Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
Lame episode all around. I didn't quite get the way they were placing the objects either and coming up with "bomb proof."
Called the running on water thing in the first few frames. They should really sift through concepts a little more before tackling them. I felt bad for that poor girl having to wear those contraptions. I thought she would break a leg or impale herself on that sled thing. What a waste of time that was. Well, take that back, it was mildly entertaining but would have been better served as one of many myths on a viral hour. |

To be fair, though, the criteria for the test did not include collateral damage from shrapnel. Only the blast wave itself. And the death disc did not burst, even behind the shattered table. Also, the "table" was pine. A denser wood, as part of a real table, might not have shattered quite as spectacularly.
All I know is, if I'm ever threatened with a C4 explosion, I am NOT going to duck behind an unreinfoced cinder block wall that is only 10 feet away. |

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
Yeah, the running on water thing was one of the more worthless stories they've ever done, kinda like the second revisit of the Archimedes Death Ray they did for the president or the lazy job they did on the projectile bumpers.
My only real disappointment with the bomb proof stuff was that they didn't do the toilet bomb scene from Lethal Weapon II with the adjacent bathtub covered by a blast blanket. |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
The vibe I got from the running on water myth was that it was a simple and cheap myth to test and are saving the budget for something big a few episodes from now.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
New episode tonight, 4/27/11:
"Carbonated Chaos" Can you float on Carbonated Water? Can an Arrow with explosives split a tree in two? |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
WootKids is selling some Mythbusters boardgame and their description of the show is spot-on (at least when it comes to the lame scripted banter and how its gotten worse since the first few seasons):
Tonight, on Mythbusters! The bearded guy in the stupid hat and the bearded guy with the laugh that’s like nails on a chalkboard take a ridiculous “scientific” premise that everyone pretty much already knows the answer to and use it as a flimsy excuse to waste an hour of your time making you watch them build crap and crack jokes that even Buddy Hackett would shoot down. Meanwhile these three people who couldn’t land an acting gig as extras in a Head-On commercial will soak up a bunch of screen time cracking even worse jokes while pretending that the woman isn’t there entirely to lure in lonely nerd viewers. Then they’ll perform even worse jokes, the kind that when people say them to you in person you can only stare at the floor and kick your foot awkwardly. Then they’ll blow something up, or mangle some ballistics gel shaped to resemble a human or a part of a human, because honestly the only even halfway-redeeming quality this show has is blowing things up As for last nite's episode, I thought the Blow your Own Sail was a better segment. Adam and Jaime's seem like filler - what myth were they trying to debunk showcasing the making of Hollywood sound effects?? |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
Could someone explain the physics of the "Blow Your Own Sail" myth? I would have bet everything I have that you couldn't possibly propel a sailboat forward using your own fan. It really flies in the face of what (little) I understand about physics. And their "explanation" didn't really make sense to me.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
The boat myth was kind of interesting, but the other segment was beyond stupid. Of course they're going to goose sound FX to make them sound cool. When Adam was shocked that a silencer silenced things, I knew I could fast forward through the remainder of the segment.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
I was disappointed when it came to relaying the results to the viewer they didn't overcome the fact that on the TV the two sounds weren't that different in terms of loudness. Their sound tech said it went from about 160 to 120db, which is a significant change but still very loud.

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
This week was an odd episode. Jaime and Adam's projects were showy but not very interesting. The build team's was the exact opposite once they finally got to the results.

Yeah, but why would that thrust exceed the thrust that the fan is generating in the opposite direction? If anything I would think that the fan's thrust would be greater since some of the wind generated by it would be lost as air was escaping around the sail.
As for air getting around the sale, that's why the smaller sails did not work, the air from the fan got around the edges and the net flow of air was forward. With a large enough sail it is able to capture all of the air and by the time it reaches the edge of the sail all forward motion is stopped. If the sail is large enough to stop the air from going forward at all, it has cancelled out the force of the fan, so the question becomes: What direction does the air go as it leaves the edge of the sail? If the sail were perfectly flat it would mostly leave parallel to the sail. But the force of the fan makes the sail take a concave shape. With the fan pointed at the center of the bowl the air follows the curve and flows outward and slightly backwards, which imparts some forward thrust on the boat. |

As for the thrust, imagine a U-shaped tube in front of the fan, and imagine it is 100% efficient at capturing and redirecting the air flow backwards. The fan is pushing the air forwards, let's say that produces one newton of thrust backwards on the boat. The tube is stopping that air's forward movement (1 newton) but also reversing it (another newton), so the tube has two newtons of force forward and the net force acting on the boat is 1 newton in the forward direction.
Regarding the last episode, I was totally stunned about the spinning bullet. Even if they were somehow able to get one to spin, I figured it would too difficult to find. Those results were impressive. Spy-car was pretty lame. I kinda figured the fixed gun wouldn't be that hard to aim |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
when they were talking about the spy car gun and saying they likely wouldn't get any hits I did a face palm
are they completely clueless about fighter planes? especially WW1 and 2 when they just had basic sights? |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
New episode tonight.
Bikes & Bazookas Mid Season Premiere! Is a motorcycle is a greener and cleaner machine than a car, and can a bullet could take out a bazooka? |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
That wasn't a bad ep.
I found it funny that Adam and Jamie were testing a design to reduced the motorcycle's horrible, unhealthy emissions and they didn't bother to vent the exhaust out of the bubble that enclosed the rider. And of course it was obvious that they weren't going to negate the extremely high levels of emissions by merely improving the bikes already high fuel efficiency, but it was interesting to see the results the obtained. The RPGs made for some great video. Of course they kept the myth killing 60-foot safety delay secret until near the end, but it was still fun. I'm curious what would have happened if the bullet had struck the rocket at the 16ft mark when it was unarmed. Would it have destroyed the trigger mechanism so the rocket either didn't go off at all or blew as soon as it was armed? And could a bullet deflect an RPG in flight? |

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
has anyone ever heard someone say they ride a motorcycle because it's better for the environment?
I've heard plenty of people say they ride for the better MPG but I've never heard them say it was due to being "greener" |

Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
What the hell were they doing firing that shit at night? Time to break out the non-explosive myths during the down time.
Since it was bumped, I have to say my favorite myth this season has to be walking in a straight line while blindfolded. Simple one to test with hilarious results. |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
The story says it happened between 4:15 and 4:30, they just didn't get the news footage until night.
I wonder if this will make the show or impact their ability to use the bomb range? Several of the recent shows have been best of/commentary shows and in one they mention getting kicked out of several locations over the years. One of them was due to breaking local resident's windows with explosive tests. Here's the sat view of the bomb range. The "missed the target and bounced" explanation doesn't make much sense considering the residential area is in the opposite direction from where the target should be set up based on the site layout. I hope they didn't set it up in a less safe manner to get a better shot, better lighting, etc. And to comment on the recent shows. The blindfold one was good, particularly the walking results. Last week's was pretty good with the toilet bomb. That episode was odd because usually it's Adam and Jamie doing the tamer, theoretical experiments while the build team does the more practical, over the top stuff. |
Re: Mythbusters -- Season 9 -- 2011
Scary stuff. I have to admit, there's been several episodes that make me wonder if we would ever see a headline, "Mythbuster killed while attempting dangerous stunt". While they always take great precautions, there always seems to be some element of the experiment that they don't foresee.
Glad no one was hurt. I wonder if something like this could put a stop to the show. Insurance for the show has got to be a bit of a problem. |
