Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

Anyone still watching?
I just finished the April 10th episode, it's still a little interesting but all the blown out reds make everyone look painfully sunburned, it distracts me to not being able to pay attention to what is happening during the show. I think there are tree left after this ep.

I'm still watching. Every week, I wonder if Steve Ells has officially changed his name from "Steve Ells" to "Steve Ells, Founder of Chipotle."

Still watching too. I'm predicting a landslide win for Soul Daddy. Indian is way too niche and way too similar to...

Spoiler:
...his SE Asian-themed chain.

And a craving for meatballs a couple of times a week during the summer heat? Um, no.

Wings, waffles, salmon, ribs, corn on the cob on the other hand...I'm salivating just thinking about a potential Soul Daddy menu.

^ I'm thinking the same... Good concept, he's shown growth over the course of the show, seems motivated (at least from how they edit things) and seems to have done well with the public.

I thought Harvest Sol might have had the 2nd best shot... but the person behind it is obviously a little scattered and lacking a coherent vision. I think in the hands of someone more competent (if that's a fair criticism?) it might have given Soul Daddy a run. The other two as you mention just have more limited appeal (Indian) and limited repeat business potential (Saucy/Brooklyn Balls)

Yeah, I keep watching her and thinking she doesn't even have a concept.

And yes, Steve Ells Founder of Chipotle is annoying as all hell.

I thought the poor blonde had a really bad sunburn too.

Who does he think he is... Bob Vance?!

Something ethnic yet common, healthy food choices, compelling story -- Soul Daddy is looking really strong at this point.

That has went from annoying to comical to me. I'm assuming it was in his contract that he gets to namedrop Chipotle x number of times per episode. Either that or he's self conscious that he's not a household name like Bobby or Curtis and feels the need to constantly justify to everyone why he's on the show.

I can picture him at restaurants or getting a ticket for speeding using the "don't you know who I am" card.

Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

If I was the founder of Chipotle, I'd be proudly stating it over and over too. I actually think he's had some of the better suggestions.
It will be shocking if Soul Daddy doesn't take it all. That guy is knocking it out of the park. Harvest Sol just doesn't have the wow factor, though I would certainly eat there. Saucy/Brooklyn Balls is driven solely on that guy's chutzpah. He is a personality. The Indian place is simply forgettable (I can't even remember the name of the place, spice something.) in it's current presentation. Now, if they had merged the sincerity of the lawyer and her concept of Harvest Sol with the business and cooking know how of the guy running the Indian place that might have been an interesting combination.

Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

Well there we have it...

Spoiler:
Soul Daddy

...is the winner.

I guess that's better than the other 2 options, though I personally would prefer...

Spoiler:
Brooklyn Meatball Co.

... I can see why it didn't win.

Unfortunately... (Spoilerized in case someone doesn't know yet)

Spoiler:
Bin Laden's assassination

...pre-empted the show where I live. I don't know if I'll even bother to watch the finale since I know who the winner is, and since I didn't really have anything invested into the top 3 anyway.

I thought the finale was pretty boring, I don't think you missed much.

Thanks for the post.

Didn't realize how much I really didn't give a shit about who won (or the show in general) until I missed the finale because of the Osama killing.

But will definitely check out the joint when it opens in Hollywood. (Any idea when I can expect that to happen?)

Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

They opened yesterday or today. They said during the show 10 months later....and then showed the restaurant. I was barely paying attention by that point though, so maybe it's not quite open yet.

Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

Restaurant review from the Minneapolis location:
http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle...121115083.html

Spoiler:
A taste of soul food

Is Minnesota ready for soul food? It seemed to be, judging from the long line Monday when Soul Daddy opened its doors at the Mall of America. The opening was the culmination of the nine-week TV reality show, "America's Next Great Restaurant," or as it's referred to on Twitter, #angr.

Anyone expecting a traditional taste of soul food will be in for a surprise since the premise of this restaurant is soul food with a twist -- a healthier, lighter version -- or as the subtext of the restaurant says, "new home cookin'." There's no mac-and-cheese or fried chicken on this menu. But there are ribs, pulled pork, baked chicken, biscuits and buns, albeit whole wheat ones.

Highlights:

Corn bread waffles. If these were what Jamawn Woods, winner of the reality show, was serving from his home catering business in Detroit, no wonder he had a following. Wouldn't mind those waffles for breakfast, should Soul Daddy want to open earlier.

Cheese grits. Very good, though I speak as someone who doesn't have a long history with grits. Other diners complained vigorously that the grits were too salty. Ash King, general manager, suggest these as the kids' meal version instead of mac-and-cheese.

Pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw: Very good, moist and flavorful, though the whole-wheat bun is no match for the bread Alex Roberts uses at Brasa in Minneapolis and St. Paul for his Caribbean-based dishes that include pulled pork.

Sweet potato salad: Think potato salad, but with the sweet variety. Served cold, with a vinaigrette dressing rather than mayo. The sweetness of the potatoes comes through. Great side dish.

Soul Daddy is located next to Tony Roma's and a few doors down from Famous Dave's. If you're going to compete with ribs, they better be good. Soul Daddy's were tender, spicy and served dry, with sauces to be added by the diner at the table. At $11.95, it's the most expensive item on the menu and the three ribs don't fit the "value" concept that Bobby Flay harped on. Other dishes range from $4.95 for a pulled pork sandwich to $8.95 for the pork, chicken or rib meals.

Despite the fact that much of the staff had had only a few days training, and some only a single day, service was smooth and swift, given the potential for chaos.

Yuck. I have zero interest in soul food, but I'd kill for a place that has good meatball subs!

When I was in college, this food cart nearby had the best meatball sandwiches, and I probably ate them 2-3 times a week, regardless of weather.

We're visiting friends in NYC this weekend, and were planning on trying Brooklyn's Meatballs if he won.

Re: America's Next Great Restaurant

that was the most unexciting finale for a reality cooking show i can remember

if it does come back, i hope bobby flay dumps them other 2 clowns, especially the chipotle founder

i'm so sick of people trying to make fast food healthy, it's real simple don't eat there! and a milkshake has ice cream in it, lol thats all

Yes, those judges weren't very charismatic or likeable, including Flay. The woman looked like a less-ugly Celine Dion, the effete Chipotle dork reminded me strongly of someone but I can't put my finger on it, and the spiked Aussie was as wooden as a log house.

If you've got a Potbelly near you, try their meatball sub.
