Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011

http://i51.tinypic.com/o9nyaf.jpg

Looks like the new season starts tonight.

Synopsis for tonight's episode:

First up, Adam and Jamie question whether realistic facial masks could be used to thwart security, as seen in Mission Impossible. The duo get replicas of their own faces created and test it out on friends, fans and even Jamie's dog.

Meanwhile, Kari, Tory and Grant hit the playground to test a myth from the movie Shoot Em Up, in which a baby on a merry-go-round is in danger as shots are fired by movie villains. To disrupt their aim, the hero shoots a round of bullets into the merry-go-round to push it around, hoping the force of the bullets spins the baby out of harm's way. Is this propulsion due to physics, or is it just cinema spin?

Maybe hot pictures of Kari are a myth. That baby weight may still be lingering.

I have not watched this for a couple of years now. This one sounds interesting I will have to check it out.

maybe it was the camera angle, but that guy seemed kind of short for a storm trooper

That was an OK episode. I was impressed that they made the masks without doing a casting of the person being impersonated, but I don't know why they didn't use a custom cast blank for the wearer of the mask. That would allow them to create a higher quality mask and I don't think it would violate the spirit of the myth. To "replicate the results" it would have been cool if they had given the SFX company free reign to make the swap.

For the gun myth, replacing the axle bearing on the merry go round should have been the first move, before moving on to bigger guns or adding the steel plates. The general idea is usually to give the myth the benefit of any uncertainty before moving on, and they couldn't know from the movie what type of bearing was used.

My non-scientific observations say it is not lingering, except in the right places. And her lubing up the merry-go-round pole was definite gif material.

The best shot didn't come from the lubing up, but laying out the barbwire.

The thing is that Mission Impossible didn't only use big, goofy pull-over masks. Rollin Hand started out with applying individual pieces of foam rubber and a bunch of other makeup to his face in order to appear like someone else. In the third movie they had some high tech machine that created the mask.

The biggest problem seemed to be someone with a big head wearing the mask of someone who has a smaller head, which is why I believe they didn't use the fake Adam when they tested Kari and Grant.

The mask myth was pretty cool. I must say I'm shocked...SHOCKED that Shoot 'em Up isn't based in reality.

I think they said he just did the lines.

Speaking of the acting teacher, when Jamie was mimicking Adam's "loose" body language he looked like a circus clown playing drunk.

I think they should have used a crew member with a smaller head, and then use the voice of adam or jamie - that would have thrown people off.

 That whole scene got a pretty big chuckle from me. I couldn't help but wonder if Jamie might of had a few shots of something to help him loosen up a little.

Is that a revisit? Didn't they already do that and ended with Jamie concocting a non-Newtonian fluid for them to run across?

They did a walking on water segment as part of the ninja special, trying different shoe designs and then Jamie's non-newtonian fluid.

Yeah, with another, what, 3-5 year contract I have a feeling we'll be revisting quite a few myths.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011

Turns out it was another "bust a viral video" myth. Frankly I could see the solution to that one coming a mile away.

The bomb proof myth was better. I don't think the "table in the death zone" was really survivable.

"Well, the blast wave didn't kill him. Can't the same for the table leg through his chest cavity."

RoboDad 04-21-11 05:37 PM

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011

To be fair, though, the criteria for the test did not include collateral damage from shrapnel. Only the blast wave itself. And the death disc did not burst, even behind the shattered table. Also, the "table" was pine. A denser wood, as part of a real table, might not have shattered quite as spectacularly.

All I know is, if I'm ever threatened with a C4 explosion, I am NOT going to duck behind an unreinfoced cinder block wall that is only 10 feet away.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011

I didn't really get the point of the bomb proof experiment. They established that, unprotected, 0-10 feet was the death zone and 10-20 feet was the injury zone. Then when doing the testing they put the death test at 10 feet and injury test at 20 feet, right at the far edge of their respective zones. For all we know a piece of rice paper could be the difference between death/injury at the edges of the zones. And if it were, we wouldn't call rice paper "bomb proof".

We said the exact same thing. Every time they said "bomb-proof" we laughed. The testing proved nothing other than everything they tried was more "bomb-proof" () than air.
