The arrangements of who was going and who was staying were made before Bran's fall.

Pretty much the entire family would have gone if Bran hadn't been hurt. Someone had to stay though, there "has to be a Stark in Winterfell." Robb would have stayed no matter what. That was actually a quote from the episode. Almost everything being questioned(not all) is indicated in the episodes, they are usually just quick comments to let you know so easy to miss. They made it clear they weren't at Winterfell during the whole Joff/Arya/Lady incident. They were shown as having left for one, then they said they were at an inn(the structure). Very far south of Winterfell.

So..Robb had to stay, he's the eldest and would rule Winterfell in his father's stead. Bran obviously wasn't going anywhere. Cat, I think she was going to stay whether Bran had been hurt or not, someone has to rule, and Robb wasn't ready alone. Rickon is too young to be away from his mother. Sansa was made clear, arranged marriage. Arya- to be at court..to learn to be a lady and what not. Also I'm sure it would be easier to set up a politically arranged marriage being at court in King's Landing as opposed to the isolation of Winterfell. Just more reasons for her to go than stay. Staying would have provided no benefit. That's one thing I don't think they did address in the episodes.

I didn't get the impression Ned's wife had any power or authority in his absence.

And Jon was leaving to be in the Nights Watch or whatever it was called, not to go to the King's home.

This was alluded to in the scene in Bran's bedroom after everyone leaves. Maester Luwin asks Cat to go over numbers, for names of people to appoint to jobs to fill the holes of those who left with Ned, etc, but she's so grief stricken over Bran that she freaks out over it. Robb walks in and offers to do the appointments.

Jon left with everyone else (they showed a huge line of people walking with horses, Robert's banners, etc), then clearly split off the road towards the wall with Benjen and Tyrion shortly after the goodbye scene.

I assume that the Queen/Lady/Dutchess has full power of their realm/territory when their man is away.

Yes Jon is going to the Night's Watch to serve for life on the wall that protects all the seven kingdoms from the scary stuff north of the wall. Most of the brothers of the Night's Watch were former criminals given the choice of prison/punichment or the wall. The other 2 new "recruits" with him were rapist.

I have to admit to never reading or really knowing about any of the books to this, but this show has me hooked, I really like it and I'm not too much into fantasy stuff.

True, but he did leave with Ned/Kings staff, before departing with Benjen.

And Cat, while a woman, is still the lady of the north, and normally, the queen/lady of the lands helps the heir rule until he is ready.

I'm really, really enjoying this show, and I thought this episode was better than the pilot, which was also good. I haven't read the books, but I'm already intrigued by most all of the main characters introduced (and thanks to those in these threads helping clear up all the relationships) and can't wait to see where this goes. The show does a great job of immersing you in the world. The production quality is really outstanding all around.

Arya is my favorite character so far. They chose a great actress. Loved the shot of her staring down Joffrey and the Queen with a furled brow after Lady was sentenced to die. Seems like she will have a real passion for justice when the character gets older.

Probably going to start reading the books now. I don't think I can wait all these years to see how the story plays out.

Also, what happened to Snow's albino wolf he got in the first episode? Was that just a throwaway scene to establish he isn't a 'true' Stark sibling?

No, he still has it.

Oh, okay. Was it with him on the way to the Wall, or did he leave it at Winterfell? I didn't notice.

They briefly show him during the scene with Tyrion at camp on the way to the Wall. Here's a promo shot of Jon with his wolf:

This should give you a good idea of how big the wolves are going to get, and how they're not even remotely close to full size as shown so far.

That's new for the tv series, however, Cersei does talk about aborting a child that she conceived with Robert (with tansy tea) in the books. My guess is that they used that new scene to have Cersei mention that the child with Robert had black hair so the incest kids are more obvious later, and to make Cersei more sympathetic.

To teach her courtly manners in the Capital, as she is a Daughter of one of the 4 major houses and will eventually marry, if not a prince, a member of another major house or the future inheritor of one of the minor houses.

Sorry, I was rephrasing the one question alot of people had, in a manner that might make it not so foggy. I forget with so much happening some of the finer details are barely scratch the surface and alot can be overlooked. Like the fact that Arya is a tomboy, they barely showed her having issues in her sowing class, show her shoot a bow, a shot of her wearing a helm when the kind arrives and then sparring with the butcher's boy. Not as clearly laid out that she is not a proper lady like Sansa.

7 major houses.

Was it said why he chose that life? He can never return?

Because he viewed it as a noble calling and he didn't have many options since he was a bastard.

The show left out a lot of the nastiness that Catelyn exhibited towards Jon, I'm guessing to make her look good when compared to Cersei (The Queen).

The way it went down in the book......

Spoiler:
In the scene where Ned and Cat are deciding which kids will go with him and which will stay with her Cat insists that Jon cannot stay as a form of punishment for Ned insisting that Bran goes south. Ned wants Bran to go south because he gets along well with Prince Tommen and Ned hopes those two will someday help mend the obvious hatred Robb and Joff have for each other.

Jon can't go south with Ned because there is no place for a bastard in the kings court.

That leaves the Nightswatch. Even a bastard can rise high in the Nightswatch

Cool! Yeah, at first glance I just thought the dog was closer to the camera in the picture, but then I saw they have him positioned right next to the throne. Things are like horses!

I think the show is doing a good job with this sort of thing. There was really only one scene between these two characters, but the way it played out really conveyed a history of animosity between these two. And when the other brother brought it up to Snow later it corroborates your impression and gives you a sense of their history.

he'll start working on it after he finishes a bag of chips and watches football.

ps. i heard he's goign to write the final book in 'choose your own adventure' style with each possible path being 1400 pages, even the ones that are basically "you die".

Spoiler:
Seen a few people mentioning this as making Cersei seem more sympathetic. I see it as the opposite, as showing her to be even more evil. That she'd go there and say all that crap to Cat's face knowing she had a part in maiming Bran..and she could have made up the story as far as being grief stricken over it.
