DISH buys Blockbuster for $320 mil

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...7351VA20110406

yeah, so that just happened.

Dish Network Corp won Blockbuster Inc in a bankruptcy auction for $320 million, further broadening its business beyond satellite TV and setting up a possible showdown with Netflix.

Dish, the second-largest U.S. satellite TV company after DirecTV, trumped at least three other bidders, including activist investor Carl Icahn, for the one-time leader in video rentals.

Dish said the deal, which includes more than 1,700 Blockbuster stores, gives it new ways to market its services.

The deal covers "substantially all" of the rental chain's business, and likely gives Dish the rights Blockbuster had to stream movies over the Internet, the Blockbuster brand name and customer lists.

Dish declined to comment beyond its news release.

How do the rental stores benefit Dish? I can't really see Dish gaining anything from the dvd by mail or physical stores blockbuster provides. Everything is moving toward on demand, streaming, etc.

They are mostly buying 'the brand'.

Yeah, I'd bet they'll close all the stores. They'll take the real estate, sell it and try to recoup their money. Then they'll use the branding, online servers and kiosks to build up a biz that challenges Redbox and Netflix.

they won't close the profitable stores. it's one more avenue of retail to try to sell their product.

It seems like company's can't let go of a dead item (see AOL). Since this story started to break my wife and I have wondered "WHY".

I would think Blockbuster stores are leased space (usually in strip malls).

Getting streaming rights could certainly benefit DishNetwork and put them in direct competition with Amazon/Vudu/CinemaNow/Netflix

I've seen very few stand alone stores that might be owned. I'm guessing the online rental business is profitable as is the potential for streaming.
