Goal is the formal term. Any official basketball rules will refer to it as a "goal." Of course, the informal use of "hoop" is probably more common. Possibly the writer(s) aren't much in the way of sports people and just referenced whatever formal source they were able to find.
I agree that it did seem a little off for Barney to take it. I assumed he would realize that it was a frivolous gesture and relent. I guess they wanted to emphasize how bitter he was, but it would have been more poignant if he had expressed that taking the hoop was only a symbolic gesture and couldn't make up for what he really never had.

With all of the scenario’s surrounding the dads, this season has been pretty heavy IMO. I think they are doing a very good job with the tone.

Yeah, I choked up a bit when Barney said that he wouldn't talk to his dad again and Marshall said, "No Barney, I'll never talk to my dad again"...

<-- still thinks John Larroquette should've been Barney's dad since Barney is the next gen Dan Fielding

I agree the last scene was awkward but for me it seemed like it cut out abruptly. I didn't realize it was already 830 and was waiting for an extra scene, then the credits rolled.
Speaking of the father storylines this year, I was watching the epsiode the other night where Marshall talked about being able to use a lightsaber in a few years to carve a turkey at Thanksgiving. At the end of the episode they show Marshall cutting the turkey with his family at the table except his father wasn't there.
GIven the storyline this season, I just thought it was interesting that back then they might have planned this thing out.
