"Batman Beyond"
I searched and found 20 pages of results, but only two threads actually about this series--and both of those were specifically about Return of the Joker.
I initially passed on this show, largely because the idea of a teen Batman held no appeal for me and I was bothered that Batman: The Animated Series was giving way to make room for this. I did pick up the initial DVD release with the premiere episodes presented in one cut. Thought it was alright, but not enough to make me want to see more. I turned up Season One on DVD recently and finished off that set late last night. I should have given the show a chance in 1998. The stuff with Terry McGinnis in his world (family, friends, school) doesn't do much for me, but I love Old Man Bruce Wayne, and seeing his world through Terry's eyes. The stuff with Commissioner Barbara Gordon works very well, especially in "A Touch of Curare." Also, I thought Derek Powers was a great addition to the mythology. Original? No. There had already been Lex Luthor in this kind of role, and various others. But we've rarely seen Bruce Wayne have to contend with this kind of guy on a regular basis. At the time, there was his psuedo-working relationship with Luthor in Kingdom Come, but nothing ongoing like Powers was in the first season of Batman Beyond. I suspect it'll be a while before I ever get around to the other two seasons, but I did notice that DC Comics has resurrected this series in comic book form recently. I haven't bought any of it yet, but for those who may have a passing interest I thought I'd mention it. |
Re: "Batman Beyond"
Don't forget to watch the JLU episode that ties up the series. I can't remember which season disc it was but it was a really good ending to the entire series.

Re: "Batman Beyond"
I still remember the pilot where the new joker gang is harrasing Mcginnis and Bruce comes out and the gang yells "we are the jokers" and Bruce smiles that evil smile of his saying "sure, you are".

I loved that show. Even more that dc saw fit to give fans conclusion to the show through jlu.

Re: "Batman Beyond"
I only saw it on DVD, long after it had aired. The futuristic setting had put me off from watching it while it ran, but positive word-of-mouth forced me to give it a chance. A good show because it incorporates Batman's history without altering too much for television. The Blu-ray for BB:Return Of The Joker looks and sounds great for what is basically an older direct-to-video feature.

Re: "Batman Beyond"
This show really is awesome. It was a really strange premise but Bruce Timm works magic with cartoons. I HIGHLY recommend going through the entire Bruce Timm DC saga starting with Batman TAS, Superman, Batman Beyond then the Justice Leagues. Awesome series that really shout out and even entertwine with each other. "Epilogue" is truly an sSpectacular ending to the series. Albiet a bit late and in a different series.
At the time this came out spiderman 3000 also premiered. What a difference. That showed threw everything out the door. This one really did A LOT for the batman mythos. A very significant show. I really like how they fill in some gaps and leave others for the imagination. I especially like what caused Bruce to hang up the cowl. |
