Imho, seasons 3-4 are the golden years of the show. It's all downhill from here ;) (though you've got another still-good season in #5)

I have many favorite episodes in seasons 5 and 6. For me the downhill didnīt start until season 7. And I donīt think it was as steep as many others found it.

Easily the peak years of X-Files, though the surrounding seasons all have several top-notch episodes as well. I think the show would have had a longer run at greatness if David Duchovny hadn't been such a whiner and threatening to leave every year before he actually did. It left the writers in a lurch for long-term plans, to take the story in a clear and concrete direction. Instead they had to water down the mythology in case he left.

98 1 "Redux" R. W. Goodwin Chris Carter November 2, 1997 5X02 27.34
99 2 "Redux II" Kim Manners Chris Carter November 9, 1997 5X03 24.84

A good two parter. I doubt Cancer man is really "Dead"

100 3 "Unusual Suspects" Kim Manners Vince Gilligan November 16, 1997 5X01 21.72

 at Mulder being a skeptic. Just felt really out of place especially since we know his Sisters' supposed abduction i always thought Mulder was a believer from the beginning of his career.

101 4 "Detour" Brett Dowler Frank Spotnitz November 23, 1997 5X04 22.88

For a monster of the week episode it was a weak episode.

I love this episode. The Lone Gunmen are always fun, you have Det. Munch from Homicide, and just the idea that Mulder's belief could have been influenced by the toxin is funny (his belief was always there I just think the writers were implying the toxin may have sent that belief through the roof).

102 5 "The Post-Modern Prometheus" Chris Carter Chris Carter November 30, 1997 5X06 18.68

I know it's early in the season but this episode is the best stand alones of season 5. Beautifully shot, great selection of Cher music, Jerry Springer, and Peterman! It helped that i watched this around Halloween late at night with all the lights off. I did read that Roseanne was supposed to play the mother and she would've been perfect for that role.

103 6 "Christmas Carol" Peter Markle Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz December 7, 1997 5X05 20.91

That ending :jawdrop: and i think Gillian Anderson should've won an Emmy for that episode.

104 7 "Emily" Kim Manners Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz December 14, 1997 5X07 20.94

Damn what a brutal ending :(

105 8 "Kitsunegari" Daniel Sackheim Vince Gilligan & Tim Minear January 4, 1998 5X08 19.75

The return of one of my favorite X-Files villains. Great episode.

When "Post-Modern Prometheus" first aired I didn't care for it. Don't ask me why, I can't explain it. On subsequent viewings I've realized how amazing it is. "Christmas Carol" and "Emily"" break my heart every time. I think Anderson won the Emmy for the previous season, not for this one. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Your next viewing batch includes my hands down favorite X-Files episode: "Bad Blood." I hope you enjoy it.

I'm finally coming to the end of my rewatch. It's taken me almost a year or so, but I'm almost there - maybe 15 eps or so and then I'm done with the exception of watching the second movie.

This show for me still holds strong and it was definitely a pleasure rewatching in it in its entirity. Sure the last couple of seasons like everyone says weren't quite the best but that didn't sour it for me.

I'd definitely go for the rewatch if I were you (I saw your post in the Comic Con thread)

I knew there were a few stand alone decent episodes, plus I'm just kinda like that - once I start something, I have to finish it. Although the last 3 seasons have taken longer to get thru than any other that's for sure. I'll finish it off with the 2nd movie

With news of a new season/ reboot I forgot that I never finished up this series.

9 "Schizogeny" Ralph Hemecker Jessica Scott & Mike Wollaeger January 11, 1998 5X09

I don't remember much of this one since I last watched it in 2012

10 "Chinga" Kim Manners Stephen King & Chris Carter February 8, 1998 5X10

Creepy chucky like doll and Mulder's loneliness from being detached from Skully made this a fun episode. I bet Skully thought Mulder was watching Porn

Oh yeah, that's in season 5 when the show brought in a couple of famous writers (Stephen King and William Gibson) for a 2 episode stretch on the show.

Stephen King's episode, Chinga, is decent but I remembering being disappointed by it given the hype at the time, because it didn't seem any better than a typical MOTW episode.

But William Gibson's episode, Kill Switch, was great and (at the time) was one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. (However, given how it featured computer technology circa 1998, I now wonder how well it has aged so maybe I need to watch it again sometime.)

11 "Kill Switch" Rob Bowman William Gibson & Tom Maddox February 15, 1998 5X11

Great opening and episode. Loved seeing the old tech and how far we've come with computers.

12 "Bad Blood" Cliff Bole Vince Gilligan February 22, 1998 5X12

 at the kid from Sandlot. I liked how they switched perspectives on their story. That was cool.

13 "Patient X"double-dagger Kim Manners Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz March 1, 1998 5X13

14 "The Red and the Black"double-dagger Chris Carter Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz March 8, 1998 5X14

Good Double mythology episode and it looks like set up some plot points for the movie.

I just got all seven seasons of Star Trek The Next Generation and just started season two and once I finish off the series I am going to do a rewatch of the X-Files. Hopefully by then the blu-rays will start to trickle out.

Yeah that has some good lines now that I think about it.

"Last meal appears to be Pizza.... With Pepperoni.. and Olives.. that sounds good"

Mulder- "You Have another body to Autopsy."

Skully- "Already?! But I just put money into the magic fingers :("

The month after my father died several years back I immersed myself in X-Files for the Sci-Fi Challenge here and watched the entire run, both movies, and The Lone Gunmen series in the month.

It's funny, for a decade or so I called it my favorite show and figured I'd watch it regularly and often. But I don't know if that binge burned me out, or my life has just changed into a non-TV watching one, but I don't think I've watched anything besides Humbug since then.

I may have mentioned this in another thread, but there is a great podcast called The X-Files Files hosted by the comedian Kumail Nanjiani. He has other comedians come on and discuss two episodes per week. He also has had various cast members and a couple of writers as guests.

He's approaching the end of the third season, but you can download all of the previous episodes through iTunes. Definitely worth a listen if you like the X-Files.

15 "Travelers" William A. Graham John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz March 29, 1998 5X15

So these body snatchers are connected to the ones we've seen in past episodes? It's been awhile but I recall some episodes dealing with a similar villain.

And it was cool to see Burt from Raising Hope in such a serious role

16 "Mind's Eye" Kim Manners Tim Minear April 19, 1998 5X16

Great episode. Mulder had some great chemistry and interactions with the "blind woman".

It's one of my favs too.

BTW, probably my all-time favorite stand-alone episode from back when the TV series aired was...
Spoiler:
... the episode titled "Field Trip" from Season 6.

Back then, I thought that episode was mind-blowing and was, IMO, the most "Philip K. Dick"-like episode of the entire series.

(I need to revisit that episode again to see how well it has held up over the years.)
(NOTE: I only spoiler-tagged this just because that particular episode hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread)

17 "All Souls" Allen Coulter Story by: Billy Brown & Dan Angel
Teleplay by: Frank Spotnitz & John Shiban April 26, 1998 5X17

I liked how they turned the tables around by making Skully the believer and Mulder the skeptic. But It came off unrealistic Mulder would act this way. Five years of multiple supernatural cases and Skully had come to trusting Mulder more and more but when It comes to Skully and her religious supernatural beliefs Mulder just wont even be open to the idea of religious supernatural..

18 "The Pine Bluff Variant" Rob Bowman John Shiban May 3, 1998 5X18

This felt more like an Episode of 24 than an X-Files  Very well paced usually there's a slow scene or two but this episode had every scene was building up towars the climax. The Heist scene was one of the most stressful moments in the season for Mulder.

19 "Folie ā Deux" Kim Manners Vince Gilligan May 10, 1998 5X19

"It's Here!"

A great MOTW episode. Almost every Gilligan written is a hit. For awhile there it seemed Mulder went full on crazy.

20 "The End"double-dagger R. W. Goodwin Chris Carter May 17, 1998 5X20
So this is the second time X-Files gets shut down? Good Mythology episode and build up to the movie. Cancer man is bad ass. I didn't like the addition of Mimi Rogers as a possible love triangle. The X-Files doesn't need a Romance sub plot!

X-Files: Fight The Future

I saw the film when it was first in theaters (my first exposure to the X-Files) back then without knowing much of the series I liked it a lot. But after sitting through five seasons of the show and finally getting back to the movie I'm a little disappointed. It's still not a bad movie. Just a bit mediocre. I expected a much bigger budget. Maybe they spent most of it blowing up that building?

I was expecting the movie to be more focused on Mulder's sister but all we get is a one scene explanation. I was waiting for some sort of contact with her.

How did you guys feel when you first saw the movie?

Well, the first time I saw X-Files: Fight The Future was on the big screen when it was released in the Summer of 1998. And The X-Files was one of my favorite shows at the time, so finally seeing it on the big screen... I thought it was awesome! It was one of my favorite movies of the year at the time.

However... looking back now, I can see that the movie is basically just a glorified 2-parter episode that directly connects Season 5 to Season 6. So I now think that maybe it should've been a solid standalone story that newcomers could watch without knowing anything at all about the tv series. (Something like Humbug which was my introduction to the show.)

Re: My X-files journey

I enjoyed Fight the Future. The only thing that pissed me off was
Spoiler:
that Skully was out of it and missed seeing the ship rise up out of the ice at the end.
Excellent tie-in to Season 6 though.
