I've never understood this need to have a character to root for, and in any case, I don't think the show wants the viewer to root for Frank.

I'm really loving the cast here. I never watched the original (other than the first episode) so I cannot compare, but I am loving this show. It's hilarious and has spurts of needed drama.
I did not think Emmy Rossum had it in her but she's great here. I am reminded of Anne Hathaway - she looks like her kid sister.
Also, I never would have thought that Macy would be my least favorite from the cast but everyone else continually trumps him in the acting department here.

With each episode I become more and more pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying this series, it seems like a twisted mixture of "Six Feet Under" and "Gilmore Girls" and I just canot get enough of it.
With that said, tonight's episode was a hoot with them "borrowing" the old lady to pretend to be there aunt so they don't loose their house, but also heartbreaking showing how much the younger daughter really wants/needs an authority figure in her life.
Can't wait for more episodes! Has anyone seen the original UK version? How do the two compare? I've been debatings investing in the DVDs...

I've seen the first couple they match up quite well. but for me UK Frank is less mean I think.
Macy's character seems to just be a complete asshole, but frank uk has some niceness about him.

What's with Fiona believing everything Frank says until it's obvious that he's lying? You figure by now she'd know that everything he says is bullshit right off the hop.

This show is presenting another infuriating romanticizing of the "bad boy" vs. the "good boy", who is also, unbelievably, a virgin. It feeds right into that part of the female brain that really despises the "weak" nice guy who's, non-credibly also a virgin, and feels like it's her job to transform the bad boy into a nice guy, or some convoluted nonsense like that that gets their privates tingling.
Seriously, between the cop and the car thief, how is the car thief more desirable? He's a manipulative dickhead who keeps trying to buy her love, while the cop seems like a genuinely cool dude. Also, the car thief kind of looks like a weasely gay version of Wolverine. In fact, he kind of reminds me of that chef Marcel guy. He should be chasing Ian rather than Fiona.

^ Yeah and Fiona comes from such a nice, loving family. How could she not fall head over heels in love with that nice policeman.
Also it's not that far from the truth

I think she really believes she's not good enough for the policeman because of her upbringing and her family and since all she knows is the bad boy - she sticks with them/him.

Maybe things are just different in Illinois, but would they really shut off the heat during the winter in a home with children. A friend of a friend went through a similar situation a few years back and ended up finding out that they could shut off the heat until the temperature was above a certain degree for so many days.
Of course that was in Iowa, we are pretty nice.

Generally, women are attracted to men who subconsciously remind them of their fathers. If the father's an asshole, they will be attracted to assholes.

I was kind of ho-hum on the first two episodes of this show, but this episode totally raised the bar for me. I'm a sucker for a montage of last minute heart, mixed with a shitty, uplifting power-ballad-y type song.

All things considered, she should go for the cop. That family needs an inside man in the police department.
