryl more than Nicole, but that hand tattoo was distracting.
I'm tired of auditions (good and bad) so I'm probably done until the competition begins. I found that was helpful last year on Idol b/c I had no preconceived impressions on any of the top 13.

Even though the editing was a very clunky and that cloudy confessional room was awful, I thought these 2 hours were a million times better than listening to Randy, J-Lo and Steven Tyler last season.
So good to have Simon back and his frankness.
I'm a little mixed on what happened with Cheryl Cole and Nicole Scherzinger. It sucks that Simon and FOX didn't think she worked as a judge and dumped her after the LA auditions, but then again I don't think she really made much impact as a judge yet.
Plus, I'm blinded by my lust for Nicole Scherzinger. She is fucking hot as hell!!
Out of all the auditions so far, I thought Stacy Francis, the 42 year old mother, was the best. Actually she was fricking amazing. Her balling and having the eye liner run on her face was a bit much, but she's got a damn good voice.
I didn't like the 21 year old girl from LA who sang the Pussycat Dolls song that Simon, Cheryl and Paula. I agreed with L.A.
Best part of the night was when "Gio" in Seattle exposed himself on stage and mortified Nicole and Paula. That was awesome.
Hottest scene was seeing Nicole and Paula dance together when Marcus sang that Stevie Wonder song. Damn....
I know people like to see shitty auditions and laugh that asses off, but I was glad they didn't dwell on them here. The show moved pretty fast.

I was at one of the Seattle tapings. Only two from my taping made it into tonight's package. It was the group of Accapella girls and the mother daughter team. They both did very poorly and were just a small clip in the package.
With that said, there was this one insanely good group of 20-year old guys who did Katy Perry's Firework and a Babyface (?) song that LA Reid penned. Everyone was really high on them, so I'm very shocked they received absolutely no coverage. I know they filmed for four or six blocks of time, so stuff did need to be cut, surprised it was them

I thought the way they edited Marcus was ridiculous. The whole 10 minutes later thing made it look like he collapsed on stage.

Yeah, that was really stupid. When they did the foresahdow, I snarked "What are they trying to do, Tarantino it?" So when it was revealed that (GASP!) he hadn't collapsed, it did absolutely nothing for me.

Yeah I cant stand the auditions anymore... Ill keep up with it until they get into the real competition stage. And Sherzinger gets hotter everytime I see her.

ratings are leaking out and X-Factor is looking like it will get solid but not spectacular (i.e. American Idol type) ratings. It may even lose the demos to Modern family. I thought it was a mistake to focus on the judges and not the singers and even the singers that they showed were very mediocre.
ETA: I agree Howiefan. Anyone who saw how wooden and bland Nicole was on the Sing off the past two editions should have known she is not interesting or knowledgeable enough to judge a singing competition. WTH was that annoying baby talk.

I thought Cheryl Cole was better as a judge than Nicole. It's a shame they didn't give her more time to establish herself.

Am I the only one who thought this show was completely cheesy as hell? And the Bobby Brown/Usher was a good dancer but not THAT great a singer, and the rehabbed rapper that they hailed as the second coming? Marginally talented at best. And the guy who exposed himself on stage? If that was real, would he not be arrested for indecent exposure? Were there kids in the audience?

I know I'm going to stick with this, but the 2 hours started to feel really long to me. None of the singers really wowed me. I have mixed feelings about how they're doing the auditions. In a way, I like how the singers are instantly being tested in front of a real audience. On the other hand, many of these people are pretty green, and it shows, which makes these initial appearances a bit lackluster. I don't know how I really feel about the show other than it's messing with my DVR scheduling.

I actually thought the rehabbed singer was pretty decent for an amateur. But, I am a fan of that kind of music. He had some good beats and rhymes in his song. But, really barely 2 months out of rehab and he wants to enter a nationally television singing competition? I smell a relapse coming soon.
