HBO: ‘Deadwood’ Not Quite Dead; Milch Cop Drama Update

“Deadwood” fans: It’s not quite over. But, once again, it’s not looking good.

HBO broke its silence on recent reports that the “Deadwood” sets have been dismantled with a statement that gives a slim ray of hope for fans of the acclaimed series, while shedding some new light on showrunner David Milch’s next project.

“There are no current plans to make the movies,” an HBO representative told TelevisionWeek, adding that Milch says the dismantling of the sets makes little difference to the fate of the project. The pair of two-hour movies take place after the town of Deadwood is destroyed by fire and floods, thus the sets are unnecessary.

However: Milch is developing a new drama for HBO set in the New York Police Department (a reunion of sorts for the showrunner, who got his start working on "Hill Street Blues").

HBO gave some fresh detail about the project: The drama is set in the 1970s and involves the Knapp Commission investigations. The Knapp-era gave rise to the story of patrolman Frank Serpico, whose revelations about corruption within the department were made into a popular book and film.

As with the short-lived “John From Cincinnati,” HBO expects Milch to focus on one project at a time. So if the NYPD drama gets a series order, there’s very little chance the “Deadwood” films will be made. Even if the NYPD drama fizzles out, Milch could, as he did after “Cincinnati,” turn his attention to a new project.

So: Very little chance either way, but neither HBO nor Milch will rule out the movies.

David Milch Considering "Deadwood" Revival!

If you've followed "Deadwood" news as close as I have, you'll know that every possible indication we've gotten is that the fan-favorite show is completely dead at this point. Star Ian McShane even said two years ago that the "ship has sailed." Well that was then, and this is now...

In a new interview with me, McShane reveals that he's been speaking with Milch about bringing the series back in some form. "There's unfinished business," he said.

Fingers crossed!

Don't you fucking tease me! This could be the best TV news in a long, long time.

Was anything else said about it that wasn't shown in the interview clip?

He told me stuff off the record that I can't repeat, but I'll just say it sounded promising.

I don't want this to happen. It will render my complete series boxset inaccurate.

DO IT NOW!

They likely wouldn't get Olyphant back as Bullock, as he's the only one with a steady career at this point.

Re: David Milch Considering "Deadwood" Revival!

Paula Malcomson is working quite a bit. She's been in Caprica, Sons of Anarchy, The Event, and even Lie To Me. It seemed for a bit there everytime I turned around, there she was. Still, I think she'd find the time for this if they needed her.

I didn't connect Timothy Olyphant as Wes on Damages. I am Number Four looks like a pretty big movie, but his work is done. I think he'd find time to do Deadwood too.

Re: David Milch Considering "Deadwood" Revival!

I wouldn't count on this happening anytime soon.

David Milch is currently shooting the 1st season of the HBO show "Luck" as McShane said in the OP's post. As of January, they have only shot 2 of 12 episodes. And since it's a horse racing show, it has to be shot around the horse racing season at Santa Anita Track which I read goes through April.

Also, he was just hired to write the movie Heavy Rain, based on the video, which he will work on after Luck completes production.

Doesn't mean he couldn't do a movie of some sort.

He's the main character on a little show called Justified by someone named Elmore Leonard? He's certainly busy. FX was extremely anxious to get them hopping on making S2.

I'm sure it will happen right away, just like the Arrested Development movie.

As long as they have been working on Luck, they only have 2 episodes done?

While I'd love to see Deadwood resurface, I too would love even more to see another installment of Carnivale. Last I checked...Clancy Brown and Nick Stahl should have some availability. Tim DeKay has regular work though (White Collar).

I'm pretty sure they could come up with a convenient way to explain his absence.

Many of these people are steadily working or recognized because of Deadwood. I'm sure many of the people who hired these actors are fans of the series, and hopefully will allow their schedules to be shifted if need be for a TV movie or mini-series.

Hmm. Not sure how I'd feel about that. There were supposed to be SIX seasons sketched out for that show - a trilogy, each installment represented by two seasons. I'd only be on board if HBO promised the other 4 seasons. In for and ounce, in for a pound.
